View Full Version : Show us your cartridges and/or tonearms!
davidro 10-03-2010, 03:26 AM G'day all
Not sure if this has been done already but I couldn't find one so if it's a repeat the mod can kindly delete it perhaps.
As we all know, cartridge and tonearm take up big part of this vinyl hobby and we, or at least I, love their looks!
So why don't we show each other what we've got?! Here are my humble & modest parts!

reneborg 10-03-2010, 10:25 AM The tonearm is a Summiko MMT on a Sota Sapphire I was lucky enough to acquire recently for less than I could have ever dreamed of. I run this Ortofon OM-30, a Denon DL-160, and a Shure 97MXe on it.
cactuscowboy 10-03-2010, 10:57 AM Perhaps the most interesting would be a recently completed DIY oak unipivot, with a Grado Platinum Reference cartridge. This was my first attempt at building a tonearm and the results are outstanding, from a listening/sound quality standpoint.
There's a continuous run of Cardas tonearm wire from cartridge to RCA jacks. The pivot is a jewel quality stainless steel with matching sapphire vee bearing. Adjustable overhang, VTA, VTF, but no antiskate installed yet. Effective length 12". Pivot point is level with surface of record on platter. Pivot point and stylus tip are at equal distance from center of tonearm wand. The counterweight is adjustable up-down in relation to the tonearm, so I can fine-tune center of gravity.
I do plan on building more DIY unipivots and refining the design.

Since a servo motor moves the tonearm across the entire record, the PX-3 is fully automatic. For this reason, its headshell lacks a finger lift.

reneborg 10-03-2010, 11:50 PM What a bunch of great looking gear! Thanks for posting those pics!
So many turntables, tonearms, and cartridges .... so little time.
Picked up this NOS combo for $50 and I'm enjoying it on my Thorens TD-150 MkII ($10). Using an unfinished Cherry armboard for the time being.
The Syntec headshell that came with the arm (not shown) has a Shure V15 III HE on it which sounds absolutely fantastic on this combo.

Although I've got real world experience in product design and manufacturing, I lack an Engineering degree and have no formal training in physics or calculus. So a lot of this design was based on intuition and gut feeling. Getting into the process, it quickly became evident that there were many considerations: mass and distribution thereof, resonance properties of various shapes & materials used, pendulum effect, moment of inertia, center of gravity, etc.... A bit mind-boggling if one really starts thinking about.
To answer your question...
I did not calculate effective mass of the tonearm, and I'm not totally clear on how to do so. I've got a hunch it would be considered "medium" to "high" in respect to effective mass. In actual use (just over 1 week, about 80-90 LPs), the Grado Platinum sings beautifully and tracks very well. It performs far beyond my expectations and challenges any assumption that "professional design" and "cost a lot of money" are prerequisites for excellent performance in a tonearm.
The next design will also be unipivot, correcting errors made in this one and further refining performance.

Awesome shot. Amazing.
DENNYDOG 10-04-2010, 07:55 PM Thanks guys. The Stanton is on my Technics SL-110 with my diy carbon fiber straight arm. It's not completely finished yet but far enough along where I can listen to it. I had to remove the brush as I thought it sounds a lot better without it. It's got a new shibata stylus from LP gear that I'm working on breaking in.
The other pic is my PA-1000 arm on my modded PL-61. I have yet to spin a record on it but the plan is to finish it this fall.

Tell us more about the tonearm. What is it? Why the carbon fibre straight arm?
I'm also interested in that headshell... manufacturer/model?

2 What arm and what Stanton cartridge/stylus are you using on your SL110?
I have a boron as well using the standard MP11 stylus, hence my question...........

jamisue 10-06-2010, 05:56 PM Im just curious why would you have more then one tonearm on a turntable?
kcc123 10-06-2010, 07:47 PM Because it looks cute, heheh!
Cartridges do not sound the same, so are the tonearms and turntables. In fact, there is not a universal tonearm that can suit all kinds of cartridges, so in order to match a cartridge perfectly, it would be best to have different tonearms fitted on a turntable and partner the cartridge accordingly. Some cartridges like mass, the heavier, and the better they will sound. The Denon 103 and Shure M3D, for instance, love high mass arms to perform at their best. But on the other hand, high compliance cartridges like the Sonus Blue Gold, which has a compliance of 50 cu, will no doubt need a very low mass arm as a result. However sometimes synergy also plays a major role despite the cartridge compliance matches the arm mass perfectly.

