I have to admit I have always been behind the times a bit. When everyone is out buying the newest improved plasma TV, I am still watching my 10 year old set with a single Coax input, and hooked up to a receiver running 2-channel stereo with no sub. That is until my TV went on the fritz and I picked up a Sony Wega yesterday. First I went into shock because of the picture detail and clarity. Then, I discovered a feature that has just solved a problem I have had for years. I have a garage full of vintage receivers, but have been using a cheap black plastic Kenwood for the system, only because it had a remote. I find myself turning the volume up and down a lot while watching DVD's and am too lazy to take a few steps every 10 minutes. With the new Sony, If I take the signal from the TV to the receiver, I can control the volume going to the receiver with the TV remote. When did they do this to TV's? Now, I can use my favorite Vintage receiver! Now the question.......
Since I was only familiar with the UHF/VHF coax connection, I now have the option of composite, component or s-video to hook it up. Which do I use?
I understand that component is supposed to be the best, but here is my setup:
1) Sattelite box (has s-video & composite but, no component video jacks)
2) DVD has composite, s-video, and component
3) TV has composite, s-video, and component.
4) receiver (taking the audio out from TV).

Since the sattelite doesn't have component out, would it be better to use the S-video from the Sat box to the DVD then use component from DVD to TV,
or just use S-video all around?

My 1980's RCA had line-level variable outs. A nice thing to have, indeed! I purchased a Panasonic Tau a few years ago. It has three sets of AV/S-Video in's and one variable audio out. Wish it had the ability to do component video, but alas, it does not.

Bookasan,

It is really pretty simple. Do you have any HDTV channels? Except for free air ones, most are so compressed it doesn't matter. I would hook the component from the DVD to the TV, S-video from the satellite box to the TV and take the TV sound out (from component) to the receiver (either Aux or tape in).

Component gives the best picture.

How is that for simple!!
