Well, it looks like I may be shopping for a new used car for the wife. Since I'm somewhat of a cheapskate, I'm looking for something that's nice and reliable and I can rack up a ton of miles (250,000 or more) on. I'm looking at spending up to about $10,000 and I'm thinking I can get a 3-5 year old Camry or Accord for that price. I've had domestic cars forever, but want one now that I can really rack some miles up on and none of the homeys have been able to crack 190,000 so far. I'm looking for a V-6, automatic, 4 door sedan (wife has knee problems; no clutch for her), so if anyone has any experience with them, I'd appreciate it.

Methinks Kam just may have a bit of knowledge here

For a 6 cylinder I would lean towards the Accord. The Camry's seem to not get enough air circulation in the engine compartment and bake the seals at 90k or so. The Hondas do a lot better. Both great cars though and nobody in the auto industry stands behind their cars better than Toyota bar none.

Either the Accord or Camry is an excellent choice..... you won't be disappointed.

Also, don't underestimate the 4-cylinder models.... they have plenty of spunk!

I personally prefer the Honda...

I've owned both and think they're both fine cars. The Camry has a softer ride and more of a family car. The Accord handles better and has more power. The drive train of the Honda IMHO is better than that of the Camry. I previously had a Honda that I drove until 230K without any major work on the motor or transmission.

Go for whichever you can get a better deal on, they're about equally good cars. I agree, of you want something with more pep I'd go for the Accord, but don't underestimate the capabilities of the Camry either. Toyotas also seem to have better quality bodies on 'em as far as long-term endurance, but with the age of the cars you're gonna be looking at it'll be a good 10 years before you have rust issues anyway, so it's kind of a moot point.

I too have owned both, and you can't really go wrong with either. I personally prefer the Toyota. But I've also owned Nissans, and have been pleased. I wouldn't rule out a similar model Maxima or Altima (although I'm not sure the Altima is a six banger).

You can get 6cyl Altimas, but only in the past year or two's models. Nissans also tend to command a higher price for what you get, at least around here. Whether it's worth it is up to the buyer I guess. One thing I do like about the Nissans, especially the Maximas, is that they will haul some serious ass...

As they say, "Ask the man who owns one!"

Check out www.driveaccord.net , you may find some familiar names there :)

I will have to vote for the camry but as sort of an absentee voter. My father owns one and it is due for the second timing belt replacement(preventative) He was a state trooper with a 440 dodge, later a 65 goat tri power 389 and a euro version V-8 benz and calls the camry a rocketship. For those in the know it still can and will do 120 up to Eisenhower tunnel at 200k.

So did you ever make a purchase for a new Honda Accord? Did you get a chance to hop over to DriveAccord.net (http://driveaccord.net) and get information from the Honda Accord owners ?

I actually cheaped out and got a 2002 Taurus SEL loaded with 49K on it for the price of a 1997 Accord with 120,000 miles on it.
We liked the Accords, but I didn't want to pop over $10,000 and Cindy wanted something nicer and newer. We've owned 3 other Tauri and they all ran well and long. My 1997 daily driver has 150,000 miles on it and runs like a rabbit, so I'm confident the 2002 will be around awhile.
I did check out the links and read lots of great reviews, but the bottom line was that the Hondas hold their price and demand a premium in the market, especially 6 bangers. Maybe the next time we need a ride I'll get a lesser one; Cindy's pickier on cars than I am.

I’ve owned my fair share of Hondas and didn’t mind them one bit. From the CVCC in 1978 to my last one which was an Accord.
Since then my tastes have changed and I’ve been a Saab guy for 10+ years now.

I've owned three Hondas and one Toyota, although not a Camry, and my mom currently owns (based on my recommendation) an Accord.

You absolutely, positively can't go wrong with either one. Both outstanding cars from great companies. I'd also toss in that you should get some opinions on the two dealerships in town. Since they're both good cars, if one dealership has a great reputation, and the other not-so-good, that might carry a lot of weight for your decision.
