View Full Version : Kenwood KA-907 (a big 'un!)
jeffe 09-17-2009, 07:13 PM Recently acquired from Targeteye and put back in service by my friend Frank.
Here it is side by side with my Model 600, hence big 'un!
This is one strong integrated! It had no problem pushing Franks big 4 ohm Dali's. And yes... it sounded very nice doing so! It's home debut is coming up later :D
meggy 09-17-2009, 07:16 PM Nice!
Cactus Bob 09-17-2009, 07:26 PM Nice pair you have there!! :thmbsp: I only have a lonely 600 :tears:

One 600 is enough. Although the Kenwood is reliable. You do not need to mark who you are.
BroonsBane 09-17-2009, 07:41 PM Wow, sweet!
Inspiribomb 09-17-2009, 08:11 PM Awesome amp. Probably my single favorite piece of gear that I've ever owned. Sounds terrific, looks beautiful. If you've never seen it, you should remove the volume knob and bask in its hefty glory.
SoCal Sam 09-17-2009, 09:15 PM Got one. It has ring emitter outputs that are ultra fast but suffer for ringing. Still, a very nice sounding amp.

Seriously? Where did you get this idea? I'd like to see more on this.

Saw the ringing on the scope. Vertical attack and decay which is what you want but it overshoots and then undershoots the plateau several times before stabilizing.
Spalls 09-18-2009, 12:01 AM Nice looking hardware!

So you don't actually have a white paper or any other material on the subject? What leads you to believe that is a problem with the outputs being ring emitter? How do you know that's not some sort of feedback problem? Or even something out of spec? Maybe it's isolated to a single transistor model. Your statement is so vague it's not even valid.
And what makes you think you can hear such a thing anyways or that it has any correlation to sound quality?
SoCal Sam 09-18-2009, 08:19 AM ...Your statement is so vague it's not even valid...
You have only questions and nothing to add.

What I have to add is that many designers use ring emitter type transistors in their amp designs. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53508
The KA-907 is a very solid integrated amp and one I would like to own. And I would say the fact that it uses a multiple emitter type transistor does not put it at any kind of disadvantage, but rather the opposite. Regardless of what you saw on a scope having no audio design experience.
dr*audio 09-18-2009, 11:34 AM Excessive ringing on a square wave can be a sign of instability, but that doesn't have to be caused by the type of output transistor. If an amp is unstable it can be made stable by controlling the response poles and phase shift. There could even have been a bad component or missing cap causing the ringing you saw. Doesn't mean all KA-907s do that.
lha1992 09-19-2009, 03:24 PM Nice Kenwood amps you got there!
Those are some very rare and very good Kenwoods!
Congrats
jhoyt 09-19-2009, 05:07 PM Vintage Kenwood lust is now in top gear!

Hey Jeff-
I'm soon going to be the proud owner of your "other" KA-907.
Going to pick it up from Frank with the next batch of Marantz's he's
re-doing for me. I can't recommend Frank's work highly enough.
He truly is an artist bringing back the Vintage audio gear.
I'm sure our path's will cross one of these days.
Here's the list of my gear that's received (or in the process of) the Frank treatment
(and it all sounds and performs amazing...
Marantz: 4300, 4340, 2325, 2285B, 2270, 2240
Pioneer: SX-1250, SX-1010, SX-980, SX-950, SX-9980
Yamaha: CR2020, CR1020
Sony: TA 3200F/2000F, STR6065
Sansui: 9090, 990DB, 990
Holfi: Integra 5.1, Xara
Kenwood: KA-907 (coming soon....)

Congrats on your 907 buy. It is a great amplifier.
Layoutpad 10-25-2009, 08:59 PM @paul79 Thanks for asking...
That's a difficult question to answer. I've been listening to them all in rotation over the past months on JBL 4412A's, Vintage JBL 4412's, Klipsch Heresy II's, Fortes, Quintets, Norman Lab 8's and a set of KEF 103.2's
in various "listening rooms" in the house. So needless to say...I'm still trying to figure that one out myself.
The smaller Marantz's and the Sony's (4340 and 2240B) have a particular warmth and sweetness to them on the JBL's and Heresy's and I seem to listen to them the most. But the Yamaha's and Sansui's are pretty awesome too.
I find the Pioneer's to be a notch below them as far as refinement but great Rock n' Rollers. (But those are just my ears and my humble opinion.)
The Holfi's have a completely different sound. They run with Klipsch Quartets and have an extremely refined and detailed sound quality. (great for Jazz, Classical and soundtrack music with a late night glass of wine.)
How's that for a wishy-washy answer?
Layoutpad 10-26-2009, 06:32 PM Frank stopped by with the Amp and it sounds amazing.
(it's sure a big 'un)
Nice, rich full bodied flavor! Awesome.

Inspiribomb 10-29-2009, 05:23 PM Barely fits in that rack space, eh? She's a biggun for sure, even bigger with the rack handles mounted on the sides. Enjoy, a sweet amp for sure.
RebelKat 10-29-2009, 06:30 PM gorgeous! Congrats!

It's home debut is coming up later :D Hi Jeffe, I saw that beast in Steve's(targeteye) garage when I went down to his house with Bill(tensleep) to pick up some Marantz speakers he was very nice to pick up and hold for me. Great guy and very nice family. I asked him about it at that time and he didn't sound like he wanted to let it go, and now look who has it. :D I forgot to tell you that I have a pair of Titanium tweeters and a pair of graphite tweeters, that I demoed in the Seven's cabinets. They fit right in the original mount holes. I compared the two with the other cab having the original tweters and it was incredibly accurate, balanced and smooth. The graphite and titanium replacements sounded exactly as the originals. I could not tell them apart at any volume level. The replacements respond to the Sevens' masterful crossover network beautifully. Congrats on acquiring the Kenwood. It sure is purty! :thmbsp:
egl333 11-10-2009, 03:06 PM I find that the 907 seems to project incredible power comparable to amps rate at over 200w/ch even though it is rated at 150w/ch. It has fantastic transient response, reproduces excellent source signal, and is probably the best integrated amp made in that era. The rack handles are actually solid side panels, the toggle switches are aluminum rather that steel/plastic sleeve, and the volume control knob is totally aluminum weighing nearly 1/2 lb.

targeteye 12-18-2009, 08:44 PM Not sure how I missed this post. A belated congrats on getting it all fixed up and going well and just goes to show that I made the right decision to get it into the hands of someone that would give it it's due, so to speak. It would still be gathering dust if it were still mine.
It was my first piece of vintage kenwood stuff hi end stuff. I'll have to admit just its construction has me wondering if I should ditch the Marantz 3650/300DC combo in favor of a Kenwood supreme combo.
