I'm going to be in Providence for a few days and need to know where to look for records. Thanks in advance for any help.

I believe In Your Ear is still down there. There is one in Boston too I think, but the original was down there. Always worth a trip. There used to be a really cool out of the way, hole in the wall place that had sealed discs into the 90s that were from the 70s and before. I imagine it might be gone but that was wonderful. I can't remember the name, but if maybe someone else will.

The good thing about Providence is that if you are there you are close to every other town in RI! And you can take the train into Boston too. While there, please have a Del's Lemonade for me.

I'm heading for Narragansett this Labor Day and was wondering about the same thing! There is a record store that occasionally puts an ad on Craigslist...but now I can't find it!

I have never been there, but the CL ads look pretty good.

I've seen the ads for time capsule as well, haven't been but would like to at some point. Round Again Records is on Wickenden street in Providence. They don't have a ton of stuff but it's a neat place. They have some vintage/used gear, too.

Plus, the Wickenden Pub is right near by. beer/records/beer... sounds like a happy afternoon to me.

I live in R.I. The Time Capsule is OK, a little far from the city has more comics and games. The best is Round Again Records on Wickenden St. http://www.roundagainrecordsri.com/
He's got a mint copy of Kind of Blue for $75 and other turntable stuff.
When your done go down the street the Fellini's Pizza OMG!! http://fellinipizzeria.com/
In Your Ear is now in Warren R.I. about a 20 min. drive from the city, not bad they have some good stuff.

It was called Zingg Music, but it's the same guy who owned the Thayer St. store.
Not much else around here. Hope this helps

Heck yeah, it helps! Thanks to one and all. I can't wait to get down there and add vinyl to my usual mix of seafood and beer.

I live an hour from Providence and the info posted is useful to me as well. Thanks; I see a brief detour in my future during my next trip to the Cape.

I have to put a plug in for the Pawtucket Red Sox. Along with the Iowa Cubs, the best bargain in baseball. Just up the road and cheap. And they go good with beer, lps and seafood. And Del's or NE lemonade.

Minor league baseball (PawSox in particular) is a huge bargain.

I can't believe I forgot Luke's Record Exchange in Pawtucket!

Go to the basement and spend along time. Musty but you'll find some stuff!
Paw Sox are a great deal. Tixs are cheap and baseball like it should be played.
One of my Favorite eats in Prov. is Bacaro's. Real Italian food reminds me of places in Rome!

Also the RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) Art Museum is amazing, just went through some renovations which I heard are nice.

Also a high end eat is Mill's Tavern went there awhile back really great food, amazing steaks and seafood. Expensive but well worth it.

You may want to check out Sunset Records in Somerset, MA - it's about 15 minutes out of Providence. Not a huge place, but there always seem to be a number of cool records to find, and the selection is surprisingly good. Prices are reasonable too. The guys who run it are always cool to deal with as well.

Also, I'll second the recommendation of In Your Ear (formerly Zingg) in Warren. Big selection, good prices, a smattering of new releases too. Also, they've had a nice looking KLH rig - Model 17 I think, up for sale for a while.

I was Google mapping one of the stores and found this user map. This should prove most useful. Thanks Ben, whoever you are...

It's worth noting that, since that map was made, many of the area's Salvation Army stores closed, in favor of one larger location, in Swansea, MA on Rte. 6. I couldn't say for sure that both S.A. locations on the map are closed, but I'd have to imagine so.

That having been said, the one in Swansea seems just "OK". I've found one or two decent records there, but most seems either beat or lame. Of course, I suppose "lame" is in the eye of the beholder. If you like Lawrence Welk-esque singalongs, disposable pop, and battered showtune records, maybe it's the place for you! :D

(Though I did find a nice copy of Boots Randolph's "The Yakin' Sax Man" and a super clean "Speaking In Tongues" by the Talking Heads, so YMMV)

Sunset is good I've been going there for awhile. The S.A. in Swansea is pretty good too not far from Sunset. I did just go to Time Capsule today, better than I first thought worth the trip. The guy said he's got 50,000 records in storage and replenishes every Friday.

D*mn! My wife and I were up there last week for a little get-away. Wish this thread came about sooner!. Although she would have killed me if I spent time in record stores.
(We did get out on a cruise to Narangassett Bay which was wonderful! It was the Lighthouse tour. Well worth it!)

oh well... next time. Beautiful city indeed!
