View Full Version : Great Obscure Girl Groups
Rock-Ola 04-04-2005, 10:12 AM Of course everyone's knows the Supremes, Shirelles, and such but how about the ones that didn't make the big time. A couple to get you thinking and looking are the Rag Dolls who had a song called "Dusty", the Raindrops, the Pleasure Seekers (early Suze Quatro), and the Cookies. Also has anyone every found a bad 45rpm on the Red Bird label? Although most weren't big sellers, all that I've found are great, even if I never heard the artist or song.
Sandy G 04-04-2005, 10:26 AM The Jaynetts- "Sally Go 'Round the Roses", 1963/64. What was it? A children's nursery rhyme? A gal catching her man w/another girl? Or, A Grrrrl catching her Grrrrl w/another Grrrrl? In any case, a pretty, odd, hypnotic song...-Sandy G.
Chip - HP 04-04-2005, 10:29 AM The Blossoms (http://history-of-rock.com/blossoms.htm) ... which at one time included Darlene Love ...
I loved that old Jaynettes song. Like Sandy said, odd and hypnotic! Another good one was The Mermaids "You Don't Have To Be A Baby To Cry".
Rock-Ola 04-04-2005, 10:53 AM Yup, the Jaynetts and the Mermaids were just the type of obscure songs I was thinking of. I just thought of a couple more; the Dixie Cups "You shoulda seen the way he looked at me", the Paris Sisters "Be my Boy", and the Poni-Tails "Born Too Late". I know there are many more so keep 'em comin'.
Photobitstream 04-04-2005, 11:15 AM Two Nice Girls. They recorded one CD in 1990, "Like a Version," which is so rare even Gretchen Phillips, who was in the group, asked me to burn her a copy.
Gypsy Cowgirls, although they won't be obscure much longer. http://www.gypsycowgirls.com/
Four Bitchin' Babes. The lineup varies according to pregnancies and touring schedules, but they always feature wry humor. http://www.fourbitchinbabes.com
Sandy G 04-04-2005, 11:22 AM An' then there was Linda Scott, a 16-yr old w/a hit in '61, "Every Little Star". Diane Renay (Kushner) w/"Navy Blue" from '64, "Popscicles, Icecles", by the Murmaids, '63...Dammittall, I know I can think of more...Oh, yeah, "Pink Shoelaces" By 13-yr-old Dodie Stevens, 1959-Sandy G.
Sandy G 04-04-2005, 11:25 AM What was that DREADFUL song a few years ago by some outfit called "4 Non-Blondes"? Some gal was screaming-basically out of tune-the whole song. Jeez, Louise....-Sandy G.
Chip - HP 04-04-2005, 11:42 AM ... Another good one was The Mermaids "You Don't Have To Be A Baby To Cry".
Love the Mermaids but haven't heard their version of YDHTBABTC ... The Caravelles ... a British Pop duo ... had the hit version (#3) in late '63 ... just before The Beatles came on the U.S. scene ...
mg196 04-04-2005, 12:01 PM Not many people know that Color Me Badd was a girl group...an UGLY girl group at that.
foetusized 04-04-2005, 01:32 PM Two Nice Girls. They recorded one CD in 1990, "Like a Version," which is so rare even Gretchen Phillips, who was in the group, asked me to burn her a copy.We used to have a copy of their "Spent My Last $10 on Birth Control and Beer" at the college radio station I worked at. For several months it was played every night at midnight, after the FCC rules for indecency were relaxed (the time may have actually been at 11PM, but we had the "Magnetic Record Shop," an album aired in its entirety, at that time). Great song -- Foe
heathkit tv 04-04-2005, 01:53 PM There were a couple of unreleased recordings that a NYC radio aired very late one night back in the early 80's from a girl band called the Android Sisters (a goof on the Andrews Sisters for you younguns who don't know).
They sand in a sort of robotic tone and were hilarious. Sure wish I could dig up these recordings. One of them had something to do with two disembodied noses...a big one and a small one. Each of which slithered across the room and finally up someone's body. When they got to the armpits they went "sniff sniff" and declared "YOU STINK!"
Guess you had to be there.
Anthony
2DualsNotEnough 04-04-2005, 02:16 PM I like what Ive heard from the 5,6,7,8's,a Japanese girl group that was featured in the movie Kill Bill, and now in a commercial thats shown every 12 seconds on cable.

