View Full Version : Nagaoka MP-110
Balifly 08-12-2009, 04:31 PM The Akai AP-Q70 that I bought a couple of weeks ago needs a cartridge.
There is a sale on the Denon DL-160 and the Dl-110, but I would like to try a different brand for variety.
Has any one tried this cartridge?
Are there any major flaws with this cartridge?
BrocLuno 08-12-2009, 05:39 PM Do you want to try the Nagaoka or the Denon?
Balifly 08-12-2009, 06:11 PM The Nagaoka MP 110 would be something I want to try.
Something completely different from the usual Denon flavour.
hoodie 08-12-2009, 07:42 PM Try the Nagaoka. The MP-110 isn't as dynamic as the Denons but it does faithfully reproduce what is on an album. No flash...just substance.

Yes, do tell???
I love the Nagaoka sound on my MP11 Boron. The standard MP11 has a very nice sound as well. Warm and controled, non-intrusive, easy listening.
The denon DL103 I have on the other hand is a completely differnet animal. LOADS of dynamics and very engaging.
I don't know what the MP110 is like but I listen to more music on my MP11 Boron than any other cartidge I have. (Shure V15 type IV w/SAS, Accuphase AC1, AT440MLa, Grado Black) It's sound is magical to me kind of like Grado's to thoes who love that Grado sound.
Balifly 08-12-2009, 10:58 PM The original thread for the Denon DL-160 sale has been removed.
Having two Denon DL-160s are more than sufficient for me, ready to try the Nagaoka MP110.:music:
AudioSoul 08-13-2009, 01:06 AM Just keep in mind the 110 has a bonded eliptical stylus not a nude one:scratch2:

Can any one elaborate on the " bonded " stylus issue, is it a detriment to sound quality ?

All else being equal, a nude stylus should have lower mass, which could aid in more accurate tracking. I don't believe it's a make-or-break feature. The Shure V15 Type II Improved (about 1970, I think) was the first of the V15's to go nude, but that fact doesn't mean all their previous efforts were dogs. All Grado's styli are bonded up to and including the $350 Platinum model, yet these cartridges manage to please their purchasers.
Of course, all else is seldom equal, and the point at which a manufacturer chooses to use a nude stylus might also be a point where several other improvements are also included, the sum of which making the nude stylus model significantly better.

While I don't have the Boron, I just recently bought the MP-11. I'm going to fully agree with MuthaFunk. Another word that comes to mind is "smooth". I'm running it on my JVC QL-A7 and it definitely sounds nice! No regrets. :music:
Stanton681EEES 08-13-2009, 06:05 PM Yes I just recently picked up an MP11 stylus to use in my MP11Boron as the Borobn stylus at this time wasn't an option, and i can say this. This stylus cartridge combo is a keeper especially when used with higher capacitance cables. I tried it first on my modded SL1800MKII Cardas arm wire and Monster cables and it sounded good but on some things a bit brite. I lowered the VTA and it helped, but the big improvment came when I switched it to my SL1100A with Belden higher capacitance cables. I think my total capacitance on the 1100A is around 350 and boy did it smooth out the high end. These MP11's have a wonderful tubey sounding bass.

This is very interesting. Can you comment on how you found the difference in sound between the old Boron vs the new standard stylus?

Sorry which I could answer your question as I'm curious myself, but unfortunatly the stylus tip was missing when I got the MP11 Boron.
