View Full Version : 8 tracks...Fess up!
twintwelve1484 12-08-2004, 11:12 AM Ok, how many of you have an 8-track unit as part of your collection, just for laughs?
I've found that it's a thing that non-audio-geeks are the most amused with. First question after they find out that I like old audio gear is, "Do you have an 8 track?"
I have an early Panasonic (Pre-Technics, when the logo was all caps P A N A S O N I C 8 track recorder and player with lovely green vu meters.
Whatchoo got?
Chad Hauris 12-08-2004, 11:22 AM I have an 8-track in my 1978 Grand Marquis which I still use. We get customers in our shop for repair of and to buy 8-track players.
heathkit tv 12-08-2004, 11:34 AM I don't have a player but I do have a lone 8 Track tape. You wanna know the title? Do ya really? Ok......
It's.....
"Big Band Disco" Performed by the Chattanooga Disco Band of course.
I shat you not!!! It says both Polygram and Polystar on the label with no credit given to the producer (what a surprise, eh?). Found it at a yard sale (I think) probably for less than a buck. It cracks me up just looking at it........the copyright is 1979, the end of the disco era......just goes to show you how perverted disco had become in the final days.
Would anyone be interested (or twisted enough) to transfer this to CD for me? They could keep the 8 Track as payment. Thanks!
Anthony

I'd do it, but to do it RIGHT, you need a CD changer and 4 CD's, so I can make it switch CD's right in the middle of the songs. I'll even sample the "ka-CHUNK" and add it to the end of each CD...
brainsmasher 12-08-2004, 11:53 AM I have the MAC Daddy of 8 track players an RCA 5 tape changer in working codition. I came in 2nd or 3rd in the low fi contest a while back with it. One day it will be in my showpiece system for all to see and lust after.
Chad Hauris 12-08-2004, 12:49 PM Oh...that reminded me, we have a Telex carousel 8-track player that we bought at the shop, it seems like it can hold 10 or more 8-tracks. It is mounted in a console cabinet with the carousel arranged vertically behind the doors. It seems like a problem occured with it soon after we got it so we have not got around to fixing it yet.
Vintage TX 12-08-2004, 01:18 PM I have a couple of Panasonic's and one working in my car. :sing:

BKville 12-08-2004, 03:45 PM I have 2 8 track decks hooked into my system right now.. Ha...
A small Zenith player / recorder and what a workhorse it is.. I've had it around 3 years alot of days it cranks the the tunes for 6-8 hours straight.. Imagine That.. Ha.. My daily driver...
The other deck is an Akai player / recorder I believe the first model Akai put out.. It's truely a high end deck and the best I've heard.. But it's a little on the touchy side.. Which kinda reeks...
If you have the right set up this format can be quite nice.. I run my tapes through a Pioneer EX-9000 Dynamic Expander I bought from TA and this little unit really improves the sound quality.. You also need to be willing to give your tapes a good tune-up when first getting them..
My tape collection exist of a little over 500 and you can view my list here.. My List... (http://www.angelfire.com/rock3/bkville/my_collection.html)
And a few 100 for sale... For Sale.... (http://www.angelfire.com/rock3/bkville/index.html)
Later, Brent
twintwelve1484 12-08-2004, 04:15 PM What is this "TA" that everyone hath spake of?
Donny 12-08-2004, 04:20 PM I do have an 8track! even worse I have the casset adaptor made by sparkomatic!!! I don't use it :)
rca2000 12-08-2004, 04:38 PM I have an old sears car 8 track deck(it says 4+8, can use a four track tape). it is a BIG unit, with to-3 transistors in the amp. hasn't been fired up in over 15 years or so, for some reason I just didn't part with it(maybe I figured someone out there would need it sometime).
as for TA, I am not sure what it means, maybe the AK'er Toasted Almond, but I KNOW what T&A means!!
