When I was picking up my lastest round of gear from this estate sale in Dallas, the guy pulls out a dusty old guitar case and when he opend it - VOILA! 1957 Gibson Les Paul Custom in what I think it called sunburst. WOW, what a site, I got to hold it. Sweet!
The guy who owned all this gear was a musician and there are 6 or 8 guitars and bass's laying around. Not to mention Fender amps, JBL pro monitors, mixers, effects, 8-track reel-to-reel, tube crossovers, big rack mount solid state amps....I could go on and on.

Hmmmm......
I am certainly not an authority, but I'm not sure a '57 Les Paul Custom would have been available in sunburst as a factory finish. Customs were usually black or white, but I could be wrong!
My understanding was that the sunburst finish on Les Pauls was introduced on the '58 Standard. Supposedly the sunburst finish was introduced to boost slow sales of the expensive and heavy Les Paul models. Gibson had been doing sunburst finishes on archtop and flattop guitars for a long time, but this was the first time they had used it on a solidbody electric. The sunburst finish was supposed to mimic the look of a well-worn violin. And with the beautiful flame maple tops applied to some of these guitars, the effect was visually stunning. The combination of the original LP body style, PAF humbucker pickups, flame maple tops, and gorgeous sunburst finishes (not to mention the superstars who played them, Jimmy Page highest on the list) make '58-'60 Les Paul Standards just about the most desirable and valuable electric guitar ever. Legit "reissues," copies, and outright forgeries abound.
Whatever the finish, original or good refin, a '57 LP Custom would be a nice guitar to have. It has always interested me that the Customs of that era, although fancier and more expensive to buy new, are usually worth a fraction of the LP Standards. From a player standpoint, I think I would prefer a Custom, if only because they have an ebony fretboard and I am used to that on the guitars I own. Then again, I don't own or play an electric guitar at all, so what do I really know anyway? I'm strictly acoustic, man!
I'd rather have a prewar Martin any day!

I'm not a guitar guy, so odds I've got the date wrong. Still I think it was late 50's. :)

I own a '75 Tobacco Sunburst Gibson Les Paul and I can tell you it has
got one great vibe. It sustains into next week. You could be a mediocre
guitar player but pick this up and suddenly your fingers start to carress the
silky smoothness of the honduran mahogany and mother of pearl and ....;}
There was only one other guitar that I played even close and that was a Paul
Reed Smith "ten" model which goes for $3500.00 (or more). I paid $500.00
for my Paul in '75. My mother helped buy it ( I was fifteen and cutting lawns).
It's part of the family.
