I'll start with Esperanza Spalding. 23 years old, plays bass and sings like an angel. Looks like one too.

I have a CD by Aaron Parks called Invisible Cinema that I enjoy.

I would put him in the young & up and coming column.

Gerald Clayton,Pianist. His first recording is called Two-Shade.I've seen him perform a couple of times solo,& He was with the Roy Hargrove Quintet when I saw him at the Detroit Jazz Fest two years ago.Definetly an up & comer.

Medeski, Martin and Wood~ I wouldn't necessarily call them up and coming but they are quite unknown and fairly young for jazz musicians. They are simply amazing and one of the best jazz trios around these days IMHO. Their jazz style blends with a lot of funk too but regardless it's all jazz no matter how you look at it. They've done some great albums with John Scofield too. Definitely the real deal.

If you have never heard them before... Check them out here at their myspace page. You won't be sorry you did!

My 19 year old son turned me on to them, they are good beyond their years.

The aforementioned Gerald Clayton album. He comes from a great pedigree. I've seen him perform 3 times over the last 2 years. A rising star folks. Good stuff!

Roy Hargrove. Dude can play the smoothest trumpet. Innovative tune writer who doesn't focus on the standards.

Anat Cohen. Israeli born clarinetist, saxophonist. Great music from her album Notes From The Village. Her Detroit Groove Society performance was most excellent.
