View Full Version : Rega P3 suprise
marc mc 09-08-2009, 11:18 AM I love it when this hobby throws you a curve. I had this planer 3 under the stairs with the original RS 200 S shaped arm. I used it in the garage system up to this year when I made a TT and left the Rega system-less.
I made a deal a while back and got this Origin Live RB250 as a part of it. So I decided to put a DL103 that was not in use on it to give me a simple table on my livingroom system. Well cripes! can you say giant killer. This is a synergy combo if there ever was one. I have owned the new P3/RB300 and the P25/RB600 with a couple different carts and this one would spank them.
I do use the cork pads instead of the felt which I also tried on the other Rega's. But this set up is great. :thmbsp:

RickB 09-08-2009, 11:34 AM The DL-103 is a great cartridge, but it's rewiring the arm where all the good stuff begins to happen!
The Origin Live rewires usually use Litz wire in the arm, soldered to the "headshell" leads and soldered to a plug in the bottom of the tonearm that has the low capacitance output OL wiring soldered there...so, the OL job still has four solder joints and three kinds of wiring vs. the Incognito kit's one type of wire and two solder joints...I have re-rewired several arms that had the OL kit in them and that's what I found....now, I do not know if they have changed any as the last one I did was about a year ago and they may have changed...
But, the OL rewire does bring out just how bad the stock wiring was...it wasn't until I heard an Incognito rewired Rega on a Basis 1400 that I finally "got" what the Rega arm was capable of delivering....
marc mc 09-08-2009, 06:43 PM Thanks rick, that actually explains alot. I have owned lots of Rega arms and I could tell somthing was up with this one. I have a modded RB300 on my Heybrook TT2 and a brand new stock RB300 on my VPI. The Alphason arm that I used on my DIY table came with Litz wire from new. And I have always thought it sounded good.
I'm going to get this arm http://www.tonearm.co.uk/silver-tonearm.htm for the VPI. Unless an RB600 falls into my lap. If it does I think a rewired one would be nice. I used one for a couple years and liked it. I have a very good relationship with a Rega dealer.

ripblade 09-08-2009, 08:41 PM Hey marc mc, I think you'll find the DL 103 is a giant killer on any arm.
Cheers,
Glenn
JohnVF 09-08-2009, 08:52 PM I've heard a DL-103 on a stock P-3 and thought it sounded fantastic. I liked it so much that I bought a 103 that same day, and it has become one of my favorite cartridges...especially since I have a couple vintage decks with nice but heavy arms, like my Empire.
That Origin Live silver arm looks beautiful in its simplicity.

Hey Glenn :thmbsp: Nice to see you here.

Brett a 09-08-2009, 08:58 PM I dig the cork pads and might like to try them on my glass platter'd Planar 2.
Did you have the stock felt pad before? did you just use cork pads from the hardware store?

Thanks, marc mc. I'd take the OL silver over the RB 600. OL started with the basic RB design and improved it.
Anyway, dinna matta: For a guy into funky metal carts with weird needle shapes, the 103 blew me away for the simple cone it is...

Yep, their the $1.99 a pack guys. And a flip of the platter to compare with the felt and I like the pads better.

marc mc 09-08-2009, 09:39 PM BTW Glenn, You have no idea how right you were about the Open Baffles. I am really struggling with the indoor stuff after a summer with them and the Watson 10's

Although it supposedly needs a heavy tonearm to be at its best. Now are you going to send in the 103 for modification?:thmbsp:

You're right Mr Lin, but I heard it on a light arm - 5.5gm - and it still sounds impressive. I would prefer more dynamics, but it tracks very well, with a smooth, big open midrange, and a clean well defined bass. On a heavier arm I'm sure it would sound amazing, but even on a light one, it still outperforms it's weight class.
