source/player level, do you have a receiver with DAC which handles this, or do you have an external DAC which sits between your source and amplification?
I am asking this question in the context of a typical dual use HT/stereo setup, utilising DVD-V/DVD-A, a CD-P, or SACD-P.
I will post some remarks after I see some responses to these questions ...
I have alot of boxes: Seperate transport (w/out-board ps) - jitter filter - DAC. The later two share a custom ps, the massive M.P.S. pictured. MikE

Hi Walt,
In my main music system I use an integrated CD player so no need for external DAC, more cables, jitter, anti-jitter boxes etc.
Haven't felt the need for a separate DAC as the Marantz I use is so well balanced in it's one box form.
With HT (using a separate system), digital signals (DVD-V, LD) go into my Sony pre/processor's DACs, get processed, then onto the amps.

In my combo 2-ch/HT system, my preamp does the conversion. This is the biggest obstacle for me as far as going to multi-channel hi-rez. My preamp has only 2-ch analog inputs. Multi-channel is via digital inputs. SACD and DVD-A don't allow multi-channel digital outputs. Hence, I won't be going that route any time soon.

My CDP is one-box and I use a stereo amp for the DVDP as well. Never really considered a DAC upgrade.

In my system I use no external dac's. Both my dvd-a player and my receiver will do 192/24 if needed. It is a H/T setup but is used for music/movies 75/25.
