View Full Version : My 9090 sounds good!

Earlier I had reported that my Sansui 9090 sounded horrible on my large full range front horns, so bad that I couldn't listen to it yet my 20w/ch P-P UL 6CA7 tube amp sounded terrific!

I have completed the design and construction of another set of large, full range speakers which are not based on conventional horn loading and have discovered to my delight that the Sansui really likes these new speakers. On FM that receiver rocks! :boink: I still cannot say I'm impressed with the sound from the phono stage however.

It is amazing how different components like amps and speakers really need to be matched for synergistic performance.

QUOTE: "It is amazing how different components like amps and speakers really need to be matched for synergistic performance."

That is EXACTLY the point so many seem to miss!

Although the combinations are endless... They can be easily found sometimes by simply asking the right questions to the ones who have already gone through this or If you're rich... By experimening until you hit that winning jackpot.

I prefer option 1, although I found my winning combination by auditioning tons of speakers at my favorite audiophile shop.

The winning combination for my 9090DB? The Dahlquist DQM9c's. A match made in audio heaven & built by the German's like a Sherman Tank.

I use my Sansui's with these and to say the least, I am quite pleased with the results :)

Sigh...., why does something so simple have to be so complicated? I thought after I posted, you could just click on the link and see the attached photo. Oh well.., I'll give it a try another time.

What do they say about first impressions? Well. last night I got around to hooking up a separate analog tuner (Hitachi FT-920), through my home brew preamp and 6CA7 UL P-P amp and gave the sound of this combo on the new speakers a good comparison to the stand alone 9090 tuning FM off the same antenna to the new speakers. While the big horns could not tolerate the 9090 at all, and the new speakers seem to work very well on it, there was still a very low level distortion in the sound that I could also hear earlier when the 9090 was used on the horns. With the tube amp and Hitachi tuner this distortion completely disappears and the sound is pure as it should be.

From my present working equipment inventory, If I were to have a party and needed loud music the 9090 would be my choice. For serious listening and fine detail speaker evaluation, the tube amp is the only suitable choice.

I sure would like to know if my 9090 has degraded below spec, or if the distortion I hear is inherent to its design. I'm sure most people wouldn't hear it, but us here with trained ears are much harder to please eh!? :)

Rob:

Its possible that at 25+ years old, there might be some components in the tuner section that could need replacing and thus clear up any of the distortion you might be hearing. And/or perhaps just some kind of alignment. From what I recall reading in reviews, and for the 7070 too, the Tuner sections in these models are well above average in quality.

Beatlefred,

It isn't just on FM. The Sansui actually sounded worse on mag phono. The same Stanton 681EEE cartridge sounds great on my homebrew preamp. The source of the distortion has to be in the audio sections of the Sansui. You are right in that it might be component degradation. It sure has nice big power and is a fine looking, apparently well built receiver.

I havent had the chance to set up my turntable again (vintage Technics SL-D2) to hear how it sounds thru my 9090DB. I would think the phono section of the Sansui is of high quality, as that was the primary medium back then, obviously no cd players at that time as we use now thru the Aux input. Maybe for some reason the cartridge you have doesnt match up well with the receiver. Just a guess. If I find any info in any mag reviews I have that might mention the Sansui's phono section, I'll let you know.

I wonder, if Jimi were around a few years longer and had a 9090DB, would he set it ablaze as he was fond of doing to his Strats (atleast at Monterey he was) :)

mOOn: did you hear that Zal from the Lovin Spoonful recently passed? (and Joe Strummer/ex-Clash too)

Kosmic KOAS & Happy Holidays,

B/F (ps- "There's No Way Out of Here" is very cool!, I was listening to it earlier)

Hey Beat! Merry Ho Ho. Well as a Jimi fanatic I can clue you in on the burnt strats. There was only 2.

One at Monterey Pop Festival. (It was an offering to the god's. Watch the video)

One at The Miami Pop Festival (In possession of the Frank Zappa estate for some time now)

Heard about Zal. He was always fun to watch. Always looked like he was having the time of his life. Sorry to see him go. As for my version of "No Way Out"... Glad you like it. That was my big singing debut. The vocals were easy. The rest was a pain in the butt to complete. I was never very happy with it, but that's another story.

Take care, Moon

ps... Still have those CD's for you. SOMEDAY I'll get them sent!!!

Try replacing the electrolytic capacitors in the amplifier and pre amplifier section. I did on my power amp and pre amp and it made a great difference. I'm using JBL 2425's for the top end and the sound is amazingly lifelike.
