I was talking to Papa B the other night, and I could almost hear his jaw drop when I gave him my "total # of songs update"... I've got 1846 songs for a total of 5 days, 12 hours, 57 minutes, and 25 seconds of continuous music. Granted, back in the day when Napster and all that good stuff was kicking (and I was younger!), I picked up a lot of songs, but I've also had a huge increase in the size of my CD library, which I always put on my computer because that way I don't have to constantly swap stuff out. Is this normal? Am I obsessed with music?

No - ask Reel to reel. Music is the main thrust of this hobby!! TO ENJOY MUSIC!! Music is our obsession, really.

Yea Rex B, my jaw was nearly dislocated when I heard that. As to whether you have an obsession with music, I sincerely hope so! :thmbsp: My music library consists of about 200 lp's, and approx. the same number of cd's. There's quite a bit of overlap between the vinyl & the cd's.

Thank you Rex B (Size of your music library?) That's a term I use, library. Before I left Ca. I put over 6000 rock records in alphabetical order and some copies same album different labels and design. I still have more than that amount to be sorted, jazz, R+B, Country, Pop, classical,12" dance,Etc. packed up in boxes again but it's my library of music not a record collection, though I'm sure there are collectibles in there. Music library, my opinion a term used by someone who values the music not how much the record will sell for. there is nothing wrong with that either. Hope to get it to Ma. this year. ROAD TRIP coming.

Well if you're road trippin' be sure that your records (vinyls I presume...) are well protected for all the bumpy roads you might be taking.

Are you counting mp3's? I have 10,741 of them now (478 hours, 28 gig).
I don't even know or like all of the stuff but it is facinating to scroll through the years and see the evolution of the music. Also interesting to see how many different versions were made of some songs.

I do miss (free) Napster, it was great to be able to find anything, no matter how obscure, on demand.

My collection: 17,067 songs, 51 days, one hour, 29 minutes, 53 seconds and growing. Have a turntable on the way so I can get my vinyl in iTunes. My goal is 20,000 songs by the end of the year.

I put 2246 of my favorite tunes on my ipod which is compatible with my car system. That is about 2% of my music from RTR, vinyl, cassette, CD and the lowly 8 track. I have also downloaded about 36 hours of Suspense and Mystery Theater. Does size really matter? In this case my wife would wish for smaller.

I have 4 milk crates of albums, about 80 CDs and 3120 mp3s. Its not to much but it keeps me happy and when I get bored of them I put on this thing called a tuner. You should check these things out, you tune it to a station with numbers and you get music. :yes:

According to Moodlogic (a program I use for MP3s), I have 25,516 mp3s. They are almost all from CDs. Emusic tossed in 100 mp3s to test their service. This would not include mosty of the SACDs I have yet to convert or any LPs.

You almost wonder why I need to pay for XM and Rhapsody!

I catalog my music in a database from a company called Collectorz.com so it's easy to get this infromation:

I have roughly 110 cds, 230 LP's, 100 more 78's, 44 cassettes, 19 8-tracks, and 58gb of mp3's.

Not a big collection, but it's ever growing. Foetus-- I think you win on cd's...

There was a time when I downloaded music files but that was a few years ago when Napster and Audio Galaxy were big. Still have quite a few of them but for the most part they just take up space on my hard drive. Yeah, I burned some of them onto CD converting them to .cda files (I don't have anything that plays mp3's outside of my computer) but in all honesty, I was not impressed by the sound. Uncompressing mp3 files made them too lossy. The iPod has revitalized the mp3 format and has made music extremely portable now. I'm just not sure I want to take the plunge.

Anyway, I catalog all of my cd's in Micoslam's Excel and store the file on a zip drive and then keep that in a fire proof safe.

It's a relatively small collection (1500cd's) but it's well organized (alpabetical and by genre). I like to think of it as a library and not a collection although I do have what others may call "collectors" items such as MFSL and DCC gold cd's.

I'm always on the lookout for a new cd.

Wow! Those are huge collections! I've been going through my entire collection of approx. 250 cds playing each song at least once. It's taking me over three months and it will be several more days before I'm done. Mind you I haven't spent nearly as much time listening as I've done in the past, so its taking me more time. Another thing that slows me down is listening to crap discs. But if its in my collection I have to play it. However my rules will change next session and I will allow myself to skip over these. There's no point to listening to bad music. It just makes owning a kick ass system pointless.

When I got to work today, a buddy of mine called me down to his office. I met him there and followed him out to his car. On the way, he told me he had been out looking around (on the side he runs a little antiques/junk store) and came across a place that had a stack of LPs. He asked them what they wanted for them - 3 bucks. He snagged these without really having an idea that I would want them and also not being sure what they were (he is not musically inclined).

