Dayum - I feel small and inadequate. Not counting the old tube consoles w/electrostatic speakers, I have only 5 Pioneer SX's, 1 Kenny KR, and 2 Yamahas with "Natural Sound." There are some supporting devices such as turntables, tapes (both kinds), and early '80s CDs, and a little over a dozen speakers, but I certainly don't have the like of some of the aural harems I've seen posted here. Some of you guys/girls could start audiophile whore-house ranches with private rooms in a secluded place and never run out of gear.

On a side note, a local guy who does buying and flipping owns a large 2-story brownstone which I have visited The entire basement and first floor is a collection of mostly audio gear, with a smattering of other household goods like sewing machines and such. There is basically only a path through each room with gear stacked along both sides all the way to the 9' ceilings. I went looking for DOA units worth repairing and stopped counting at about 130 systems when we went to look in the basement. He said he also had some more scattered about the second floor, which was also his living space and workshop. The lower 4,000 square feet was completely jammed (no pun intended). It was awe inspiring.

I've had maybe 20 of them. What's left?

I have five: Marantz 2275, Pioneer SX1250, Sansui 9090 and 9090DB, and a Sony STR-7800 SD. I like them all. The 9090 is getting overhauled, and when it comes back, the Sony will have to go.

My only one worth listening to.

Pioneer SX-780 - Works well, needs the balance pot replaced. I have a pot but didn't change it yet.

Marantz 2252B - I really like this unit but I can't get the A/B speaker switches to work without cutting out no matter what I've done. Haven't looked into taking the switches apart yet.

Kenwood KR-7600 - My favorite of the bunch. One day the sound cut out and it made a terrible hum. It's not been powered up since :sigh: It's cosmetically about mint with rack handles.......just a big, beautiful beast.....a perfect candidate for an Echowars resto :thmbsp:

I decided to invest in one receiver after owning waaaay too many. My SX-850 has been to EchoWars and functions like a dream. It's all I need as far as I'm concerned. Sometimes I get tempted to screw around with separates and/or tube, but this keeps me in check with the cold hard facts (my income).

i bought my first amp in 76, brand new ka8004 cost a little of 300 dollars, i knew i wanted 60 watts, so it was a matter of price, i still have it, needs work, and what save it from being throw out was a sticker from welcome to the machine, i am listening to it now on a ka501 that i just bought, built in 1980. joining reading this forum has made think about my 8004, i bought another last week, and a ka8100 and ka7300 and several more. i had been out of work for 18 months recently got my job back, been going to thirft stores and found a pair of advent prodigy towers, 35 dollars, refoamed them and a pair of large advent that i bought in2007 my xwife had given me kewood krv5560 i hooked it up with a yamaha cdx1, this was in my family room, which had a ka7400 that i bought for 15 dollars tens years ago. i had be listening to a panasonic ke sa100 for the last ten years, i have several pairs of old advents, infinitys, etc it fun to look for them at antique stores and thifts. i am so glad that i didn't follow the advice of if you don't use it in a year get rid of it.... i could be content with so much less, but at least i know what i want, it sure fun to collect and listen and feel the old equipment live and breath,

I had a Kenwood KR-3600, but my ex basically stole that from me. To avoid problems, I let it go. I really liked that receiver though. Had a great sound. I plan on picking up another KR receiver one day.

Right now, the STA-2000 is in my main rig, with my Mach One speakers. It's the only one I own with enough power to wake them up. At this point, I'm pretty happy with everything I own.

Do you like the onkyo? I don't care for my 6500 mkII, it sounds harsh compared to the H/Ks on my Cornwall 2s. I think it needs some new caps but I can't justify it with the 930 sounding sooo good. If I heard one up to specs maybe I would like it. I can say one thing about it, it has a giant transformer in it. If I have to move it one more time I think I'll blow out my back. Same for the citation 12s, ugh!!!

Move up the food chain! The TOTL KR-9600 is pricey and unobtanium, but I the next model down, the KR-7600 (80 wpc into 8Ω) is plenty powerful and affordable. I got mine from a local eBay seller for $91 a couple years ago. I think they go for $100 or slightly more these days.

Haha, Definitely. That's why I just left it at something from the KR series. I liked the 3600, but if I'm going to go out of my way to obtain a receiver, I'm gonna at least get something with a bit of power. I really miss the 3600 I had though. If you look at the faceplate, you'll noticed the little thin strip of raised plastic around the tuner numbers. Most receivers have it. Like a trim. Well, the silver on mine had worn off in quite a few places. So I masked the whole faceplate off except for that little trim, and I layed a nice coat of gold over it. So the face was still mostly silver, but with this little gold trim to break it all up. Man, that was like the sharpest looking receiver I had. I loved that thing. Ah well. I plan on giving the next KR I get the same treatment.

