What happened to this person? She had CHOPS when CRAP was essential. The last I really remember seeing of her was when she was a main act at the last H.O.R.D.E Festival in 1998, along with Barenaked Ladies, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals and of course, Blues Traveler (it was John's idea afterall). It's tragic that Woodstock '99 and the death of his guitarist along with his own medical troubles put the fire out for him permanently.
Meanwhile back at the speakers...this is indeed the CD with Ani DeFranco's lauded "32 Flavors" and another tune that garnered much notice in ADULTLAND, "Crazy". This woman's instrument doesn't fail her-ever. Even if I didn't catch all the lyrics while eating and typing here, nothing once bit me or bugged me about it while playing. I more than thouroughly enjoyed it and I can listen a few times without fatigue, which to me is a comfortable sign. Other artists of whom I can say that include George Benson, The Cars, Thomas Dolby, Phil Collins, Cocteau Twins, Yaz and of course Henry Mancini and Herb Alpert. Probably Carly Simon also.
Alana had a quality that cannot be matched by the likes of Norah Jones or Sunshine Anderson, although they are damn good on their own terms. More solid and more seasoned compared to two brighter, maybe prettier voices. Her maturity wears well into the mist of time, it did not need Carlos Santana to be discovered nor any family resemblences to bolster it. When Alana took the main stage at the Idaho Center Amphitheater that afternoon, 92+ degree weather and $2.00 water samples and the fact that there were nearly 5 hours left in that very long day in which I found $20.00 only allowed you to sit on the grass all ceased mattering. It was an excellent, well run set. Maybe I wouldn't do that again knowing the physical condition I was in even then or now, but I remember how I got to hear maybe 10 or 15 major and small acts on big and smaller stages until nearly eleven. That was something I'll never forget, nor will I stop smiling when I remember it.
