View Full Version : I AM the Phantom of the OPERA!
Kamakiri 01-02-2005, 06:14 PM Yeah, yet another stupid Kamakiri acquisition ;)
Picked this up yesterday from Freecycle, it's an 1881 Estey reed organ. Needs some work, but it does play as is.
Pretty cool. Be careful with those old leather bellows! (They may tear and leak air)
Sandy G 01-02-2005, 06:20 PM Tim, one iof these days you're gonna have to build a big building just to put all of YOUR "good junk" into-never mind yr wife's or kids'. What if the kids end up w/a bad case of "pack-rat-itis" like their dad ?!? <grin>-Sandy G.
Rockmonton 01-02-2005, 06:30 PM NICE!! that is pretty sweet looking ........
RuSsMaN 01-02-2005, 07:10 PM How big is your house Tim?
Chad Hauris 01-02-2005, 07:15 PM That's a great looking reed organ! I also got a new organ recently, Hammond RT-3...works well.
Chad Hauris 01-02-2005, 07:16 PM Hammond tone cabinet f-40:
Kamakiri 01-02-2005, 08:32 PM How big is your house Tim?
1,000 square feet give or take, not including the 28 x 20 finished basement, which is where all of my crap resides.
Kinda makes you wonder :wtf: will be next
outlawmws 01-02-2005, 08:37 PM Great score Kam!
Rockmonton 01-02-2005, 08:50 PM ooohhhhh i wnat that tone cabinet....... mmmmmmmmmmm those are so wicked to mod for guitar and have such a wicked retro look
B3Nut 01-02-2005, 08:51 PM Wow...cool RT-3 score! Same guts as a B-3 but with a church cabinet and AGO-spec 32-note radiating pedal clavier instead of the B-3/C-3/A-100 flat 25-note pedal clavier. Also has a monophonic pedal solo unit, a primitive bass pedal synthesizer with pitches down into the 32-foot register (for a 16Hz low C...try it through a big sub!)
Now all ya need is a Leslie for that thing... :D
Kam, cool reed organ! I love those things, I'd love one. Where I'd put it, I've no idea...two Hammonds upstairs, bringing my other one home from Michigan soon, and inheriting my grandma's piano as well....urp! :yikes:
Todd the organ nut
Rockmonton 01-02-2005, 10:33 PM hey you might be a good person to ask then, any idea where i can get a fried tone cabinet? i'm looking into making an analog guitar amp modeller (like the new line6's, but with a lot more dynamic range) and looking at these they'd be perfect! any ideas?
B3Nut 01-03-2005, 08:02 PM Not sure...call around and ask local organ techs. BTW, I'd avoid cabs like that F-40 as they'd be a pain. they have two D-20 20-watt amps, that vintage used a quad of 6V6's. Neat amps, huge oil caps, but you'd have to make a preamp for guitar to drive both of them and build a phase inverter as the inputs of those amps is balanced. The input terminals are labeled "G-G" for grid-grid.

dr*audio 01-03-2005, 08:16 PM I have a friend who is a film collector. He has an organ like that reed organ, but fancier. Years ago he used to show the Lon Chaney Phantom of the Opera, and turn off the soundtrack and play his own accompaniment. It was alot of fun, he would just make stuff up on the fly. Sometimes other movie themes would sneak in there.
Rockmonton 01-03-2005, 08:41 PM bah a preamp and a phase inverter really is nothing to do to get a sweet looking cab, i'd call the local guys, but there really arent any around, lol. i'll watch Epay and the local buysell. thanks though!
Kamakiri 01-03-2005, 09:24 PM I've got it about 80% disassembled at this point. Impressive construction and ingenuity. The leathers seem soft still so no issues there. I'm most likely going to wire in an electric blower below so that the kids can play it without having to sit on my lap. Of course I'll hide it inside and make it easily un-doable.
Just needs a LOT of Murphy's oil soap and water cleaning. 120 years of dirt....yecch!
Sandy G 01-03-2005, 10:52 PM Kam, you're gonna KILL me, but every time I see an old pump organ, I swear, God help me-all I can think about is "The Ghost & Mr Chicken." Ban me now, I know, I deserve it...-Sandy G.
Kamakiri 01-04-2005, 07:37 AM :dunno:
Ya lost me there ;)
Sandy G 01-04-2005, 08:33 AM Ahhh, doncha remember the spooky old organ that played itself in that Don Knotts movie? It was an old pump organ, IIRC. And it played some appropiately scary music. -Sandy G.
Marlin Mackley 03-29-2005, 07:47 PM Yeah, yet another stupid Kamakiri acquisition ;)

Good early Estey, especially for free. Restored you'd get maybe $400 - $800 for it, and some wishful thinkers ask in the mid $1000 at antique malls. I have rebuilt bunches of these, if you need supplys, or replacement reeds I can fix you right up.
SPL db 03-31-2005, 09:29 AM Man! I'll bet that thing was a lot of fun getting it into the house... NOT! :D

Kamakiri 03-31-2005, 10:47 AM Only weighs about 100 lb, believe it or not. Being a reed organ there isn't the heavy piano components.

Cool! :thmbsp:
Be sure to show us pics once you get her all cleaned up!