But only 4 of the 11 would qualify as a receivers in a strict sense. 1969 FISHER Royal Electra with a 175-T receiver. '63 Nordmende Isabella with a single chassis. 2 of the Maggies have single chassis.

I like receivers but I like separates a lot more. As far as receivers go, i've only got 3.

Pioneer SX3900, SX1080 and SX 1250. Don't really have any of them set up right now.

Currently, I'm running a Spec 1 and Spec 2 combo, a Spec 1 and Spec 4 combo and an extra Spec 2 that I picked up recently.

I also like the integrateds. I've got 2 SA 9800's also. I really like the smooth sound of these.

Presently two:
Yamaha CR-840: heart of my office system, fine sound and cosmetics, pleasure to use every day.
Realistic STA-860: cosmetically nice, but needs power amp repair.

Used to have an early-70s Fisher. Still have Rotel RX-1050 but that doesn't count as vintage. And I have a Yamaha HTR-5650 for home theatre. But most of my systems over the last 20 years have included integrated amps or separates.

In my main listening room I'm running a Sansui 9090DB. The living room currently has a Pioneer SX-939 although I've just gotten a Sansui G-6700 to try out in there. The bedroom system is being driven by a Kenwood KR-5600. My wife's office has a Yamaha CR 820. These are all vintage. I am currently using a Denon 591 for the HT in our cabin which will undoubtedly be separates soon.

Well I know I started this thread and loved my vintage stuff when I started it but I have to say, the ming da m34ab tube amp I got makes all solid state sound like $%&@. You can't beat the sound of tubes period. It's like draining the water from your ears. I will never go back.

Just picked up a yamaha cr2020 on the bay, needs some tlc but it'll join the cr-1020 the marants 2215 and the luxman cr-1055

The SX-650 & the 2238 Blk are gone, and I miss them.

I have a receiver 8080db, red LED at the beginning and remains continuously paepadenado, also has no sound. Just check the power transistors and are ok. I recommended as estubo unused for a long time.

I also have a recent model Denon 4308 home theatre receiver in my home theater.

As indicated in my signature, my two main systems both use relatively modern separates (except for the MR-78 tuner, which is vintage - that was originally restored by me, and recently repaired and aligned by Terry DeWick).

so far I have the Pioneer SA-7500 II and the TX-5500 II tuner and love every note that comes out of them! :banana:

Every one of them. Nothing newer than 1979. Mostly Mid 60's to Mid 70's

Then there are the consoles. Split about evenly between tube and SS. Newest is a 70 Maggie. Oldest is a 58 RCA. 5 FISHERS, 3 Maggies, 1 Grundig, 1 Nordmende, 1 RCA. But only 4 of the 11 would qualify as a receivers in a strict sense. 1969 FISHER Royal Electra with a 175-T receiver. '63 Nordmende Isabella with a single chassis. 2 of the Maggies have single chassis.

I just picked up a 1951 FISHER CORONET in the WARWICK Cabinet and a 59 FISHER 510 Consolette. The 560 companion is coming this weekend. So 14 consoles all together.
6-1-12 EDIT: Delete the SX1010, 400, QX9900, 1000A. Add a HK TWO Thirty, 2 Realistic STA-65C's, Fisher 500TX, 550T. Newest is my SX790(1978) Oldest is my 800C(1965). Plus a FISHER 101-R Tuner. Plus I got a 610 head unit for the Fisher 510 consolette (610 is AM/FM/phono. 510 is phono only.)

12-7-12 EDIT: Bought back the Sansui 1000A, got a Sansui 2000, and a Pioneer SX-737.

4-6-13 EDIT: Add SX-939, Scott 342 Fisher 101-R tuner, the 800-C is now in a 1963 Executive Console Cabinet(See Avatar).

Everything is now restored.


Of all the receivers I'd have to say it's a toss-up between the Sansui1000A and the 800C being my favorite TUBE Unit, and the 737 is my favorite SS unit.

CR 2020 - at my brothers - he just picked it up for me. It might not make it to my house now... but I might not need it because...

I feel so inadequate, as I have NONE! I had a small one I bought in HS, but got rid of it when I bought an ONKYO A-5 Integrated Amp (still in use) in college. I've got a mid 90's Onkyo in my bedroom, but that hardly qualifies as vintage.

I have a Marantz 2235b which is going into the shop on Monday for a long-awaited tuneup and complete recap. I'm really looking forward to hearing any improvements. Also, I've finally found a "sweet spot" with the bass-mid-treble dials that sounds just right. This Marantz stereo can sound a bit too heavy and blooming in the bass.

