It's been a tradition around these parts for "many moons" to play Arlo Guthrie - Alice's Restaurant Masacree on Thanksgiving Day.

Consider this your friendly reminder. Actually, Dave918's avatar reminded me. But I would have remembered anyway.

The tradition with me started with my brother. Our local classic rock station where we grew up in East Tenn (101.5 WQUT - Sandy G. knows the station) played it ever year at noon on Thanksgiving. It became a ritual for my brother and I to get together and listen before Thanksgiving lunch.

"You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant
You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant
Walk right in it's around the back
Just a half a mile from the railroad track
You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant (ceptin' Alice of course).

Yeah, KSAN used to played it here but didn't when they became employee owned. :pity: It was cool to do the airplay tradition but I do have the album.
somewhere. :scratch2: It has been a year.

WQUT-FM still plays it every Thanksgiving at noon. Some things never change -- Foe

Having been thrown in jail in Daytona Beach on the day after Thanksgiving, 1968 (the chemically impaired experience enhanced and made all the more topical and poignant by a trio singing several verses of the classic tune while inhabiting the cell, to the insistent disapproval of Officer Oliver- "Officer Sir, is this what you like about your job, arresting kids having a good time?"), Arlo still holds a warm place in my heart. Hobo's Lullabye is a superb album.

Sirius "The Vault" says that they will be playing that song all day. I won't be home, but maybe I will take the disk with me, to play on the road.

The local FM station I'm listening to just played Alice's Restaurant at noon.
I remember that tune as being more than "just a song." It resonated with the mood of a generation. What happened?

Found a copy at the dump or somewhere in my travels earlier this year. Gonna clean it up and give it a spin sometime today. My wife and kids are barely aware of the story (to my surprise)...

For anyone who can appreciate Arlo's music, I highly recommend his 1970 album, 'Washington County'.

By the way, I did see Arlo & his family play live at Carnegie Hall, Thanksgiving 1999. It was a great show. His daughter, Sarah Lee, is-a mighty fine :)

Isn't there some sort of dread disease that is in Arlo's family, that renders you pretty much incapacitated, & eventually kills you? Seems like he debated whether or not to have children for fear of passing it on to them. -Sandy G.

Yep, his dad Woody died in the early 50's from it. Heard a whole lot of Woody's music growing up. :)
