Who do you think? I think most are pretentious bastards...and soft on top of that. However, Velvet Revolver has caught my attention. I figured they are pretty F'n sincere since their singer is legally psychotic and Slash is in it. I think they've got good stuff...it beats anything from the 90s up to now come to think of it....and they released their album on VINYL!!!!!! What do you think?

i'm probobly too old and distant from current music to offer an objective opinion but.....
i think Weyland deliberately altered his vocals in order to maintain distance between VR and STP. leads me to believe that VR is only a transient effort on his part. now please dont tell me that it is well known that VR is only a side project for him.

Sugardawg34

Well, I think it sounds the same as STP to be honest. I heard VR live and Weyland clearly uses no severly altering filters...he pretty much sings raw. The guy just has a good voice for that kind of music, I dont feel like its "put on" or a conscious effort to sound different. Thats just what I think though. Still, maybe the coolest part is the vinyl...im about to get a copy new for less than a freakin cd. Im kinda curious how it will sound though :scratch2:

Oh, and I also dont know if VR is just an interim thing. As long as they get along, I think it'll keep rolling...but we all know how fast bands split up these days. :worried:

After reading the thread, I'm figuring what yr really talking about is HARD rock- VR has been summarily trashed in every review I've read- not that I would have been drawn to it anyway- not interested.

As a HUGE Stone Temple Pilots fan.... the whole VR project just sucks! I mean, yeah, it's great that Scott is gettin to sing, but he needs his real band mates. STP music, there's just something about it.... and man, you should see them live - when STP was getting along, they had awesome stage chemistry.

I agree STP was better. But, my post is also a question. What new groups do yall think are best today, if any?

not really new anymore but i'd have to say.....

Queens of the Stone Age

i didnt mean to imply that he was using electronics to alter his voice. i felt he changed it physically and deliberately. VR always came off to me as a stop gap for Weyland, somthing to prove to STP that he's got his act together and can resume duties. again i have to plead ignorance here, this is only my impression which i havent bothered to check against reality.

Rex B
04-08-2005, 01:59 AM
Btw that's "Weiland".... not trying to be anal, but, yeah I am. :D

As far as electronic alteration, I don't think he is. He's always had a wide range that he can do, if you listen to some of the STP songs out there, no two really seem the same. On Crackerman, off of "Core", he does use a hand-held loud speaker (what are those called!!!) for parts of the song where he sings
Roamin', roamin', roam
Get away, gotta get away
And I think I think too much
I don't care, yeah and I don't care
Roamin', roamin', roam
Get away, gotta get away
And I think I think too much

Best NEW Rock group.... hmmm well I'm going to have to say that nothing that has come out in the last 5 years (00's) has impressed me particularly much... and not counting bands that form from others (a la VR, Audioslave), I'd say, Evanescence is decent, but very hard to spell.

Others that seem kinda good.... The Union Underground (hard rock), The White Stripes, Hot Hot Heat, Ignite..... but those are only main stream bands.... there are a lot of good underground bands around (check out http://www.theedge1039.com for that kinda stuff).

Yes! Evanescence! Amy Lee kicks ass!
Chevelle is OK too.
I agree about the VR being second class STP.
And now here's my real question, why would GNR drop axel Rose because of HIS problems and THEN pick up Scott Weiland ?? Hello?um, did I miss something here?

Ya know, I don't know why the reviews are so scathing! I think a lot of it has to do with the over-expectations of "Supergroups." Personally, I think VR is one of the best pure Rock 'N' Roll bands to come along in a while. The only other "Supergroup" I can think of at the moment, Audioslave, WAS completely over-hyped and glowing reviews were standard.

STP? Well, sure, VR sounds a lot like STP because they have the same lead singer! The guitars aren't anything close to STP, though. Slash's guitar is distinctly Slash's.

As for other new groups, there are a lot that have caught my ears lately. The Soundtrack of Our Lives has been around for a few years, but I LOVE their new LP.

Yes, sorry sandy but I do enjoy Amy Lee.
I have had the opportunity to see her live and Have several of their albums.
She shure does have some pipes.
None of my favorite Amy lee songs have been played on the radio so you probably wouldn't know the bulk of the work. Did you like "my immortal"?

I've been pleasantly surprised with The Mars Volta. Their style draws from 70's psychedelic rock, dub, and latin music. Its off beat to a certain degree, but the musicianship is top notch. I would also have to go with A Perfect Circle. Maynard Keenan, lead singer from Tool fronts the band, but their sound isn't what you would normally expect from Tool. It has a bit more acoustic sound to it, and their overall tone isn't so dark.

I have not been impressed with VR, talented but no direction. I enjoy Evanescence a lot, but moreso the European groups of similar music. But I am a loner in this crowd for new directions in rock music.

They are called Velvet Revolver for a reason.

