I was attempting to record something on my cassette deck and smelled an electrical type odor..low and behold my L channel is no longer working.I have rudimentary knowledge base and checked the internal fuses ...all good.Any ideas as to what happened? Thanks. Is this something I can ferret out myself with limited tools?:scratch2:

Usually smoke and continued sound from one channel do NOT happen TOGETHER.

The right channel works? Have you checked to be sure the speakers are both working ok, and that the cables aren't shorting out somehow?

If so take a pair of jumpers, connect the left pre-out to the right amp in and vise-versa, set the switch near it from normal to separated and see if the dead channel moves.

If so it is a preamp problem. More testing instructions will follow.

Do you have a receiver with pre-out and amp in jacks in back?

More info is needed:
WHAT source were you using? Tuner, Aux, Phono?

HOW and where did you have the tape hooked up etc...

go and download the service manual from kallhovde.com/pioneer/
then study it, at least LOOK at EVERY page... info will osmose in...

Do you have a Digital Multi Meter?
