View Full Version : Best Songs About Cars/Motorcycles
Photobitstream 03-30-2005, 05:54 AM I put together an iTunes playlist a few years ago with the theme being cars/motorcycles. The playlist had to fit on one CD because I was on the road a lot and couldn't stand listening to California radio stations unless I could pick up the Phil Hendrie Show, but I digress. Freed from that constraint, I welcome suggestions for more great songs about cars/bikes. We'll save road trip songs for another thread.

A couple of folks have mentioned Arlo's Motorcycle Song I think that it is probably the best.

What a great post! I'd have to agree that "455" by Kathy Mattea would be a great addition. One of the best car songs ever, and by a girl, no less! One I didn't see (you're right, this thread got waaay off track!) is one I remember my dad playing: "The Terror of Highway 101". "He wore black denim trousers and motorcycle boots, and a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back...he had a hopped-up cycle (pronounced "sickle") that took off like a gun, that foooooooool was the terror of highway 101".
I'm amazed at how many I've never heard, or at least I just don't remember.
Put me on the list for a copy of the cd! :D
Clay

Photobitstream 03-31-2005, 09:49 AM Lots of great suggestions here. I've even found stuff in my collection that I had forgotten about. Just ran across "Whose Cadillac is That?" by War on my hard drive searching for Long White Cadillac. Keep 'em coming.
This playlist is now almost two hours long, without acquiring the suggestions I don't have in my collection. Won't fit on a CD unless you have iTunes and use the AAC encoded files and the Apple Lossless files. Then there is that pesky matter of copyright law.
Timothy Leary 03-31-2005, 10:00 AM How about "Pink Cadillac"? Done by Natalie Cole or The Boss, take your pick.
mhardy6647 03-31-2005, 10:00 AM Has anyone mentioned Queen's "I'm in Love with My Car"?
Sandy G 03-31-2005, 11:27 AM A couple more from the CB craze-era- "18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses"-Kathy Mattea, "White Knight" & "Kentucky Moonrunner" by Cledus Maggard & the Citizen's Band. Cledus...gotta LUV that name...-Sandy G.
Fisherdude 03-31-2005, 11:50 AM ...Then there is that pesky matter of copyright law.
Dang. Keep forgettin' about that. :worried:
Justen 03-31-2005, 12:02 PM How about "The Ballad of Thunder Road" or the song about the little Nash Rambler.."beep, beep, his horn went beep beep beep"?

foetusized 03-31-2005, 12:10 PM the song about the little Nash Rambler.."beep, beep, his horn went beep beep beep"?"Beep Beep" by The Playmates. Dr. Demento used to play that one (back when I could get his show) -- Foe

Photobitstream 03-31-2005, 06:34 PM A couple of dubious ones-I don't even really know the names-but I SWEAR I've heard 'em-"Have You Heard The Word of the Lord/Jesus might be comin' in a '49 Ford."
At the risk or derailing my own thread, everyone knows Jesus drove a Honda. It says right there in the book of Acts that Jesus and the Apostles traveled in one Accord.
Road Runner - Bo Diddley and the Pretty Things cover
Little Honda - the Queers cover
RichPA 03-31-2005, 07:13 PM Guys, we're getting away from songs about cars/bikes into songs about being on the road. Nothing wrong with that, but it's a different playlist.
True, but since we are ... how about "Diesel on my tail?" Favorite line: "Can this compact take the impact?"
Sandy G 03-31-2005, 07:57 PM An' that one from '80-81, "Sausalito Summerlight" by a band named Diesel. The OTHER Golden Earring hit from '83, "Twilight Zone", has always been a GREAT driving song, IMHO. -Sandy G.
TVTeufel 03-31-2005, 11:42 PM [QUOTE=Justen]How about "The Ballad of Thunder Road" ?
Yeah - from the '59? movie "Thunder Road", kinda' "sung" by one of my favorite actors of all time, Robert Mitchum.

Aaaah - you beat me to it!
Sammy can write some great motor tunes!!!!!
Tower Boss 04-20-2009, 11:06 PM I know this song was mentioned 4 years ago in thread, but since it was just revived, I thought the ’79 classic Driver’s Seat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRa8EZ6DQPY&feature=related) by Sniff 'n' the Tears was deserving of a reprisal also. Fitting since it was reissued in ’91 and the video I linked to was mixed with original video and footage from a performance last October.
Bob Clobber 04-20-2009, 11:24 PM Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenston, also nicely covered by Bernard Allison.
The first rock and roll song ever.

Sansui Louie 04-21-2009, 04:50 PM My fave would have to be the David Lindley version of "Mercury Blues". Steve Miller's is pretty good, too. The rest...especially the shitkicker versions, no way.
Commander Cody's "Hot Rod Lincoln" gets honorable mention, as does "One Piece At A Time" by Johnny Cash. I'll also add ZZ Top's "She Loves My Automobile" and the "Made In Japan" version of "Highway Star". Anyone who says "Mustang Sally" should be hung by their thumbs. :D

rockin1150 04-21-2009, 05:36 PM "Wheels of Fire" by Judas Priest from the Angel of Retribution album. My fave.
Born on the other side, of the track
Gotta get outta here, I won't look back
Born on the other side, wild as a hurricane
Living in overdrive...
Wheels of fire, in my soul
Wheels of fire, wheels of fire - let 'em roll
Too fast to give a damn, stand my ground
No one or anything, can tie me down
Born on the other side, wild as a hurricane
Living in overdrive...
Wheels of fire, in my soul
Wheels of fire, wheels of fire - let 'em roll
Ride to live, live to ride
Wheels of fire, forever
[solo]
Born on the other side, wild as a hurricane
Living in overdrive...
Wheels of fire, in my soul
Wheels of fire, wheels of fire - let 'em roll
Wheels of fire
Wheels of fire

RT Fan 04-24-2009, 09:35 AM Tapehead47, great call on U.S.S. Zydecoldsmobile by Sonny Landreth, an amazing guitarist. I thought I would get to post that one!
Check out the Jimmy Buffett version from his cd "Far Side of the World" a really well recorded album with Sonny ripping it up on his track with Jimmy singing vocals. It trumps Sonny's own version. Sonny has been playing with JB the last few years and adds a tremendous amount of depth to his live shows. He also is the featured player on both the "Far Side.." and "License to Chill" cds. Sonny Landreth is a gifted guitarist who flies under the radar but is one of the best players in the country today.

Ron Pilgrim 04-27-2009, 04:58 AM Chicks and Cars by Colin James comes to immediate mind(my wife once said during a vacation drive that if I didn't knock off my aggressive passing while this song was playing that she would fire the cd out the window like a frisbee), Turbo Lover-Judas Priest, both Twilight Zone and Radar Love by Golden Earring, I can't Drive 55 by Sammy Hagar and for reasons that I cannot explain(except that the beat gets my driving enthusiasm up), LA Woman.
