Been a while since we dumped the VHS player from the audio rack. So now we are thinking that we need a way to record shows when we are gone for later playback.
In comes a DVD recorder. Hmmmm which one? Thinking about one with a HD in it but shoot, who needs a hard drive if one is recording with DVD Ram? What do you have? Any issues or problems? :scratch2:

If you want to record on Dvd ram, go with panasonic. Dvd recorders can be EXTREMELY difficult to use, that is my only problem. I have gone through all of them and checked them all out and if i was getting one it would be the panasonic, for HD or non HD. pioneer would be close second, but it was just a bit harder to use.
Also the ins and outs are just weird on them, no component in so you have to use s video which is a bugger if you run component to your tv, your always switching the output on the device from component to s vid in the menu everytime you want to record. Sometimes you get lucky and the dvd player or cable box sends out colour stream and s vid at the same time so you dont have to go into the menu and change it.

If you just want to do basic recording and not use the set-top DVD recorder to edit out commercials and such, a model without the hard drive is probably all you need. Of those, the DVD-RAM models are the ones you want, both for disk capacity and longevity. There are some great deals on the Panasonic E55 right now, since the E85 and E95 hard disk models hit the market.
If you do want to edit and archive to DVD-R, opt for the hard disk model. As for issues or problems, try to narrow down your selection to two or three recorders, then search the AVS Forums subforum on DVD recorders. Most of the popular machines have been mentioned there.

As a matter of fact, I had stuck my nose in over at AVS. Should look a bit harder now though. Thanks for the input!! :thmbsp:
