The Sansui AU-555 integrated amp is the heart ans soul of my system. This amp was made between 1970 and 1973. I have owned this amp since the mid '90s and ny father bought new in 1970 before he married. It has a warm sound and is amazingly powerful for the 20W mentioned on the Service manual. It has a warm involving sound - I like it more than my Marantz 2226 I once owned.

It has a all metal black face, and the knobs are made of one piece of metal, unlike other components made later - I owned a Marantz 2226, and the knobs were platic and metal.

This little integrated amp allows connection for two line level inputs, two turntables, and has a tape monitor, as well as a tape head (non amplified reel to reel if I recall correctly). IT also has pre/main connectors which allow it to serve as a preamp or power amp.

A neat feature the AU-555 has is a muting switch - you can turn the music down by 20db by flipping the switch.

As for build quality - I know the full history of this amp as it's been in my household for 32 years (more than me). It has seen the tech twice in its life (in 2000 and 2001), in 2000 the preamp blew a couple of caps and needed some major repair - it took a long time to find a competent tech, but I revived it and it works fine. In 2001 it went to the tech due to condensation problems in the output transistors, this was repaired quickly and cheap. My conclusion is pretty simple - if in 30 years no repairs were needed, it's a DAMN GOOD QUALITY AMP.

One thing I don't like much about my amp is the Speaker connectors, they are the typical connectors that don't allow thick speaker cable - thisa problem was solved using gold plated pin connectors.

Another note - this amp has multi voltage - a BIG plus; we traveled all over the world and this amp worked everywhere, all you had to do was set the voltage.

I love its sound, looks and build quality and will probably keep it forever.

I recommend it highly to anyone.

Chris

I've got an AU-666 that I'm using as a pre-amp with a couple of ASL amps. Very nice sound out of it. I've read that they have a great phono stage and sound alot like the old sansui tube stuff as this was their first line of SS gear. picked mine up for 40 CND at a thrift store down the road. mine has the wood case with black face.

That is one sweet looking amp. I am looking for something that Sansui sold in the 70's as I don't have anything made by them...yet. Thanks for the review. I will look in this direction based on it, but, I would be very fortunate to find one as nice as yours:)

I saw a AU-555A at a flea market but didn't get it. Wanted $40 for it but looked a little beat up and was missing a few knobs. Looked similar to the model pictured (but not as in as great shape!).

The AU-555A came out after my AU-555, it has a little more power and looks slightly different.

I prefer the looks of the older Sansui three digit amps than the newer ones.

Here is a AU-555A

Ckelly, I've got an AU-555 and the matching TU-555. It's a very sweet set, in great shape. The TU is almost new and the AU has just a little fading on the front-panel text. Unfortunately, to make some upgrades in my HT set-up, I think I'm going to have to part with them. What's a "fair" asking price for them? I'd like to sell them together, but if they'd bring more apart, I'd be interested in that. Thanks!

ojTHEd,
You can probably get an answer in the Sansui forum. CK lives in OZ so he can't scrounge used gear in the US like we can. I would also like to keep this thread on subject since it is a review and not just opinion.
Thanks,
David Thatcher

Hi people,

I am from Brazil, and I bought and a sansui au 555a in good conditions. Do you know the differences about the sounds between the equipment(555 and 555a)?. I would like to know which speakers you are using matching with sansui?

I was wainting a warm sounds but for me, sounded a little bright. Can be in due to the matching with my speakers. I am using with a FAR bookshelf. I tried to listen using AKG headhone and the sounds was better: clear and good to listen.

Another point: how you are using the equalization (is it term correct? ): bass, midrange and treble?

Sorry for my poor english.

Bye,

MarcosM

If you need manuals please post in the proper forums. Try Partswap first and if nothing happens then try posting a link to your partswap post in the Sansui Forum.

Good Luck.

I've got an AU-666

The Amplifier of The Beast! :yikes:

IIRC the 666 came out a few years after the 222/555/777 amps and tuners.

I still like my Au-222/TU-555. Took me forever and a day to find one of those silver fluted knobs, and when I did, the person that had it (who I didn't know from Adam) mailed it to me no charge.

A random act of kindness...

G'day CKelly, I am about to become the proud owner of an AU-555A amp. I have come full circle in the last 30 years as a kid my older sister had a system with an AU-101 I believe, from memory only one channel worked, but she didn't care. Eventually she put it out on the nature strip for hard rubbish pickup day way back when.

I used to own a Posvibes from Trevor Lees, and I am looking forward to the Sansui giving me some of that valve type warmth for my Jazz CD's. Do you run your amp as an integrated, preamp or poweramp?

Does your offer of a copy of a service manual for your AU-555 still apply? In your opinion would it cover as a manual for 555A model?
