View Full Version : New tube amp!!!
Check out this amp I horse traded for. It is a Garnet BTO 400 rated at 120 watts rms and 180 peak. Uses four EL34's for the output, and has a stinger (fuzz) control. The stinger section emits noise (tube rush) noise, but otherwise the amp has balls. I already blew up a junker alnico driver testing it at 1/4 volume :D Pic1 (http://members.shaw.ca/mbeka/Garnet1.jpg)

those are pretty sweet little amps! i nearly got in a fight with the original designer at a pawn shop in winnepeg once, heh but those are really nice little (big) amps, hope you got it cheap! they're awesome!
How's $200.00 Canadian sound? A fella owed me a couple hundred bucks for a pair of speakers I gave em' and he gave me the amp in trade. :naughty: Now all I need is a speaker that can take some jam and I'm off.

now thats a pretty decent deal! too bad it didnt have the nice cab with it, i think those original cabs had these two cool little horns at the top!
I have a Garnet cab with two 12" drivers in it. It's stored in the garage, but I'll be digging it out later.

eek, thats for a rebel or something it'd take 40-50 watts MAX! heh. if you were closer i could get you a peavey 6x12" cab with a horn in it too for real cheap since i only want the head but have to buy both to get it!
6X12 :naughty: Yowzass!!! Imagine the air you could move. I'm not a loud fanatic, and probably will use a pedal or two for full effect on the amp (too much jam to overdrive).

haha yeah, its the same kind of rig used to do the solo in freebird, but i've still gotta pay for it. any kind of cab will make that thing MEGA loud. hell my 18 watt marshall clone is MEGA loud my fender brown is loud enough to kill most drummers! all you need is a couple of efficient speakers and about 20 watts to kill most people. heck, if you ever wanna get rid of it, gimme a call! but thats a seriously nice trade!
Well if I do move it on, I'd only trade for another amp :naughty: It does have a little more headroom than I need :)

yeah, i've been trying to get this old garnet/piper combo amp thats PP 6v6 and pushes a LOT of volume, plus its got reverb, i'll see how that goes, or make you one if you ever decide, then you could be the 3'rd or 4'th owner of a "Rocky" amp. heh but nice find i do say!
I put the Garnet on the Garnet e-group and got a lot of offers. Lil' Rock, Reverb Head, Pro200 Vocal PA head for starters. Any opinions on these?

well the Lil' Rock is nice, and the pro200 is fairly smilar to what you have, the vocal head is nice, but not for guitar. heck an old traynor guitarmate would be IDEAL for you, or a marshall 18 watter.
Well I've just been offered a pro bass and a session man head and cab. The session man is white probably made in mid seventies as it was the disco era and the pro bass is vintage 60's.

session mans sound similar to silverface fenders, and i've never played a pro bass, but its prolly pretty big as most of the Pro amps from them were.
Well I got pics of the Pro and one thing concerns me is that the power tranny is a grey colored one as opposed to the standard black ones used? Also has another inline fuse off of the power tranny b+ maybe to protect outputs and iron if tube blows? Doesn't seem stock so I might just keep the BTO until a better deal pops up.

yeah, like i said i'll make you a nice 18 watter combo one day, and if i get that other amp, i'll trade that and a bit of cash or whatnot, depends what you're looking for.
Got any pics of your amp?

my combo chassis should be completed next week! i'll post some pictures as soon as i tolex it up, or cover it in tweed.
Whats the tube compliment, circuit modelled from ie: champ, twin?

well this one (my own) will be a cost-no-object 2-15" combo based on a marshall plexi, and the one i could do up for you would be similar to the marshall 18 watt combo with PP el84, with up to 6 preamp tubes (if we can figure out something to use 6 preamp tubes!) and the other combo amp i might be getting (the garnet) is a PP 6v6 with i think two preamp tubes, and its got reverb.
Well I won't commit to anything until I see yours. You've perked my interest. I've been offered another 18 watt copy using 6V6's (to give a little more meat on the bottem), two 12AX7's, hammond power tranny, weber choke, Hibor? output tranny and weber speaker. Relay switches, lug boards, and illinois caps. Its tolexed in black, blond or tweed, and comes with two channels clean and overdrive with one input and two volumes and a gain for crunch. Uses baltic birch for a cab.
Lets see what you can create for me. If you can better I might be interested. I would prefer point to point. I also like the tone of a 6V6 (never grew accustomed to a 6BQ5 although maybe voiced right it might sound nice). 8 12AX7's ?? Now thats a preamp.
Let me know when your is built and post me a pic. I want an amp i can play at home with a wife a 2 year old, but also something I can crank at a small gig.

haha yeah, the el84 one is a pretty crazy little thing from an old all in one TT, but its pretty high tech, i could throw it in this old gibson combo cab i have sitting around that doing nothing, 18-20 watts is more than enough for most coffee shops, i've been jamming around on my brown deluxe, and i'll use it at a big jam with my 4-12 and not be allowed to turn it upas 6 without murdering a drummer, that one you have sounds really nice! that other 18 watt copy is probably something similar to the one with reverb i know of, but hey just give me some ideas, i dont need you to commit or anything, i'm still just a tinkerer and theres a guy at a music shop here who'll take just about anything i make, even the total frankensteins, so gimme some clues as to what you'd want and what style you play, and i'll see what i can come up with!

tomorrow, i'll be out in the garage, as for tonight, i've got a social AP midterm tomorrow morning, so i better hit the sack because i've got a lunchtime football practise right after, but tomorrow evening i should send some pics of the old gibson chassis!
No hurries, just interested in seeing your work, ie: chassis layout ect. I'm working on a 6SN7 preamp right now.

ahh, chassis layout, i have a traynor i rebuilt in pieces on turretboard, but i think i'm going to opt more for breadboard now, and soon if i can create a fairly original design, a PCB as i can get them run off fairly cheaply in town here, similar to matamps with the power supply running down the middle an all the components branching off it, nice and smooth.
When you have something built shoot me a pic. I'm not doing anything with the BTO immediately. I'm looking for a 12-20 watter with some variation in tones, maybe two channel (clean/overdrive) to play with. I prefer 6V6's for output, 12AX7's for preamp and gain, reverb is nice but not neccessary, tremolo I'm not really into. I play blues and rock. I prefer 12" drivers and well thats what I'm after....since you asked :naughty:
I'd build one myself but I'm two months into my preamp and I've just mounted hardware and built the cab.....too busy :)
