So do any of you WTLC guys know the difference b/t the 8" forward firing and the 8" bottom firing low/sub driver? They look exactly the same and have the same part numbers stamped on the drivers BUT Infinity stated in their literature that they are different. Could it be the black shiny coating they put on the cone which SEEMS to be a bit heavier on the downward 8"s?
At least I think that they were coated heavier but I believe both my sets had the 8" drivers pulled and could have easily got switched around as they look identical. I got a spare parts set which are missing (2)x 8" drivers as well and I'm trying to sort out which ones I actually have and try and find 2 more to complete my other set.
Anyone, Anyone.... Bueler?

there is very little difference between the coatings on my WTLC woofers. i think they may have made some changes during the production run, at least with the woofers.

I have one pair that looks like the cone "doping" is about the same and have another pair which have less on the forward firing then the downward. Again... they have the same numbers stamped on them but if you read the Advertisements/brochures Infinity put out at the time about the WTLC found here.... http://www.davidsaudio.com/Infinity_WTLC.pdf
It definitely says they are different.
I'm just confused as my 2nd pair sounds thinner/less bass than the 1st pair I purchased untouched which sound FANTASTIC. That 1st pair I marked the drivers as lower and forward prior to re-foaming to make sure they were correctly placed upon restoring.
The 2nd pair that sound thin were refoamed before my ownership so I have no idea whether they were put back in correctly as they look the same.
My 3rd pair are missing 2 8" drivers so I'm just trying to figure this all out and make them right.

BTW this probably deserves it's own thread BUT you, Coastsider, and a few others may be interested in that I have had several dead Walsh tweets repaired. One that needed just a turn taken out of the coil where they usually break just before the posts. Two others had coils that were FRIED but my speaker guy found coils that were similar and were fitted to the original cone/walsh assembly.... so they CAN be repaired. My speaker repair guy did NOT enjoy it though and does not want do do this type of repair again. BUT... it can be done!

Good luck they are FANTASTIC sounding speakers if ALL the drivers are original and functional.... do the Walsh tweets work? What will you drive them with? Everyone from audiophile types to sound engineers to casual listeners who hear my 1st pair (which I know are correct in relation to my ramblings above about the 8" drivers) which are in my main system and on everyday, are absolutely blown away. My 2nd pair which I've been trying to figure out for a while are in the bedroom and still sound really good BUT... less bass, and less overall magic of pair #1. I only know this because I have the luxury of A/B ing both pair. I don't know if it's because the 8" drivers are different as the Literature seems to state and in the wrong place in their boxes, if this 2nd pair which IS a later production serial number had inferior drivers, or if the insulation inside the boxes got moved around effecting the low frequency?????????????????????????????????

3rd pair once I find 2 extra 8" drivers will be complete and in the basement system.
Even my live in girlfriend who puts up with a lot of gear and speakers that come and go here LOOOOOVES the WTLC's sound AND styling. YEAAAAAA.... WAF in effect!

They're coming from the brother of the original owner.

The guy that I've been talking with is a co-worker and claims that he has the original boxes
and manuals.

He also claims that both he and his brother have taken excellent care of them but they will
need all of the surrounds replaced.

The original owner ran them with McIntosh tube mono-blocks, but I'll be running them with a
Kenwood Model 500 for the time being.

Starting to save my pennies for some Atma-sphere mono-block tube amps. :thmbsp:

The two low frequency drivers in the WTLC have different amounts of doping compound applied in order to mechanically cut off the ultimate crossover point at 500Hz. The heavily doped down facing woffer might be designed to cut off mechanically at an even lower point........Facing a driver in a downward fashion probably is a natural way of rolling off the higher frequencies?

Most excellent! I would be concerned if they didn't need surrounds. They do sound great with tubes. These days my tube amps (except for guitar amps) are getting dusty and I've been feeding mine some power with either 170 or 200 wpc Sansui. Be careful in transporting these as that often kills the Walsh tweets. Thin wires from the coils to the posts quite often break and kill them.... then you will be bummin'. Don't even look at them sideways or let a flea pass wind on em' at 500 ft or else they die.

So, for the temporarily impaired.... same driver different amount of doping and positioning is the difference? BTW, thanks for the help!

Well, if everything goes as planned, I'll be bringing my WLTCs home with me tomorrow night!