You reminded me of one of my all time fave girl groups. The New York Dolls.
Love the Mermaids but haven't heard their version of YDHTBABTC ... The Caravelles ... a British Pop duo ... had the hit version (#3) in late '63 ... just before The Beatles came on the U.S. scene ...
You are quite right. My memory is slipping. I got The Caravelles and Murmaids mixed up.
The Marine Girls!
'was the 1st group of Everything But The Girl's singer.
I had two LPs of them, lost one through the years. Cherry Red Records in the UK (for those not too young :)) when CR was really burgeoning with great stuff, c. 1982/84. Marine Girls... almost pathetic and, perhaps not strangely, very charming because of that.
Another one: "Humpe Humpe", german duet of (very) german (teutonic) gals singing in (perfect) english. 1985 - mostly crappy overproduced stuff but one true melodic gem called Happiness.
Here's another one. Teenage angst doesn't get any better than this!
The Shangri-La's "I Can Never Go Home Anymore". :thmbsp:

Or...Shangri-La's - "Walkin' in the Rain" (Remember). :thmbsp:
Same era - Reparata & the Delrons.
Earlier - Patience & Prudence.
Ron.
Or...Shangri-La's - "Walkin' in the Rain" (Remember). :thmbsp: Ron.
Yup, another winner! Aerosmith did a great cover of that in Dec. '79.
foetusized 04-04-2005, 03:28 PM Phil Spector got most of the press, but George "Shadow" Morton was also a genius -- Foe
rca2000 04-04-2005, 04:51 PM What was that DREADFUL song a few years ago by some outfit called "4 Non-Blondes"? Some gal was screaming-basically out of tune-the whole song. Jeez, Louise....-Sandy G.
You are thinking of a song called "what's going on," IIRC, by 4 non-blondes. The one kept singing(if that is what you could it) "Hey--yea yea-yea -, hey-yea -yea-yea- What's going on?
That lovely gem, from the nmid '90's or so.
Jovinyl 04-04-2005, 06:54 PM Rock group named Fanny. Suzi Quatro's sister Patti Joined in 74

bordeno 04-04-2005, 07:41 PM The Waitresses
mhardy6647 04-04-2005, 08:58 PM The Waitresses weren't all girls... only two of 'em IIRC. And the lead singer, Patty Donahue, (she of "I Know What Boys Want") died quite young, of cancer.
PS. "Christmas Wrapping" is my favorite "rock & roll" (more or less) Christmas song. I am not ashamed to admit that.

bordeno 04-04-2005, 09:19 PM How could there be any shame in declaring how wonderful the song "Christmas Wrapping" is.....
jazzmo 04-04-2005, 09:34 PM Check the 70's band called Kiss. They wear weird makeup and play dreadfull music.

I am also I big Luscious Jackson fan - Not exactly obscure, but certainly not mainstream. I also Like Elastica quite a bit. Elasticas BBC "The Radio One Sessions" are particularly inspired :thmbsp:

VinylHanger 04-04-2005, 10:08 PM That 4 Non Blondes song is one of my favorites..... I never did say I had any taste.
Sandy G 04-04-2005, 10:17 PM Yeah ! And that banshee kept squawkin' about "Revolution". Well, lady, come the revolution, are we not only gonna kill all the lawyers, dreadful singers are gonna have a hard row to hoe as well...I guess her mama thought she was good, though. Sorry to hear that about the gal in "The Waitresses". I loved "I know What Boys Like" & "Christmas Wrapping", too-guess we've all "been there, done that". -Sandy G.
Toasted Almond 04-04-2005, 10:19 PM Girls Together Outrageous, or better known as The G.T.O.'s.

Elastica...alternative?
Sleater Kinny...college punk...love em
doodledog 04-04-2005, 11:47 PM Re: Reparata and the Delrons:
Apparently one of the Delrons later ripped off Reparata's name and used it when she joined Barry Manilow's other two backup singers. They released one album in '76 or '77 as Lady Flash. Great voices, but stylistically all over the map -- jazz, gospel, classic girl-group pop, all on one album. Good cover of Sutherland Bros. and Quiver's "Arms of Mary."
The title of that 4 Non-Blondes song, by the way, is actually "What's Up?"
Rick
crazycat 04-05-2005, 04:16 AM Can't forget

pentodedrive 04-10-2005, 07:58 AM The drummer in 'Elastica' was a bloke.
How about 'The Lunachicks' or 'Cycle Sluts from Hell'
Rex B 04-10-2005, 12:42 PM The Spice Girls
just kidding - they're pretty obscure now, but I don't think many people beyond the age of 13 thought their music was any good.
heathkit tv 04-10-2005, 02:49 PM Blast from the past (WWII-ish) "Dolly Dawn and her Dawn Patrol"
Zdsrft 04-10-2005, 02:59 PM Metric - girl band that has some really fun songs - parituclary "IOU" and "Combat Baby"
WhiskeyRebel 04-11-2005, 09:59 AM VIXEN! Edge of a Broken Heart. Remember them? The lead singer with the mountain of blonde hair down to her ass?
You want a grin, check out Broadzilla. All girl heavy metal outfit with a really amusing phsycho party slut vibe.
daddydlb 04-11-2005, 09:55 PM Grey Star, gal named Ruby Star. From the late 70's and early 80's. Had a whisky voice like Mellisa Etheridge. Her claim to fame if you call it that was singing backup to Black Oak Arkansas. If you recall the song "Jim Dandy" she sang the Go Jim Dandy Go! part. Red head with the personality to match. My sister owned a club she used to sing at occasionally. Had a good hard edge sound.