Hi Balifly,
It was my own idea because I assumed that an acrylic plinth would be attractive and aesthetically very pleasing to the eyes. I had thought about using wood, MDF and slate as the material for the plinth but I finally chose acrylic which is normally easy to get cut and handled as wood and MDF will need to be painted or veneered as well. Slate is very heavy and expensive and I don’t have the special tools to do the job unless it is done by professionals.
At first, I ordered and bought a piece of 40mm thick polished acrylic from a shop, then cut the large size hole for the motor with a router, measured and drilled the small tonearm mounting holes with the help of templates which were provided and come with the tonearms when they were bought brand new many years ago.
I decoupled the whole turntable with acrylic footers at the beginning, but changed them to Audio Technica AT 605 Insulators and finally magnetic floaters at the end.
I have 20 tonearms in total and I keep swapping among them from time to time. The most frequently used tonearms are: Micro Seiki MA 505S, SAEC 308L, AT 1100. AT 1010, Grace 747, Mission 774 Original, Audiocraft AC3000 Silver Ltd, Linn Ittok and Rega 300(Incognito rewired, Michell Technoweight, Origin Live VTA adjuster) etc.
There are over 50 cartridges in my possession, including MM, MC and semi- conductor. The main ones that I normally play with are Denon 103R(aluminum body), AT 33ANV, ADC TRX-2, AT OC9, Ortofon M20FL Super, Ortofon 530 mk2, Orton MC15 mk2, Entre EC-1, Empire 2000E mk4, AT 14SA, Technics 205C mk3 and…..
KT88Lover 10-07-2010, 02:53 PM Perhaps the most interesting would be a recently completed DIY oak unipivot, with a Grado Platinum Reference cartridge.
Very nice; minimalism is a beautiful thing.

Does it use conical grinds only or are eliptical tips also available for it? Ours were only conical so we could back cue.

The Syntec headshell that came with the arm (not shown) has a Shure V15 III HE on it which sounds absolutely fantastic on this combo.

The stylus cantilever height seems to stay in place on yours. Is that only because it tracks so low? I have only seen that on a P-Mount cart 25 years ago, on my brother-in-laws Technics LT table. I track at 1.75g at the most, and yet, on my carts, the cantilever always squishes up into the crtridge body. I know that's OK, and they track fine, but I've always wondered how you can get a cantilever to maintain a nice slope like that even while playing.

Hi Jody
The cantilever has been set at 28 degrees without any mistracking at all. The cart also has a totally different, supple suspension system - the usual mono filament suspension wire has been replaced with a fine, stranded cable.

jleon92f 10-10-2010, 04:35 PM Perhaps the most interesting would be a recently completed DIY oak unipivot, with a Grado Platinum Reference cartridge.

RickB 10-11-2010, 04:24 PM Nope, it's a B&O SP 12 series...it was kind of knackered, but I found replacement styli for the thing in my collection of stuff, and you had to take the little stylus assembly out of the plastic/metal cone tip to replace it....they also sold the completed stylus assembly, and I have one, but had a couple of just the styli to stick inside the thing...talk about fiddly bits!
The one after it is an Audio Technica AT3200, the HOMC with a replaceable stylus assembly, and I have a few new elliptical and a few new conical stylus assemblies for it...

WntrMute2 10-19-2010, 05:25 AM It was suprisingly low-tech and easy. I used my hand-held Sony Cybershot point and shoot camera. Set to macro. Focused on the flat area right where the cantilever sticks out as the camera won't focus on the stylus. Its just too small. Then once the image was transfered to my computer, I enlarged it there. I used whatever program came with the computer. I think it is Microsoft Picture Viewer. You can also do it in Power Point. At some point the image breaks down but there seems to be a sweet spot.

Though you thought that the spec of the AT37E was impressive, then, what if I tell you the Technics 205C mk3 is better still, with a frequency response of 5Hz - 80 kHz. Hehe! It is not the best yet. My Technics P205 mk4 can achieve 5Hz - 100 kHz, sadly, I could hardly hear anything above 16 KHz.