Axel own's the rights to the name Guns and Roses. He has tried to tour with new members unsuccessfully. A new Guns and Roses album has been in the works forever and probably will never come out. Axel was on an MTV awards shows a few years back and he looked plastic and his vocals were way off.

Velver Revolver is a rehash and a general lack of creativity for the music industry. I don't think they sound bad, they just are nothing new. Lets throw together some members of some formerly huge bands and see what happens.

I think saying Velver Revolver beat everything from the 90s until now is a bold statement and one that I totally disagree with. I won't get into an argument though as music is subjective and I respect that you like I don't.

I have seen the White Stripes four times in concert and have around a 100 bootlegs and probably a dozen of their bootleg videos. Their concerts are some of ther best I have ever seen. They never stop amazing me with how they combine so many different forms of music and just totally rock. There isn't a band that comes close talent or integrity-wise in my eyes. Your mileage may very.

Wait, I did buy the Mars Volta LP the other day and really dig it.
De Loused In The Comatorium I think it is titled. I accidently got it into my stack and when I took it back they said I should really listen to the samples first and they were right. :)

Yeah I thought of A perfect Circle but they aren't really that new (and what are we defining new as 2-3 yrs)? But it is an excellent deviation from the Tool sound- almost kinda bluesy by comparison.

I have Comalies, not bad. I think they have been produced for the US market.
Though not new, Nightwish is "the group". Tell me Amy Lee isn't influenced heavily by them.

I bought the VR CD. I really like it. No new ground here, but if you like it, you'll like it, and I like it.

The first Strokes album is one of the best I've heard in ages. The second would sound great if the first hadn't been so amazing.

Take care,

If you like Nightwish, then I highly recommend After Forever's Decipher and Within Temptation's Mother Earth.

Exact same type of music as Nightwish. Gothic metal with heavenly voices aka "beauty and the beast". Good stuff.

The Killers - Hot Fuss. Excellent 80's new wave-y retro feel.

Wayne Robbins and the Hellsayers - The Lonesome Sea. If you like Neil Young then this is right up your alley.

Mofro - Lochloosa. Laid back greasy delta front porch steamin' bluesy music.

Porcupine Tree - In Absentia. A new release is coming very, very soon (April 26) and is titled Deadwing. Check it out.

I personally dont really care for anything out there right now, I think the industry pumps out what they think we want to hear, and only the groups with a little money and success can dictate a little creativity. I think most choose not to, or dont really have the talent.

Now one of the groups that I thought were going to be good but really isnt is "puddle of mud" great 1st cd but couldnt follow up. Maybe I am just to disguntled with the play lists the the radio media makes us listen to ,, over, and over and over and over, damn change the playlist a little. sorry for the rant

Forget Velvet Revolver and all those no-talent three-chord bands. If you're interested in real, good, genuine new rock and roll go to http://www.bloodshotrecords.com/ and look around. I highly recommend Trailer Bride and The Legendary Shack Shakers. This is rock and roll sports fans. Velvet Revolver (as well as GNR) is just loud BS.

Just my not so humble opinion of course.

Elroy my man,

I felt just like you did several years ago. "There's just no good music anymore" I said. Well, stop listening to the radio. The radio is not your friend Elroy. Dude, there's so much good music out there your ears will reach out and slap your across the face for not realizing it. You just have to know where to find it.

Radio is not the place. Unless you want corporate driven crap.

I like System of a Down. Not extremely new, but new enough I think.

Hell I am starting to get old. It's funny, one day you are riding along on the music train, listening to all the new stuff, then one day, for no apparent reason, you just jump off. I have seen it way to many times. My father, for example, jumped off sometime around 1980. My sister jumped off sometime around 1988. I am pretty sure I jumped off around 2002.

Alright, then please help me out. I don't have a narrow listening range for music types. VR is NOT one of my favorite bands...matter of fact, most hard rock doesn't suit me. Im mostly into music that I can just GROOVE out to. Stuff you can turn up loud and just let it carry you. Basically, im stuck in the '70s. Everyday I think, "if I could just find that one new band". I know its out there. I just really get turned away with all the corporate crap and celeb potential running the industry instead of music. The whole thing makes me sick at my stomach.

Give me some bands with serious musical talent, but also such that Im not analyzing it so much that I can't just chill and be moved by it. Remember hard rock isn't really my thing. Help!

I have to totally agree with the person above me the Black Keys are amazing. I have seen them live and they are just awesome. The things they do with just a guitar and a drummer boggle me. I consider them a modern blues band, but they definitely could have been huge a long time ago.

Another band you might want to check out is Chris Robinson (Black Crowes) has another band called New Earth Mud. Not necessarily hard rock or jammy, but a combination of the two.

Finding good music beyond the spoon fed crap is an effort. Once you find a few bands you really like it is all worth it.