Nick_the_'Nole 12-08-2004, 04:41 PM Got an early-ish Ampex deck in my system, prolly 1971 or so if i had to guess, along with a few tapes to go with it... I actually do use it once in awhile although I need to lube the rollers before I play it anymore cause it binds up frequently. Plus it is great for s**ts and giggles, and for some reason girls are quite impressed that I have one. (College is great.) Can't go wrong with that.
colortrakker 12-08-2004, 06:08 PM Yeah, I've got one. It's a little GE stereo that looks like it was made in about 1977 or '78. Got a little storage bin for mics (included!) and funky blue speaker cloth! Picked it up for $10 at a flea market. Did I mention it's a recorder? With fast-forward? And a broken power switch?
Every once in a while I happen upon 8-tracks. A guy gave me a bagful of about 40 or so because he was tired of having them clutter up his store. I've got about 50 now.
My pride and joy (you can't get any more '70s than this) is called All Ears. It was released by Radio Shack and it's 10 songs all about CB Radio! I've also got it on vinyl. Great stuff (but prob'ly not as great as Anthony's Big Band Disco).
Sandy G 12-08-2004, 07:01 PM Omigawd ! I remember at McCallie back about 1974, some brilliant idiot decided we were all hiding our dope in 8-tracks. So, a bunch of the teachers went around & everybody HAD to open up ALL their 8-tracks for inspection. A buddy of mine, Jack Allen, musta had 250-300 of 'em, a lot of 'em got ruined being opened. I don't think the fool-asses found any dope, either. But the school administration was CERTAIN we were all hiding dope-apparently "The Caine Mutiny" was lost on them...-Sandy G.
H2s04 12-08-2004, 10:32 PM I have several boxes of 8-track tapes, but I havent even taken a look at them; I don't have an 8-track unit...yet...
I have to wait till the "electronics" area opens april first; it closes for snow-related reasons every december 1st
Trawlerman 12-09-2004, 03:21 AM I think you win Rolf :)
2DualsNotEnough 12-09-2004, 06:26 AM I almost bought an akai 8 track today, just for the great meters on it.17 bucks at the thrift. But everytime I buy one,it just sits.8 tracks sound like ca-ca.
jimmy
CUlater 12-09-2004, 07:49 AM I have a Sony (TC-288, I think?) recorder, a relatively 'late-model' (1979 or so?) Monkey Wards recorder, a GE player that matches my first receiver system I got back in 1974, and my grandaddy of-em-all 8-track, an Akai CR-80D-SS quad (!) recorder. Apparently made of lead, cuz it must weigh 30 lbs all by itself.
I have a collection of about 100 tapes, I'm guessing.
Haven't had any of them in my systems since about a year and a half ago, when I used a P A N A S O N I C recorder (since been sold).
Oh yeah, and another Akai, a CR-83D, I think their last 8-track unit. Cool round 'clock hand' elapsed time counter...
Lefty 12-09-2004, 10:27 AM Yea, I too have one, a rather nice Pioneer HR-100 recorder deck. It does Dolby even which takes out most all the 8 track hiss, although I have found only a couple of prerecorded carts that were Dolby encoded. I guess Dolby was too late to save 8 track as cassettes were coming on strong by the time.
Lefty
madpioneer 12-09-2004, 11:01 AM Lets see I have:
PIONEER:
H-R100 Rec/Player in my SPEC rig
RH-65 Rec/Player also in SPEC rig
H-R99 Rec/Player in my SA-9500 rig
An extra not in use RH-60 PIONEER version not the Centrex Labeled one!
Also an old GE portable 8 Track/Radio boom box stored in my garage
all in working order.
Last year sold my AKAI GX model after having it since 1986.
Have also owned a Craig model along with a J C Penny unit.
I still own around 300 to 400 8 tracks I bought during the 70's and early 80's
Tho I won't list them here they are mostly Rock/Hard Rock
Anything from:
Angel to Budgie, Boston, Fleetwood Mac, Ted Nugent, KISS, REO Speedwagon, to ZZ TOP etc....
