Warm soapy water with a soft brush. Windex works good too, and I've had good luck with Turtle wax. The wax is a bit tough to wipe off, you'll need a soft towel. I don't like Nevr-Dull on aluminum faceplates, it leaves crap that is impossible to get rid of. I've heard a product called Blue Magic works really good too. The lettering on Marantz faceplates is fairly robust.

I have, but I tend to avoid them a bit. I don't go as heavy over them. You're OK with soapy water or Windex, go for it! The wax "catches" in the lettering a bit, you have to wipe it off in all sorts of directions. Faceplate cleaning is a case of using the gentlest cleaner that will do the job, so start with the soapy water, if it works, great!

Great thread. I was going to post something similar because I'll be getting a 2245 tomorrow and plan on giving it a good cleaning.

Ever use anything like SimpleGreen or Citrus based cleaners ?

I've tried Windex and 409 type cleaners but they don't get all the grime off aluminum faceplates. Maybe I''m not repeating as necessary ?

I'm sold on Blue Magic...after warm, soapy water - that's all I use. Awesome product that never disappoints. Never had an issue with lettering.

On an old beater Marantz...

Now, Windex, on the other hand, has caused some lettering to smudge on occasion. I'd be careful with anything ammonia-based.

Windex can definitely take lettering off; I speak from experience :(
As mentioned, mild dish detergent and water seems to work well. Make sure to wipe it dry thoroughly afterward though. On stubborn spots that don't include lettering, vinegar and fine steel wool works well. I have also used those deoxit wipes to great success, but have not risked it on the lettering. Not very economical in general, but when I use one for something else I run around touching up faceplates with it afterward.

Anyone have ideas of how to get PAINT off of an aluminum faceplate? Specifically, a Marantz 2250? Looks like one errant paintbrush hit the right side of the face plate and left paint on the aluminum.

I'd say steel wool again, this time with a little paint thinner. Keep that off the lettering, obviously.

On stubborn spots that don't include lettering, ... fine steel wool ....

If you use steel wool on an anodized aluminum face, for example a Marantz, I think you will ruin it absolutely. I can't honestly imagine how desperate I would have to be to use steel wool.

The products that have been mentioned all seem to work well and be quite safe.

The grime on the Marantz face in the MAXZ28 post might be 'human remains' or 'smokers residue' but you can see how well it can be removed with quite safe products. Even stuff like paint 'splatters' or 'roller spray' will come off if rubbed with liquid automotive wax. But truly, steel wool on an aluminum face.... scary for me....I mean, I would not use that on any of my gear.

Oh man, I can't believe that didn't occur to me! Sorry guys. :worried: Everything I have around here is just plain old brushed aluminum and the ultra fine wool doesn't do a thing to it. You should be able to use a piece of one of those non-scratch plastic pads on an anodized surface, though. Can I change my suggestion for the tough spots to that?

If its interior latex paint, you can use isopropyl alcohol to remove it. If its solvent based paint, you can use acetone.

Honestly guys, try liquid car wax for the paint .... If it won't hurt your car's paint, it won't hurt your Marantz .... and I have used it successfully .... just be a bit patient with paint.... you are letting the oils in the wax soak into the paint to soften it....so you use patience and you wreck the face... a 2325 is worth any amount of extra caution and extra effort.

Gentle, gentle, gentle.

Yeah, definitely don't use anything abrasive. Rubbing alcohol and/or paint thinner but I sure as hell wouldn't try any paint thinner on the lettering. Liberal rubbing alcohol cleans faces great, just don't rub real hard and its fine on the lettering. Post a pic!
