I have a Sony SLV-575UC VCR that's having playback issues. Whenever I play a tape, it starts out fine but then it starts to pause every few seconds for about half a second, then continues to play. It does the pause thing at intervals of about 8 seconds. Does anyone know what could be causing this and if it can be fixed? Do I have to take it to a VCR repair shop, or could I fix it myself? I'd like to get this VCR working again because it's a really nice machine, and I have a bunch of tapes I'd like to rip to DVD. Thanks for any advice you can give.

I have no idea what is wrong with it, but I'd probably stop putting my tapes in it if you value them....just in case.
Could be it's dirty, or maybe belt(s)...dunno. But, one way to look at it is that it's broken now, what harm is there is taking the lid off and giving a look inside?
IMO, unless it's a really special VCR, I'd probably just keep an eye out for a used one. You even see some of the industrial models for sale these days for pennies on the dollar.

If it is damaged beyond repair, or it cost more than $100 to fix, you may want to purchase a DVD recorder/VCR. That's a great alternative to separate units, and can be found at good prices these days.

Sounds like the Capstan Motor bearing problem these had. Sony part number for the "plain bearing ass'y" is/was X-2625-269-1, if you can find one. I think it's an obsolete part nowadays.
