I just picked up a pair of Polk Audio Monitor Series 5JR speakers for $16.00 at a local thrift (see pictures). Just wondering if I should I bust open the box and check out the internals before giving them a try??? It also looks like the cabinets have been painted black...any "black" 5JRs made?? Does anyone know the vintage for these??? Thanks for your help.

I have two sets of M5JR+ series II, the main diff is mine have the SL2500 tweeters. I love them and use them as rear and side surrounds in an all Polk psudeo vintage HT system. They voice match well with the Monitor 7C's and RTA12C's Is used as center and mains. Before I mounted them in the livingroom I A/B them in the bedroom against my SDA CRS+ also by Polk. The M5JR+ damn near held their own against the 'baby SDA's'. $16 is a bargain I think I paid about $50 for each of my sets.
BTW one of my pairs are black the other is 'wood grained vinyl' or pale oak colored.

you might be able to update/upgrade those tweeters if they are to bright. call Polk audio customer service and see what they say.

I have a pair of the M5JR+ series II, had them since 1992 or 93 which I bought new, Have never had a problem with them, mine are black as that's how they came. I love them and I would only get rid of them if I was upgrading to 7's, 9's or 10's. Great speakers IMHO

I set my daughter up with a pair of +'s and I've been continually impressed with how they sound. A re-cap of my 7B's yeilded amazing results. The M5's have similar, yet fewer, components. They would likely respond similiarly. For $16 you've landed an amazing deal. Have fun.

I tend to like 2 ways with a passive and those look quality. I see no reson why they should not sound real nice. Hook them up. :thmbsp:

My 5jr have are ported instead of using a passive. Nice find.

you'll hear 'experts' moan and bitch about the too bright tweeters on the polks,
but listen for yourself. with the right amp( tubes , NAD ,HK ) afaik , the brilliance
doesn't show like it would on a hotter sounding pioneer or kenwood .
my monitor 10b sound fantastic from my Proton receiver....kenwood super-11,forget it....icepick in the ear!
