Hi,
I was looking for opinions on Marantz tuners 2100 2110 or 2120. The 2130 is a bit out of my league. I've been to the tuner info site but thought I'd get more opinions here.
thanks,
md

They're quite good.
There are better, and better values available.

I've owned a 2110 for over 10 years and I have always been happy with it. It may not have the best specs for DX'ing but it is respectable and I have yet to here a turner with better fidelity.

I've found the scope to much more useful then just a neat display to look at. It comes in handy when making turntable adjustments with a sweep records, the same goes with making head adjustments on tape decks. Also shows wow and flutter and rumble if you now what your looking at.

The 2100 is the bottom of the line and can be got pretty cheap. I've never heard one, but I imagine that it won't stack up to there higher models. 2120's are pretty resonable and have better specs, I would expect it to sound like a 2110 without the scope.

As for the 2130.. we can all dream. Maybe one of these days.

I have a 2120 and it's pretty good tuner, has decent specs. Can get for under $200 usually.

Had most all of the Marantz tuners at one time or another. No matter which one you get, it probably be a good idea to have the tuner section aligned, if your going to keep it a while.

The 150 is the best of the earlier AM/FM tuners.

As you may know, I just got the Esotec ST 8 tuner, which is the same spec as a 2130. Love it !!

Damn Shain,
Stop flashing that pic, it makes want to make an illegal withdrawal from some arbitrary financial institution.
That's the first time I ever heard or saw one of those by the way.

Another question: How about those early XXX marantz tuners? Not much info on them around.
thanks,

Check the classic-audio.com site. ......Go to the Marantz section.

The 2120, et al, were the late 70's tuners.

The mid 70's tuners were the 112, 120, 150, etc, etc. There are two or three with scopes. The 120 and 150's were probably the best.

Real early tube versions were 50's & 1960's. The SS tuners started in late 60's.

The very early 10B is the most well known. (FM tube tuner) Go for around $1,500 +

The Esotec series was very late 70's & and 1980, as near as I can find out.

Millerdog, I hate myself for saying this, but I have a beautiful Marantz 120 o'scope tuner that I should sell soon. It has the walnut cabinet and the original manual and papers.

It's part of a set, with a matching TOTL model 1200, 100 wpc integrated amp, also having walnut/papers. Both were TOTL units in their day.

Does anyone have any philosophical 'pain' about breaking up and selling vintage goodies? I have to fight a powerful temptation to consider every piece I get, especially TOTL units as 'keepers'. Shain must have it even worse--how can anything be better than his Esotecs?

When I got these goodies, almost a year ago, they had been sitting unused since 1983! The only problem was a burned out dial light in the tuner, since replaced. Otherwise it's all-original and low-mileage! Of course they sound and work superbly and are the pride of my collection.

Anyway, don't forget the 120b and 150 tuners also. I've heard they are quite nice.

Hmmmm....You could PM the price of the 120 though I got a feeling it's a bit out of my price range. I have a Fisher integrated so I wouldn't need the amp.
Actually my first instinct was to get a tubed unit to match the Fisher, but I thought I'd try SS first. At least I would have something to compare the tubed unit to.
Opinions?

MD,
Thought you had a 400 too. Great tuner section in it.
Marantz recievers are usually easier and cheaper to find and you don't have to use the amp section as there is a pre out. Tuners are just as good. I have 2 and they both have superior tuners in them.

Thatch,
me thinks the Fisher 400 will do duties upstairs, while the X100C will sit in my room. This is where I plant my uh, derrier most of the time.
I also need AM reception. Football you know.;)
I guess thats why I overlooked the tubed Fishers. If worst comes to worst, I can use my H/K 330a as a reciever, but I would rather have a dedicated one. Besides, those scope thingys look kinda nice, though I actually like the dual meters on the 2120.

Hi

I think, that the 2120 is a very very good tuner soundwise. 2110
is also very nice sounding. In my opinion Marantz tuners never won championships in DX'ing, but they are for the most excellent sounding and built well

Dispite it's sound & buildquality you can get the 2120 pretty cheap
cause it stands in the shadow of the 2130 and 2110 mainly because of the scope features, which are very nice. In fact I have listened to a 2130 with a good antenna and it didn't sound much better than 2120.

All those tuners with the classic Marantz - look are in most peoples opinion very pleasing to the eye.
I have daily listened to Marantz top-of-the-line tuners since 1973 and never got tired of it.

have fun