I wish I had speakers that could pump that frequency range, whether I can actually hear it is another thing to worry about! I like that adjustable (right?) headshell-tonearm link. Should come handy when it comes to adjusting overhang.

That arm is a fantastic piece of art!
Love the target light on the table and the uspide down (?) platter.
Wonder how you measure what the weight and location of the counterweight needs to be.
A rare Orty but needs a stylus.
Those concordes are on nearly every DJ TT. ;)
I'd recommend an Arkiv stylus, most HiFi 'sounding' in the Ortofon DJ line ime.

Well, the simple answer is that I bought the stylus thinking it was the right one, and just mounted it. It fits perfectly. Bear in mind though (now that I've researched the whole matter of what Shure/JICO/whatever brand replacement stylus fits what Shure cart), I have the 1992 Me97HE, which I think may be different than the Era IV M97HE. Or, ignorance is bliss, I don't know. It does indeed work, and looks OK, as you see there in the pics.

I am curious....I notice a lot of you all have the stylus guards and brushes still on your cartridges. That was always the first thing I did when setting up a table was to take that stuff off and file it in the round file. It's just extra mass out there on the end of the arm and the Stanton brush...never could get next to having something loose and moving attached to a phono cart. As hard core vinyl guys I am surprised so many of you have not removed those.
Please don't misunderstand as I am not questioning anyone's judgment here as we all have our own approach to setting up our systems.
Play on.

It's easily the best cartridge I own. The dynamics are incredible, which I would guess is due to the super-light boron cantilever. This was a lucky find in a $20 CL beater SL-10. I think it would take a good investment in a new cart to out-do it.

Andy_H 03-18-2011, 09:32 AM Here's a shot of mine from a couple months ago - Grado Prestige Black1 on a stock Technics SL-1200 MkI. This has since been replaced with a Grado Reference Sonata on a Sumiko HS12 headshell, which I was lucky enough to get right before prices skyrocketed. Soon I will be changing the arm to a thedelihaus-modded MkII - very excited for that upgrade. :music:

Maybe I should broaden my horizons, on which sub-forums to hang in. :D Here's my old Shure M705EX, on the Pioneer PL-630. hakaplan told me this was a clone of the M75ED, which was pretty popular back in the 70s & 80s. It didn't look THAT dusty to me, when I took that close-up, LOL. Never fear, I cleaned it good before I mounted it up. :smoke:

Just wondering here....you guys who own nude "open generator" cartridges like a Sumiko Blackbird or Benz-Micro Glider.....are you concerned about microscopic dust particles or other airborne schmutz getting into the exposed delicate inner workings of the cartridge? Is that a problem with this type of design? To me it would seem bad enough for dust to build up on the stylus, but you can brush or clean that off. But what about when it gets into the inner workings? Does it adversely affect the sound quality? Any thoughts? Steve

Mr. Lin 04-29-2011, 09:30 AM This is an old picture of my ZYX Yatra, with a VPI headshell weight and ZYX "Silent Metal" sandwiched between cartridge and tonearm. The cartridge doesn't look like much, but take my word for it, it's amazing. The tonearm, which you can't really see in this shot, is the Pro-Ject 9c.
The nude Dynavector 10X5, which I'm using at the moment, is my avatar picture.

I have a Benz Glider M2 like the one pictured on the previous page here. Yes, dust does get on it, and no, I've never really been too concerned about it. You can gently blow on it if it's that bad.
I'm far more concerned about the stylus getting snagged on something, or the cartridge being damaged while being installed and uninstalled.

What Mr. Lin said. I've read more than one ad on A'gon where the seller is giving away one of these carts because he got too agressive with compressed air and blew out a channel. Mine plays fine with a little schmutz!

cannext 04-29-2011, 11:41 AM Regarding schmutz!
Think iron filings/dust (comes from working with metal ) and open mc carts.
Just had to clean my SPU ,the gap between the coils and the front pole plate was being bridged by some dust (audible distortion).
Removed the pole plate ,removed the dust , put it back together and No distortion.
Btw not for the faintharted .
