View Full Version : How to pack tall, slim speakers?
Hi guys, I'm getting ready to list my BJL L80T's up on the 'Bay but before I do I need to figure out how to pack them properly.
Up until now, I've just used a 28" tall 'Dish Pack' box from U-Haul, but these JBL's are 32" tall, and no box company that I asked has a box both tall and deep enough.
How do you guys ship your tower speakers? Is there a place to get 'off the shelf' boxes in the proper dimensions?
Thanks, Jay
Don C 11-20-2004, 07:28 PM Two choices. Best is to use a wardrobe box. I can get these at the local box dealer for about 12.00 each. They are nice double wall boxes, way oversized in all dimensions, and you will want to cut down the height to fit.
Next best choice is to buy two dish pack boxes for each speaker and join them. You will want to use good strapping tape all the way round the join and also longways all the way round the boxes to be sure that the package stays together.
Thanks for the ideas, Don. I'd hate to have to use them as they're both 'ugly' ways of getting the job done, but I guess them's the breaks! :thmbsp:

Don C 11-21-2004, 12:52 AM Forgot to mention, my local box dealer is happy to build boxes to any specified dimensions. He is happy to make them because he gets to charge a lot of money for the custom boxes. I don't usually do it because of the cost, also he only makes single wall boxes, I prefer double wall. So I usually go with oversized standard size boxes instead. But it may be another option for you, call around.

Cut 2in foam insulation panels to encapsulate your speaker and tape it up tight then put that inside your custom sized box. You might want to send the grills seperate in their own boxes. . .
Another method for those (wish were mine) speakers is to make a cap for both ends with the 2in foam panels just so it helps keep it from moving around inside the box. Speaker boxes are inherantly strong but drivers are not. You want to avoid the shock to the big magnets. The 2in foam will help.
The best way is using 2K foam sprayed inside the box so it form fits the speaker. Some shippers offer this. If theyt were mine I would find those places that offer that service.
And the best advice; Call around as Don C. mentioned
asynchronousman 12-04-2004, 09:44 PM I should think that unless they are very spendy/rare/unobtainium grilles, If you custom cushion and wrap them and envelope them in corregated double-wall and/or plywood, they could be sent in the same package, especially if they are further isolated from the box by solid foam and they are kept immobile.

GordonW 12-30-2004, 01:07 AM Man, I wish I'd read this thread earlier... :sigh:
I have a friend, who HAS a pair of JBL L80t boxes! No speakers, no packing material (I'd just use layered foam sheeting as described, inside the boxes), just the boxes!
I bet I could probably get 'em for like, $5 each...
Regards,
Gordon.

Yes ... Yes .... the magnets are heavy and can easily warp the basket frame especially stamped frames.
I recently got a AR 8" subwoofer ... the cone would barely move ... I opened it up and found the frame was warped.
I replaced it with a $17 dollar ... 400 watt peak / 40 watts RMS ... car/auto 8" woofer sold at Kragen's Auto Parts ... LOL. It actually does fit inside the cutout ... kind of snug but it is working and sounds okay. But I think I will pop it out and use some rough sandpaper and make the outside parameter a tinge ... umm ... wider ... so it will drop in .. nice and easily.
