Hope someone out there can help me. I bought a Toshiba 3950 (no mods, yet) about six months ago and it was working fine :) . Recent I noticed that every CD I play through it sounds distorted :worried: . For example I was listening to "Come Away With Me" by Norah Jones and it sounds like the drums, piano, and her voice are buzzing. Kind of like an echo or phase distortion. :pity: I thought that it might be my amp (console Packard Bell PP EL84) but when I switch to another player (JVC DVD player, forgot the model) the buzzing disappeard. I played abunch of other CDs through the Toshiba and ALL of them exhibit the same phase/buzz distortion. Could it be that I have to put this thing out to pasture and shoot it? :uzi: Or can I fix this problem by doing the Rossi or Swenson mod.

Thanks!

Make sure your VCR is away from it, and place the DVD player away from any power transformers, I had this problem with my Toshiba collection last year, my Panasonic VHS deck was interfering with them, good luck!!

with my Tosh 3960 with much the same symptoms you describe. Turns out that I had added a parallel set of audio connectors to the TV - used a T connector - so that the family wouldn't have to worry about the state of switches on the preamp. This caused a loading problem where, with the TV off, the Tosh would distort. Disconnecting the parallel set of cables has it back to its excellent self.

Re: Swenson mods to fix: Actually that will make the problem worse in that this mod removes the buffering stages used for impedance matching. The Vinnie mod has you change out that same IC used for the buffering stage.

I would investigate any recent changes you've made to your setup. Generally, my experience with most consumer electronics these days is that if they don't fail in the first 30-60 days they're fine.

Cheers,

David

Murphy's Law disclaimer: Now that I've said that about failures.....it will happen.