A quick scan and I wanted them. Appears to be maybe the entire Jethro Tull catalog, some Ten Years After, ZZ Top, Pink Floyd, Steve Miller, others....44 LPs in all. Very few duplicates of my collection. The first couple look and sound good.

So to the topic of this thread - about 700 LPs and half that many CDs.

Just had a look at my OrangeCD database and i'm currently at 8400 recordings


4600 MP3 albums
1840 CDs
1050 LPs
700 7" Singles

These make up the bulk of my stuff and then there's the tapes, reel tapes, 78s, 12"s, DCC and Minidiscs.

Seems like you're mixing your analogies - guys don't have penis envy, that's a problem some women are reputed to suffer from. :scratch2:

My ML is small, and reflects my musical taste which is quite limited, although I am working to expand the scope of what I like. Thanks to dingus Midnight Oil has been added to the artists I enjoy. :D

Not counted exatly, but I rekon I have currently 300 CDs, 150 LP's, 100 7" singles, 40 MD, and 50 Reel to Reel tape.
Then we get to the mp3, currently the mp3 db is running at 6000.

I'm adding to my Reel's, LP's & CD's normally at the rate of one or two a week, mp3, basically I just pick 300 tracks a week from Napster, then play and re-record to mp3 :naughty:

if Blue Sky Mining wasnt your cup of tea (imo the Oil's only stab at a pop album) then try the afore mentioned "Red Sails in the Sunset" and;

punk - "Midnight Oil", "Head Injuries" and "Bird Noises"
rock - "Place Without a Postcard", "10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1", "Species Deceases"
modern - "Earth and Sun and Moon" - dont know quite how to classify this
progressive - "Breathe"
industrial - "Redneck Wonderland"
modern - "Capricornia"

this is my take on how the albums best fit into any single genre, i'm sure most folks familiar with the band would have a different opinion. all are masterpieces in their own right.

there is also some excellent live stuff - "Scream in Blue" and "The Real Thing" (there are 2 versions of The Real Thing, you would want the 14 track CD/LP). on DVD there is "20,000 Watt RSL", "Best of Both Worlds" only in PAL format for now, and "Wave Aid" where the band reformed for the tsunami relief benefit (they broke up in December, 2002 due to Pete going into Aussie politics - he was elected into office last November). on VHS are "Black Rain Falls" - a gig staged in front of the Exxon building in Manhatten to protest the oil spill by the tanker Valdez in AK, "Black Fella, White Fella" - a documentary of the band as they toured the outback of Australian aboriginal towns, and "MTV - Midnight Oil Unplugged".

I have that on videotape somewhere, taped off the air when MTV showed it on 120 Minutes back in the day. I used to tape the show (it aired midnight to 2AM) then watch it later when it better met my school and work schedule, and at one time I found a pair of videotapes with 3 episodes each.

As I recall it, it was a great documentary, much better (IMHO) than the overly-polished Blue Sky Mining -- Foe (off to go look up the Oils on half.com)

I haven't counted lately but my vinyl collection has mushroomed over the past couple of years. Must have close to 600 lp's 200cd's 40 cassettes thats it.

I have so many LPs , CDs, & reel to reel tapes & cassettes that I never need to paint or wallpaper again! I must have between 3,000 to 4,000 LPs (I have friends in the biz), 2,000 to 3,000 CDs, & who knows how many tapes. My marriage has been threatened many times by my collection.

How many songs? :worried: Whats the average on an LP/CD? 10? 12? 78s?. 45s i think i can figure out :D

14,000- 16,800 on Lp/cds

400 on 45's

maybe 600-1000 on 78s?

WAG of 400 - 600 on R2Rs


So conservativly 17,000 cuts? :dunno:

Just a piker with ~500 lp's, 150 cd's, 100 cassetes and I am working on some R to R's (new to me)...not sure how many songs on the HD...

I too miss the free download days of Napster. That is probably the single reason I keep my vinyl around for the hard to get tunes. What I don't miss is my computer open to a shareware environment...had to rebuild that operating system three times due to various spywares/virus's...keep a condo on that baby now...slow learner!...a

Hmmm...stiff competition here! My wife would have been out the door long ago if I had as many cds as some of the guys here.

As it is, small potatoes: 300 odd cds, a small collection of essential vinyl that I couldn't bear to part with, and ~18000 tracks on the hard drive.

For those of you who say they miss Napster, there's still a far better alternative out there -- run Google on DC++. Some of the larger hubs run with over a petabyte of data on them, and a little bit of searching can find you almost anything still.

The easiest way would estimate would be to measure in crates or feet as it seems like I'm spending more tme organizing and 'piling' than listening, although I do listen while I organize:

I've got roughly 800-850 discs, counting CDs, DVD-As and SACDs. And probably 400 or so DVDs. At one time I had a few hundred cassettes and LPs, but I long since got rid of them.
