About 5 years ago (give or take a year) my TV went dead and I went to go look for a new one. I remember at the time 27" TV's were in the $400 - $500 range for your basic name brand set. I bought a magnavox and IIRC it was in that price range. A few months ago, during a storm, I must have got a surge because the TV went dead. My mother-inlaw has a TV in every room, so I brought one of hers home. After a couple of Months, the picture is getting messed up. There is a red glow around everything that I can't get rid of.
I decided it's time to buy. I went looking and was shocked to see the TV's look so much nicer and offer more features with a better picture, for much less than I paid back then. I only have room for a 27", and don't watch it enough to justify spending thousands on an LCD,plasma, HDTV...blah...blah..blah.
I had a few models in mind in the $350 price range. I talked the wife into spending an extra 50 bucks on a Sony Wega only because I have heard mention of it being a great set.
I will have it hooked up later tonight, but does anyone have anything good or bad to say about them?

Sony makes a fantastic TV and the prices for CRT's are falling like a stone. Especially if its not HDTV compatible. The only TV's I've seen with a better pic than the Sony Wega is the Proton's.

for the money i dont think you can beat the Toshiba Fx-54 cinema series. I just bought one and it is an AWSOME 27"

I guess its personal preference on a tv but i thought the toshiba had the best picture out of any of the 27"ers

Sony gets my vote for the god old fashion 27" CRT. Good purchase. Mine's going on 8 years old and it still looks great.

Only Sony's larger sets are really any good these days, they really have been slipping overall in quality....hell, some of the smaller sets don't even use real Sony CRT's, they may be Korean or (horrors) chinese!

I have a 17"ish (don't recall exactly and too lazy to get a tape measure) Wega from about 5 years ago....it was a floor model and I got it for pretty cheap. Hasn't let me down and I leave it on continuously while home. The only issue I have with it is that the Steady Sound doesn't seem to work---that was one of the features I really wanted---am so sick and tired of switching between channels only to always have to fiddle with the volume level. Oh welp. Good luck with your new toy!

While I can't say anything intelligent about recent Sony sets, I am a big fan of the 1990 era Trinitrons. My brother has a 32" and I have a 27". Both were rescues from the trash. The 32" just had the cord cut off but works great. The 27" requires external speakers but all it needed was a S6301 regulator.

The build quality on the old Sony chassis are generally high. Good quality PCBs and seperate boards for the PS, main PCB, etc. The CRTs beat the snot out of Zenith models from the same time period.
