I'm just looking for opinions here. I realize each set-up is personal preference. But I'm doing an HT remodel, and am thinking about updating my receiver. My current receiver is about 4 years old - a Sherwood 9090. Very nice receiver for it's time. And it does everything well. It has DD and DTS. But it is missing the newest modes (DD-EX, Neo, DTS-ES, DPLII etc.). It also has pre-amp outputs for all channels.
So, I'm considering either (1) upgrading the receiver to get some of the newer capabilities and possibly step up to 6.1 from 5.1, or (2) keeping my current receiver and possibly adding a separate amp for the front 3 channels. I've always wanted to try a separate amp with my HT, but just have never pulled the trigger on the idea.
Any advice would be appreciated. For those who have the newest formats, are they worth it? I've read good things about DPLII. My Sherwood already has "Circle Surround" format, with various settings (Theater, Music Hall etc), so I'm not sure I'd use DPL2 much (don't use circle surround very often). Is 6.1 really that much better than 5.1?
What brands would you recommend? My budget would probably be around $500.
And if anyone has a recommendation on a good stereo or 3-channel amp that won't break the proverbial bank, I'd appreciate it.
My other info, if this helps at all:
TV - Sony 36" CRT
DVD - Panasonic RV-32
VCR - ??? honestly can't remember, and it's packed away for now
Speakers - BIC 5 speaker setup. Bookshelf speakers all around (DV62s & 52s), and they've had the Ed Frias crossover modifiaction. Sub is an 8" Sony.
Room dimensions are: 19'L, 12'W, 8'H.
Thanks.