My friend's thought I was crazy buying all those carts! They said vinyl was the way to go. Since I was poor and could not afford a really nice TT I decided I liked the fact that you could just insert the cart and listen to repeated plays while crashing out. Plus no turning over of LP's or loading the second disc for a live album. Tho I sacrificed sound sonicly and great art, pics and inserts I thought it suited me for that time of no $$$.
Now it brings back the memories to those times. If a cart is in good shape and not all eaten up my 99 and 100 models play the things great and sound very good and clean for and 8 track anyway! No where near the sonics of LP or CD for sure but still its nostalgic non-the less!
harmkard330guy 12-09-2004, 01:12 PM i have a rca xrossx 8 track player and some 8 track tapes chews them up though

YEAH!The Akai I saw had that elapsed time counter!Awesome looking unit. But kind of like buying a gold plated Dot Matrix printer. :D
leadlike 10-09-2008, 06:55 AM I am pretty seriously into 8 tracks. I have a small home player, but it is the ONLY thing I have to listen to in my car-a '99 Bonneville. I mounted a special rack into the floor just to hold more tapes, plus I have a couple of cases in the trunk that I can break out for longer trips. At one point I probably had about 400 tapes, but I realised that I just didn't need that much Mantovani. I probably now have about 100 tapes.
I'm proud to have a few tapes that my dad bought for his '69 mustang fastback. That was the first car he bought new, and he went all out with the tape player upgrade. Sadly, he melted most of his tapes by keeping them in the backseat. That huge rear window in the fastback let in the fierce summer sun and toasted many of them. For some reason, he saved them and I managed to get a few running after thirty years.
stereofanboy 10-09-2008, 07:18 AM I have a Panasonic and a Realistic TA-882, both with FF and recording capability. I own 3 or 4 tapes and never listen to any of them. I also have 2 Soundesign stereos that have radio, cassette, 8-track and inputs for aux. which you can use for a cd player. These I use every day because they also have a digital alarm clock built-in.
Beechwoods 10-09-2008, 07:44 AM I've got a couple of 8 track players. My main one is a Realistic TR-801 which records as well as plays and has a couple of nice VU meters up front, plus it actually sounds quite good playing tapes that have been properly refoamed. The other is an Amerex TX-800 which is a cart and receiver in one. Not such good performance out of this one so I keep it as a curiosity more than anything.
I find it fun collecting my favourite stuff on 8-track. It's amazing how much NOS tape there is around the place. Still needs refoaming and sometimes re-foiling, but it makes a nice noise on a nostalgic night :)
Vinylguru 10-09-2008, 08:45 AM I have some 8 track players. One for home use, and a few car players. I have many cartridges too. My latest bargain was Gram Parsons GP. Sealed.
Was found on ebay in Great Britain.
Strawman 10-09-2008, 10:04 AM Don't be afraid to start new threads, this one is almost 4 years old...
ARguy 10-09-2008, 10:09 AM I have multiple players/recorders as well as tapes. It's a part of the past that was fun for me so I like to keep it around for a smile or two!
titanstats 10-09-2008, 12:13 PM Somewhere lurking in my closet is a mighty Akai Quad recorder -- it is built like a beast.
chillwolf 10-09-2008, 12:29 PM I have a JC Penny receiver that has an 8 track player and a cassette player/recorder in it. I probably have about 50, 8 track tapes. Actually have a Dire Straits album on 8 track.
I was looking at some 8 track tapes yesterday that just came into the GW. A man was standing there and asked me if I had something that still worked to play them on. I said yep, sure do!
NCPatsFan 10-09-2008, 12:58 PM Love my 8-Tracks! I have recordable decks on all my systems. My favorite is my Wollensak 8056. I also modified the storage cubby in the dash of my '03 Ram pickup and installed an 8-track player. When people ride with me, they never want to hear the CD player.
Twenty20Man 10-09-2008, 02:31 PM man those 8 track days, yes- tales of topographic oceans ..i bought that 8 track 4-5 times it was so long the tape would stretch...i remember the tapes screwing up and then them bouncing on the hwy (yeah i know..i don't litter anymore)
