My mother called me this morning with some bad news about one of her older brothers. Kind of a bizarre bad luck accident! Actually... it's definitely bizarre!

My uncle, now 73, has always been one to take trips to places like the mountains, Grand Canyon, Indian reservations, etc. He used to be somewhat of a "rock-hound" and would collect rocks, cut and polish them to make anything from jewelry to clocks. Also used to love hunting for Indian spear heads.

He's recently been down around South Texas on a trip by himself. Yesterday evening, he was in Harlingen, TX (near Brownsville). He had made a stop somewhere on the side of the highway. As he was walking through the parking lot from his truck, another truck that was passing by on the highway was hauling a small to medium sized trailer. One of the wheels on the trailer came disconnected and rolled at high speed towards my uncle. He never saw it coming. It was like a bowling ball picking up the spare! The wheel and tire ran over him, badly breaking one of his legs, and kinda tossed him in the air. Also ended up with some bad cuts to the head (I am assuming from his fall).

Now, he's in the hospital with a busted leg and some bleeding of the brain... although I hear the brain bleeding is not life threatening. He seems to be fine... awake and talking with no problems and in good spirits. Keeping him in ICU overnight to keep close watch on his head injuries.

When my mom woke me with this call this morning, I thought it was some kind of joke (because I was just waking up and the story was so bizarre sounding).

For you readers here in Texas... can you say... JIM ADLER??? BRIAN LONCARR??? :D :naughty:

Charlie, glad to hear he will be alright. It could have been a lot worse.

Once saw a similar accident here on the 405 Freeway. A truck tire came off a tractor-trailer and jumped the center divider and into oncoming traffic. It must have just bounced when it hit an oncoming car. Somehow it tore the hood of the car open and folded it back against the car’s windshield protecting the occupants. If it had not caught the hood the way it did, it would have gone right through the windshield. I’ll bet that driver had a load in his pants.

Yes, it seems he was very fortunate. I can just imagine his stories he'll be telling to the grandkids and great-grandkids.
