View Full Version : like to find like minds on this kind of music
aystrick 11-16-2004, 06:44 PM Is anyone familiar with
http://www.20thcongress.com/
or http://www.soulive.com/mx/site.html
or http://levtron.com/
?
It would roughly be Jazz/funk, or acid jazz. Any suggestions of other bands that play this type music. I loooooove it!
JDaniel 11-16-2004, 09:51 PM I can't say I'm a "fan" of the genre, but once in a while enjoy something a little musically different.
Two bands I have in my collection are Tribal Tech (definitely acid jazz), and The Dixie Dregs (leans towards bluegrass at times).
Most large record shops have an acid jazz section, albeit small. Check it out sometime.

Reel 2 Reel 11-16-2004, 10:41 PM 'Soulive' is great stuff...i listen to them all the time...love that John Scoefeild on the guitar!!!.
tentoze 11-16-2004, 11:40 PM Just the snippets I listened to didn't really sound like "acid jazz" as I understand it, but I'm rotten at labels anyway. For a dose of some relatively out-there acid jazz, check out Longineu Parsons, a veteran of Sun Ra's Arkestra, among other gigs. He was a good friend of mine through high school, and is a a tremendous talent, if yr into what he does. Kind of obscure to find anything recorded by him, but worth the search. Note that in the AMG linked page below, it lists him as a member of Yellowcard, which is not true- it's his son, Longineu Jr., that's the drummer for Yellowcard.

aystrick 11-17-2004, 03:13 PM Yes Reel 2 Reel, I am a huge fan of John Scofield too. "A Go Go" was one of my favorite discs, Uberjam gets alittle out there but "Tomorrow Land" is a nice, mellow cut from that disc.
RastaFish 11-23-2004, 12:51 PM Other similar bands that you may like would include:
Ulu
Karl Denson's Tiny Universe
Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW)
Garaj Mahal
Galactic
Mike Clark's Prescription Renewal
I have live recordings of all these bands, and I am happy to share them on CDR's. My complete list of live recordings is at
www.phishhook.com/lists/RastaFish
Also, I did not think John Scofield was a member of Soulive, although I may be wrong. If you like his "A Go Go" album you will probably like MMW, they were his backing band on that album!
aystrick 02-08-2005, 07:42 PM Yes Rastafish, this is it...actually I really like all those bands. I tried to find out more about Mike Clark's Prescription Renewal but couldn't find any audio samples. Looks like they have a great lineup though. No, John Scofield isn't a member of Soulive, pretty sure. And MM&W...the bomb! John Medeski can play about any keyboard instrument out there, a Mellotron? How many of those do you hear anymore?
RastaFish 02-09-2005, 03:48 PM The current incarnation of Mike Clarks's Prescription Renewal is in Baltimore this Saturday night, I haven't seen them in a good while so I may head up the road for this one. I hear the current line-up includes Skerik on sax and Robert Walter on Keys.
I saw the Prescription Renewal a while back at the 9:30 Club in DC and the lineup was Mike Clark on drums, Skerik on sax, Robert Walter on keys, DJ Logic on turntables, and Charlie Hunter on guitar/bass (as only Charlie Hunter can). Possibly the most talent I have ever seen together on one stage!
If you want to hear some nice live recordings of Mike Clark et al hit me with a PM, I have several really good recordings of those guys that I would be happy to share...
aystrick 02-09-2005, 08:19 PM OK, I'm an idiot. What is a PM?
Reel 2 Reel 02-09-2005, 09:20 PM 'P'rivate 'M'essage.... :thmbsp:
