I've wanted a set of Carver Silver seven Reference amps since I can remember.

Not that I don't want a set of McIntosh mono's but this is the tube section. Speaking of which here is a great link for called Tube Lust (http://www.enjoythemusic.com/tubelust/tubelustpage2.htm)

Kelly, those pictures where taken late last night while listening to King's Of Convention [What was loud is now quiet] - the amp was POWERED UP! Actually, when I saw those big (5") 45 Globes I thought they would really put out some brillant light but they don't. The little input (6an4) tubes are much brighter, if much smaller. The old VAC triode amp with vintage EL34 tubes were very pretty looking with a nice blue glow. There are some meshplate 45s that have a blue or green color to them but I haven't had the pleasure. Some day...

System's look'in nice there MikE.

What is my dream amp? I'm not sure. I wish I knew more about amp design...well...ok...I wish I knew something about amp design.
Some amps I would like to listen to on my speakers(which will be bi-amped) when I get done with them. PP45, 50, PP10Y for the tops...and...Hmmm...maybe a 211 amp to try on the bottom.

Have ta wait and see what happens :)

Before I became so twisted on this SET rollercoaster I openly lusted after a VAC amp, any VAC amp. I said, "One of these days, I'm gunna get me one"... and THEN I did, and praised it often. It wasn't exactly the one I really wanted (30 / 30 or pa 60) but it was close enough.

Now that I've tasted 2a3s and 45s I'm ruined. I could never go back. Like yourself there are ALOT of tube types I've never heard; 50, 10 and 71 that all sound very interesting and right up my alley. Unlike my early lustings, let me say if that happens fine, if not I'll survive.

Whew! After thinking about this and thinking about this, I really got stumped. I just couldn't pick. The guys here posted a couple of things I lust for. Imagine it would have to ultimately be some form of SE configuration though. A couple of really good manufactures of that type of amp out there. Mike has a very good example of that. :)

Wher did you get a black face 10R? 1st I've ever seen and there were none listed in the Marantz listings during the era. I saw the back edge from the chassis shot and it looks like the same anodized color as every one I've seen. Also, I don't recall the handles on the 10R, though this may be a lapse of memory but, the handles on the photo loook strangely like the handles used on the later ARC D76a amps I owned.

Someday when my friend gets around to designing it and we (he does the work, I listen) work the bugs out of the proto types I am going to build a pair of mono blocks with a 6Y6GT driving a 6Y6G with stepped attenuators for volume and feedback.

David,

I understand using a 6Y6 as the final, but why one as the driver??? Did you just buy a box of 100 of them N.O.S?
Why not 1/2 of a 6SN7? Is it because the 6SN7 doesn't come in a cokebottle shape?

Why monoblocs? This is such a small project (in size, not a judgement on its merit), both amps and power suppies(s) could easily fit on a single practical sized chassis.

Auctually the driver is a 6J5 which I think is half a 6SN7 and then a 6Y6GT driving a 6Y6G. I am not sure why the extra 6Y6 but with the low voltages I guess it takes an extra boost for the watts. Dennis hasn't shown me a schematic yet but with the 6J5 being by far the most expensive tube in the amp at around $35 it will be affordable. I have never heard a 6Y6 but I have listened for many hours to other amps he has designed and built and if he says it will be great I am willing to go for it. I have been doing some real scrounging to get some stuff for ebay which Dennis sells for a commission, and I have been letting him keep the $$ for his cash flow in the expectation of getting to build mine for less than retail. Not a bad deal for both of us.
Rob, the reason for the mono blocks is that they have their own power supplies so less noise, with gain control you connect directly to the source, so basically you can put the disc in the center, the blocks spaced out to the sides and use shorter lengths of cable to the speakers. Point to point wiring, SE circuitry, minimum of cabling and no preamp. Super simple. With the high Q of some of the new high efficiancy drivers the goal is a TL 2 way with only a 6db high pass for a crossover. K.I.S.S. all the way. The best bang for the buck system for the purist. Can you imagine a TOTL complete system for $3K ? Not counting your source and if your into vinyl, a phono stage.
Back to the 6J5/6Y6GT/6Y6G the only thing I can really make a comparision to is an amp I saw or heard about that had a 6SN7/45/845. The idea was to get the 45 sound with the power of the 845. I can get that concept. The 6Y6 thing has me a bit baffled but I can really get into the idea of great sound at low price.
