GaryP 09-11-2004, 06:27 PM I'm sure I saw Maxwell Smart, secret agent 86, using one of these.... Don C 09-11-2004, 06:37 PM For a while you could get something like that with a Nakamichi tape deck and some Visonic speakers. Not bad for a portable rig. tubino 09-11-2004, 07:31 PM The briefcase unit is cool. Pictured below is a Panasonic stereo single-ended tube receiver with hinged/detaching speakers. It won't run on batteries, but the AC cord winds up on the back. I guess you'd call it mobile, sort of, but not portable... maybe just COMPACT. It will be on ebay soon. BrianB 09-12-2004, 01:39 AM Hi Tubino, You know, if Panasonic were to reintroduce that "compact" single-ended system today - say, as part of a "retro series" - I'd bet that it would SELL! Out of curiosity, how does it sound? Cheers, Brian tubino 09-12-2004, 07:10 AM Brian, Yes, I can imagine seeing some Chinese version of this in a catalog now as a retro item! I just listed to it once, and it sounded good, kind of in the way a Grundig/Telefunken SE wood radio or similar would sound. The little speakers are a bit of a weak link, and if I had it around and had time to play I'd hook it up to a pair of efficient fullrange speakers. That would probably be a cool party trick -- if it were a party of audio geeks. The problem is that it has no AUX inputs to try it with CD. Bummer. |
