View Full Version : Which is MORE controversial?
Tubes vs SS? Vintage vs Modern? Objectivist vs Subjectist? Analog vs Digital? Mid-Fi vs Hi-End? Music lovers vs Techies? Cone vs Horn? To tweak or not to tweak?

Do not understand question.
Young audio men usually like tubes then mature to SOLID STATE .
Analog will always be superior to digital.
Music lovers as long as it is jazz; classic rock and a little classical rule.
Of course horns but there is room for cone.
Never tweet waste of time and money.
Mid-fi;Hi-fi as long as it is vintage.
Pretty straight forward l'm sure every one would agree with me.

To say which is more controversial is very difficult. All those issues base themselves on personal tastes and preferences. It's like getting two guys to agree on what kind of woman they prefer.
Chris
It wasn't a "poll". I was just curious if anyone had any thoughts on any of those issues. My personal opinion is that while that discussion could offer a lively debate I'm afraid that more times than not it resembles something much more precious.

I think from my very limited knowledge you musical choice dictates your gear.
You like loud rock, hard rock, metal, rockin country, hip hop, techno, dance? Then it seems obvious to me that large 3 or 4 or 5 way speakers with oodles of SS power is the way to go.
If you like more refined music such as, classical, jazz, opera, acoustic, etc. then the tubes, horns, SET etc. come into play.
Once these decisions come into play I beleive then all this source, high end CD and TT's, cables and cords stuff comes into play, perhaps a $2000 power cord and uber expensive speaker cables make a noticeable difference on SET stuff listening to the latest Diana Krall or a Mendel symphony or some jazzy selection.
But would the differences be noticeable (enough to warrant the cost) while blasting "walk this way" by aerosmith or "Sandstorm" by DaRude or "Running with the devil' by Van Halen?? Nope I don't believe so.

Thor---For hard rock, heavy metal and other types of LOUD music horns are just the ticket and FAR superior to multi-way direct-radiators.
Maybe not horns with SETs but most definately horns. It was wanting to do rock music in a realistic manner that first got me into horns over 30 years ago. You can use horns with high-powered amps you know, it was done all the time before this SET thing came along. They sold scads of Klipschorns, JBL L-200s and 300s and Altec Valencias, Barcelonas, 19s and such years ago and they weren't powered by SETs, no sir.

Tom are there any "fart boxes" you actually like?
Mike
Tom, well not all horns right? You need a woofer for the lows right? Like a cornwall is a horn high, horn mid, and a woofer, so a 3 way, I didn't mean no horns, I have a pair of Altec Lansing Model 15's and they rock out fine ;)
I would like for you to come hear my CV "Limited Edition" (so limited I have the only known pair) 4-way "fart boxes" and see if they don't rock out pretty well, they sure sound like a concert is in my living room to me :D

Thor---Oh yeah, I agree, direct-radiators work well for bass as long as they're large, high-efficiency, low distortion direct-radiators like Altec 416 and 515, EV 15B etc.

Mike---What do you mean, "fart boxes"?
Tom my CV's each have a 15" woofer, a 12" woofer two 5" mids and a tweet. The 15's are pointed at the floor, they are of a pretty unusual configuration, I don't know if you've seen them yet, if interested you can go to this thread and see em'

It's a misapplication, and instead is a lose reference for my non-horn speaker. The logic being that strapping a 93db box w/2wpc will only compress dynamics resulting in a dull, life-less sound.

Tom when I use the term "fart box" it refers to any acoustic suspension speaker. Or any speaker without a horn driver.

Mike----Oh I've liked some non-horn speakers. Many years ago I was very fond of the Freid Model H, an early sub-satellite type rig, almost bought them. I like some ESs very much, I like their clarity. I liked the old Fulton Model 80 also, a very good small box speaker. There've been a few others. But seeing as I have the room to use horns I may as well. This may all change when I retire.

why ask this question...to me...it's all about preference. You don't have to think the way I do...it's only a question of being controversial if you make it one.

ProAC,
Do you think bass-reflex designs smell worse than infinite baffle then? ;) Or maybe in terms of smell, bass-reflex are faster speakers? :)

I think a Fart Box has to be ported. Without ports I think they qualify as Poot Boxes.

All the above. Just need to phrase the comment or question right and AWAY YOU GO!

Like assesment of female pulchritude, audio too is higly subjective and sometimes passionately so.
In the end it is the victory of the ear unlike in beauty it is the eye. All specs are irrelevant.

Audiophilia is a subjective syndrome. And if you suffer from it, then the bottom line is this: If it sound like crap to you, then it IS crap - but perhaps only to you!
