U2 has a bunch of LPs and I just want to get the best sound quality. One example is The Unforgetable Fire. Are rereleases on vinyl just to make it "louder" like CD rereleases?

I have only heard the Original U2 pressings which as long as you find a good one are great ! also most i have seen used run $5 - $9 used vs. the new one's at $25 ...... i do know they remastered the newer Vinyl but have not heard it , I have read a few people got some pressings that were marked up .
If your gonna buy new , i'd get 1 & see if you like it 1st .....

I have heard that the U2 180-gram pressings are terrible.

There also seems to be some question of their legality. They are licensed through some outfit in Russia, but pressed somewhere in Europe - or so they say. They may be made from CDs, like many of the borderline reissues.

Some good ideas you got there!! Especially to get just one first. I got a bunch of U2 vinyl a week ago from my sister - didn't know she had so many. They seem to be in pretty good condition but i want to wait until after I purchase and use a RCM on them first. U2 is my fave band so I don't mind getting sealed copies, as long as I am not buy al lower quality vinyl then the options avaialble.

I have no opinion on whether those guys know what they are talking about, but it is certainly an interesting discussion.

I still have not unsealed the new copy of Joshua Tree, on 180g vinyl, but a lot of people have said it is excellent. I have several 45RPM 12" singles from the album, so I have some excellent material to compare it to.

Well, let us know, David. The whole discussion over there revolved around the quality of the covers and the labels, not whether they sounded good or not. They could just be a legit reissue with sloppy packaging.

However, I have heard the sound quality itself, as opposed to the quality of the vinyl, is not up to the originals.

Do you think they are fake, even if purcahsed from reputable establishments like Music Direct? I would think they'd do their home work and not buy it from a nobody vendor/label or whatever it is that they need to look out for.

My older Joshua Tree and War sound just fine. I think that's the best way to go. If there's ever an official release I'll jump on it though.

I have thing for originals.

btw... I just picked up an original NM copy of The Unforgetable Fire for a buck at Rasputin's. And I mean NM, it looks like it's never been played. :D

Peter do you ever get out to Amoeba Music in Hollywood? They should have piles of U2 on new and used vinyl for real cheap. I just came back from the one in Haight-Ashbury in S.F. tonight. The place is wild!

ps. And all the original pressings of U2 I bought when first released all sound great.

The Unforgettable Fire is imo one of the worst recorded albums of all time in fact having read a book on U2 Bono can't stand the mix either. I do believe it is available as a MOFI recording on Vinyl but I have never heard it. As I said it is my opinion though, always sounded like it was recorded underwater.

Yeah, people have been telling me about the single-celled-animal store but i havne't had a chance to go there yet (plus I just got my TT last week and before that its been 20 years since I spun vinyl!). Glad you had a blast there! Probably go next week.

In the meantime I'm having fun playing some of my (and my siblings) vinyl that I haven't heard in decades! Including a whole lotta U2 45's and 12" single (also purchased when they 1st came out).

Which book? I have a few but haven't read them all.

I think I have the vinyl (not the MOFI version), just haven't had a chance to listen to it (plus I want to clean it -RCM on order - before i play it). I'll let you know how it compares to the CD, which I agree it sounds dull, but I think it works for some of their songs, making it sound gloomy/mysterious especially for that instrumental song just before Bad.

I think Yanni recordings suck more. Never heard so much HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!

Looking through that link to the Record Collectors Guild thread it doesn't appear anyone is really able to confirm anything about this. It seems strange to me that anyone would get away with mass distribution of unauthorized vinyl re-presses of one of the biggest bands in the world, through all the big, reputable sellers, without someone noticing and putting on the brakes.

I trust you noticed that the link is to posts that are over two years old. I strongly suspect that the items they are talking about are not the ones that MusicDirect is selling today.

There may very well be multiple reissues, or maybe a bootlegger slipped his pressing into a legitimate stream of commerce.

We are still waiting for someone who has a 180-gram repressing of any U2 LP to report on the sound quality.

for me, i look for the originals when they are affordable. Rattle & Hum, Joshua Tree are 2 that are farily easy to find. i found mine, look unplayed and paid about $5-8 each. well worth it if you can find them.

I agree with you. The hardest to find (in great shape) and expensive ones are Achtung Baby! (particurarly famous because of naked Adam) and Zooropa. Those just sounds awesome on vinyl. I have the UK and Dutch pressings respectively, both very recommended :thmbsp:

last night I ordered Boy, October, War and Joshua Tree all on 180gm. I think they are all remastered and I know for sure JT doesn't use compression, plus it has double wide grooves so it comes on 2 vinyl discs.

I'll review when they come in.
