I have mentioned this dude a few times online. Yes, he ate his own shit onstage. Yes, he crammed stuff in his ass onstage. He punched his own teeth out with a microphone. He also had sex with animals, people, and committed a number of hilariously disgusting crimes while performing.

Thing is, I think he is hilarious and have a couple of his CD's! The music borders on "God-awful," but there is something about it that makes me crank it up occasionally. Does anyone else understand my Rock 'N Roll affliction?

aahhh, ggallin, 'musical' transgressor extraordinaire!! never seen, only heard of him. the music is inconsequential; his little dot in the history books is because of his extreme willingness to transgress, to make his performances more of an exorcism than anything. he drew on the fascination we all have for car wrecks and etc. i simply think he was one of the possible extremes of rock and roll, plummeting to the bottom of the dionysian outer orbits, w/o really contributing anything of substance.

i say, rock on, mg196

I would almost classify his stuff as "performance art" as opposed to music. Performance Art with a backing band, maybe.

My wife wont let me sing his stuff when I am around her, and she has made me hide the CD's now that we have a little one. I think Noah (my 21 month old) may have secretly been listening to the CD's though...he has the pooping down to a science!!

Oh, man, what can you say? I never went to one of his shows - prolly never would have, either. No desire to have feces thrown on me. But then, you've got less extreme acts - also gone - like Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics. And whatever happened to GWAR?

It is a strange, strange, world.

Best,

He hung around in Athens, GA for a little bit in the late 80s and early 90s. He hired some friends of my wife to be his backing back as he worked on an album. They were doing a show at the 40 Watt and GG started bashing himself in the face with is microphone. He was bleeding pretty heavy from his nose and mouth. He grabbed Greg's Old Milwaukee and took a huge swig. Greg looked over at GG and said "You can finish it, dude." GG did.

Later that night, GG started a fight with someone in the audience and he lost. After the show, he was all pissed at Greg and the other guys for not backing him up. They all quit on him that night.

GG was a mess.

Someone had posted 13 of his CD's in a single Torrent on a file-sharing site and I grabbed 'em! Some of the stuff is so pathetic that it is no wonder he resorted to pooping onstage! One song (from very early in his career) is titled 1980's Rock & Roll:

C'mon along it's a rock 'n' roll party
And bring your friends and don't be tardy
You're so far out you'll never be in
Until you hear what's happenin'

(Rock 'n' roll) Just the ladies
(Rock 'n' roll) 1980's
(Rock 'n' roll) Turn it up louder
(Rock 'n' roll) Never been prouder

Wow, now that is BAD! Funny thing is he has a few songs in his catalog that SOUND really good if not for the lyrical content. Wayne Kramer (MC5 guitar hero) and J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.) provided some killer backing music for a few select tracks. They must have been REALLY hard up for dope money!!

This guy always was a nut-job extraordinaire. I dunno, I think he gave 'punk' a bad name.

Speaking of oddball acts, whatever happened to John Valby?

I personally think he defined what punk rock is. Punk is not Avril or Blink its not about the music. It's about a lifestyle, what you have to say and that you would do anything just to get someone to hear you say it.

Met GG at the Brockton City Fair.

It was quite appropriate.

I saw him live back in 1981.It was one of the wildest shows i've seen aside from The Plasmatics(rip Wendy O Williams),The Dead Kennedys, and Millions of Dead Cops from that era.

Like Herpes, GG Allin and this thread thrives on in the crotch of music. He'd like it that way.

Very appropriate! And despite either proponents, defendants or those totally devoid of interest and even those against mention of him, like a staff infection, he lives on, itching, infecting and remaining, whether for the good or bad.... most likely for the latter, for those who personally knew him or came into contact with him one-on-one...

Let me put it this way....after his show they practically had to steralize the place after he was naturally arrested by the Atlanta police.

Yes,he most certainly left his mark in the annuls of punk history.Truly a disgusting individual riding the fine thread to a path of destruction.

Still,he put out several great raw hard tunes in his early days.

No arguements here. Though it's a bit of a dizzying recollection when remembering him.

I'd not want to shake his hand-ever- please god no- where it has been, yech, but witnessing his antics first-hand, he truly was a unique individual, and one hard to forget- positive or negative, your choice.

I'm privy to more GG Allin than trivia and info I care to admit, from friends who grew up in Manchester and who knew him. I am all too familiar with his "Bag 'O Tricks" he carried around- the porn, gun, and alcohol in a gym bag, his "Aids Brigade" rename of his band when he was promoting his new single (Expose yourself To Kids) and slumming around Brockton, Mass, and his other whacked-out extreme showcases. Who could forget him onstage with his bad hygiene, excrement tossing, and oral sex bits, his de-toothing of himself, the Heroin shoot-ups, and general spectacle of a human train wreck in action?

For those not in the know, GG's ultimate goal was to overdose on heroin while performing on stage. He jumped the gun and did it too soon, off stage, after a release from prison (I don't know how long he was out). He never fufilled his personal goals and self-described vulgar and pressing fantasies.

I remember seeing a picture of his 'wake' with the body lying in state in only underpants, and his brother reaching down the front of GG's shorts for the camera. Some family. I think it's actually the brother in the news pic. I have nightmares about people like this, which I'm sure was their intention.
John Valby doesn't even compare. More like 'Il Duce'.
