View Full Version : How good are these tubes? Mark Walters 08-20-2009, 08:47 AM Can anyone give me some input on this tube: PHILIPS ECG EL 34 They are advertised as NOS from the Philips ECG factory in Waltham. Steve O 08-20-2009, 12:15 PM Not much info to go on here. Any pics or links????. To the best of my knowledge, a true EL34 was never mfgd in the US. So...if truly of US mfg, it's probably a 6CA7 which is a beam tetrode sub for an EL34. Or, it's a rebranded, foreign mfg EL34 in a Philips ECG box. The 6CA7 has its advantages. There have been so many EL34s produced by so many mfgrs over the years, if it's a foreign EL34, goodness will be difficult to determine w/o more info. Radfordman 08-20-2009, 12:22 PM I thought that a lot of Philips were made by Mullard. The Mullard has a hole in the Spigot. Have these? These are said to be Philips and have the hole: Mark Walters 08-20-2009, 02:23 PM You can't really tell by the pics. Tough to trust some of this stuff being sold on that auction site. jaymanaa 08-20-2009, 04:30 PM If they are truly Phillips ECG, they are very good tubes IMHO. Dynacophil 08-20-2009, 04:35 PM I don't see any on ebay. I bought me 5 PhilipsECG Fatbottle 6CA7 which actually are Sylvania when Philips bought Sylvania... very fine stuff. Mark Walters 08-20-2009, 07:14 PM These are EL34 not the 6CA7. Did Philips make an EL34 ? Is it possible they were manufactured in the far east? Anyone know where the "Waltham Factory " is? Dynacophil 08-21-2009, 04:02 AM yes, shure philips did. Btw 6CA7 / EL34 is just two (US/European) name for one thing. For example those famous brown base DD-Getter el34 called Bugle Boy. But this was long before the PhilipsECG brand existed. Companies acquired by Philips through the years include Amperex, Magnavox, Signetics, Mullard, VLSI, Agilent Healthcare Solutions Group, Marconi Medical Systems, ADAC Labs, ATL Ultrasound, portions of Westinghouse and the consumer electronics operations of Philco and Sylvania. while Philips had for example Sylvania, the Sylvania tuber were packed in PhilipsECG boxes. I GUESS they may have done same with Mullards. But: I can't find a Waltham in Mullard History. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mullard I Guess it's meant Waltham MA, and I guess Sylvania had a Factory there. And there are normal EL34 Sylvania, which have also been sold as PhilipsECG in the time range Philips had Sylvania brand. http://www.jogis-roehrenbude.de/ Sylvania EL 34: Sylvania America was not from beginning a Philips subsidiary companie. Sylvania had its own tube production. Later did the tube production decreased for a fee to the subsidiary of Philips ECG group. Manufactured on the machines and in the former workshops of Sylvania production continued, so the designs are identical. However, these tubes by Philips ECG no longer reached the Qualitystandards as under Sylvania. |
