Ok sixt8mopar via the AK pony express picked up my hard boot for my Miata now we gotta figure the best and easiest way of packing it for shipping while also protecting it from getting destroyed in shipping. Here's some pics of it:

As you can see it is made of fiberglass, so any ideas?

That puppy is gonna cost you because it's so big.

Fedex Ground does over 130" L+2W+2D now, but there's a hefty surcharge, and a limit around 160".

Find out how big it is. Then wrap it in bubble or some supporting spray foam and then sandwich it in between some 2" sheet foam. Make sure you fill the end gaps with foam blocks to make it stiff. Then wrap that in corrugated and hope it isn't over size. I don't think Fedex or UPS will ship crates, so if you go that route yo may have to use a freight company; I think Grumpy and Wards might have some ideas there.

It looks like a huge PITA to me. You may need to do a road trip; it may be cheaper and less work.

Look in your yellow pages for corragator (box manufacturer). You are looking for a "bike box". They are double wall shipping container and about 70" long. should work well for that, you can sandwich it between some styrofoam or 1/2" bubble wrap.

They probably have used bike boxes at Wal-Mart? Hopefully sixt8mopar will get into the new page soon and he can tell us weight and such.

I know people who have shipped Chevelle fiberglass hoods. They all use Greyhound. Yup the bus company.

Even so I would do as Wards says an get a bike box. I walk up to the local bike shop all the time and ask for Mountain bike boxes.

some bike boxes aren't tall enough, contact a art gallery or picture framing company. they mail out large picture and will have a supplier for these boxes

or, from the same place, maybe re-use a box in which they received mat boards.

You can get the bike box at UPS stores. About $15 (call one for actual size), or get large sheets of flat stock corragated. They're about 7' x 4'

Wrap with bubble wrap ( three layers)

Encase with 2" styrofoam all six sides.

Cover it all with corragated or try the bike box.

This packaging will meet UPS standards, and will be good if there's an insurance claim.

And yes, because of the size, it will be costly.

Get an estimate of the completed boxed item, on the UPS or FEdex websites.
Fedex will probably be cheaper, or maybe DHL cheaper yet.
