Folks

I decided to give myself a nice christmas present for me - a DVD. I will use it to play music, and not watch movies.

This unit will be used to replace my POS CD changer. I decided to get a DVD because they look nice with the silver faces, and will read practically anything you feed it (CD, CDR, MP3, DVD).

What cheap models are nice?

I have been considering these:

Sony DVP-NS315
Pioneer DVD-355
Panasonic DV-RV32 (which is the one I'm leaning more towards)

I was also looking into philips.

Any ideas?

Chris

Hi Chris,

I'm not sure how flexible your budget is but as you are also in Zone 4 like NZ, take a look at the Pioneer DV-S655A.

For the money it is simply amazing !

Plays all the formats you want plus DVD-A and SACD.

If you ever do want to play movies, it has a good progressive scan video output (along with every type of connector you need except SCART but they are crap so it doesn't matter) and has built in DD/DTS decoders so you don't need a separate processor.

Oh rats ...the 655 only appears to be available in black

:(

A similar model , the 656 is in silver but the feature set differs depending on which side of the Atlantic you buy it from.

The Euro version does DVD-A/SACD but no prog. scan video.
The US version does do prog. scan but doesn't play SACD's.

cheers

PS ..if the video side doesn't appeal, have you considered another CD player ? Most DVD players will not provide you with CD performance as good as a simarly priced CD player.
The NAD C521i and C541i are particularly good.

I havent ruled out anything, I might also get a nice CDP, I still have to check out what's available.

All it has to do is play CD's and CDR's nicely, and look nice ;)

Hey CK;

The Panny RP 82 is the way to go. I got mine a couple months ago and it is as good as the 91 (retail over 600.00) except one feature. This player is hot, hot, hot and currently they can't keep up production so you may have trouble getting it at first. BUT, at 200.00 bucks I don't think anything out there can beat it. Check into some other forums like AVS etc about this machine. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/ Mine is beautiful with it's chrome looking face and gawd, does it stomp the do do out of my old CD player when playing music.

Anything that has the words PORN or XXX in the title ;) Just be sure the words MAN, MALE, or GAY aren't in the title also :D

i recommend one of the sonys that will do all three. i grabbged a ns500v for $161 delivered and the cd part sounds XLNT!
that was a verrrry pleasant surprise in that im a vinylite and now my CDs sound much better. the sacd inventory is growing and likewise the dvd pile.
i still zoom down to amoeba in hollywood and grab used CDs, and over to record surplus for my vinyl needs. i LOVE los angeles.

:grnbounce Hey Tommy:beer:

Nice to see another AR regular here. Haven't been able to talk the wife or son into taking me over to TEAC.........some day.:bigok:

My son hits Amoeba Records a coupla times a month. Loves the place! He never comes back empty handed. 'Nother place I'd like to visit. I want to start a new vynil collection and get my TT out of mopthballs. Much of the old jazz just doesn't seem to sound as good on CD. Could be nostalgia. If nothing else, I can always make a list of titles and have him look for them:thumbsdn:

My $.02 on this discussion, I bought the Panasonic DVD-CV52P for, well, below retail and for the price, it's great. Plays almost any type of disc. At get togethers, I load a few MP3 discs, hit random, and have uninterrupted background music for hours. The 52 only comes in blackm but I believe the next model up comes in silver, too.:dunno: I believe the specs on the 32 are similar to mine, but it's not a changer.

Good luck in your search, Chris and good to dee you Tommy

Happy Listening

i live in sylmar, what about you? another spot i like is record surplus on pico in w.LA near barrington. upstairs is LOTS of $1 records.
its not nostalgia that makes the vinyl sound better, it just SOUNDS better. more satisfying and relaxing. ive told this to people who came back to me months later confirming what i said.
which table and cart do you have? get the thing out and start enjoying.
about the teac trip,,,,dont you drive? hey, maybe they will mail it to you (you were after a pinch roller, right?), that would be nice.
maybe someday we can hook up at rec surp or something.

ckelly- hope you're enjoying your new surroundings.

If you were stateside, I would highly recommend either of the following versatile players:

Sony NS-755- DVD, SACD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW. Mine has great video AND music playback. Will not play MP3s, however

Pioneer DV-563- all the above formats, plus DVD-A and MP3s. Very good video, haven't used all the audio formats but plays all my CD-Rs and my son's MP3s. So far seems audio is good, but since it resides in my home theater I haven't critically listened and cannot give a strong input.

Sony is black, Pioneer is silver, both slim units, both quite decent looking. If these or equivalent versions are available in your area, check them out....Ray

I am currently using a Rotel RDV-1080 DVD - plays DVD-A, CD's, but to cover their asses it doesn't play any home recorded CD's. It doesn't play SACD's.

This player has been listed as a player for people who listen to music and want a DVD player.