I have my eye on a couple other vintage stereo receivers, but I'm also wondering if I should get separate units (preamp-power amp-tuner) instead. As always, everything depends on money. We'll see what happens this week.

They are a mid 1980's JVC R-X330V Digital Synthesizer Stereo and a late 1960's or very early 70's GE Stereo Record Player/Radio (was my older Brother's 1st stereo, and as I have not used it in over 25 years, I cannot remember it's exact model #, etc but I remember he taped a 1943 Steel Penny to the head of the tone arm for extra weight, LOL!).

Five Luxman R117s. I can't believe that there is any better receiver in terms of sound. I am hard pressed to find reasoanbly priced separate amps and preamps that match the sound that this gem is capable of.

Oh yeah, Sansui 9090, and B & O 5500, 6500, and 7000 series Beomasters. I know, I know nobody likes B & O. If you don't use their speakers they are really quite acceptable.

Added another one to the list.

Pioneer SX-7, an early 80's sleeper: 60 WPC at 8 ohms from 20 to 20000 Hz with no more than 0.009 % total harmonic distortion. It even has a MC phono input.
Specs out as a respectable tuner too:

It sounds great hooked up to my Optimus-2B speakers. Everything seems to work; it doesn't seem to need DeoxIT treatment. Let's see how long the integrated circuits and the "Computer Controlled" work. I got it cheap.

I'm always amazed that one of the premier Japanese manufacturers of high end vintage stereo equipment is hardly ever mentioned here at AK (or at least not many members in this thread say they own any) The Lux Corp. was one of the first companies in Japan to start selling imported radio's in Japan when they first became available in the late twenties. Then they began making their own "electronic parts" to produce high end stereo equipment that was very well respected and sought after in the audiophile community of the 70's and early 80's. I remember my first "real" stereo I bought at a "high end retailer" back in the late seventies namely Myer Emco of the Washington D.C. area. They only sold two manufactuers of recievers ... Yamaha and Luxman. It really wasn't until the mid 80's (when sold to Alpine) that the name Luxman began a slow decline. I have two vintage recievers and only two. They are both Luxman's from around 1980. They have a warm wonderful sound quality that's deep and rich to the ears and very pleasantly "intense" even at low listening levels. Check out the liquid filled heat sink in this fine example of vintage Japanese recievers the Luxman R-3055 & R-3045.
Here's a little text from Wikipedia ...
"Lux Corporation was founded in Japan, in June 1925, by T. Hayakawa & his brother K. Yoshikawa. It began life as the radio equipment department of Kinsuido Picture Frame Store in Osaka, until then an importer of picture frames, and was founded just ahead of the time when radio was first broadcast that year.

At the time, Japanese radio listeners were dependent on technology originating in the United States and Europe. Importing radio equipment and parts was a very forward-looking enterprise (much today's cutting-edge businesses) for Lux, and passersby often crowded the store to hear the inviting sounds of the radios on display.

However Lux Corp. decided that in order to compete effectively as a supplier it had to not only sell equipment but manufacture parts in-house to reduce the costs of importing. An engineer Atsushi Miura married Mari Yoshikawa, Mr. K Yoshikawa's eldest daughter and became a part of the founding 'Luxman' family. Atsushi Miura's father was an audio engineer and was head of Luxman for many years in Japan. In the early 1980s Atsushi took over the reins from his father to run Luxman. Sensing the Japanese audio industry was heading towards cheaper mass produced components and against the founding philosophy of Luxman, Atsushi sold Luxman to Alpine in 1984, before starting the Airtight audio brand."

When I bought my stereo back in 1978, I spent countless hours at the stereo shop auditioning receivers, turntables, cartridges, cassette decks, and speakers.

Yes---the cassette deck effort was a colossal waste.

The turntable/cartridge work was, IMHO well-rewarded: I still have my Dual 1237 TT equipped with my MicroAcoustics MA282e cartridge/stylus, and they still work beautifully.

The speakers were New Large Advents, which I still have, re-foamed, and they still sound great.

The receiver was an Onkyo TX-2500 MkII, 40 WPCH/8 Ohms

I could not afford what I really wanted: The TX-8500 MkII.

I guess I am satisfying an old desire: I have several vintage receivers, all Onkyos...

These are the ones for many reasons that are my favorites. Always ready to welcome a new find but not wanting to add to the number really. Have paired down on speakers and turntables some but a cool receiver is so hard to say no to.

One 1989 Sony stereo music receiver (not including the Sony 5.1 receiver).

The middle of the line at the time, $400. Bought it new at Circuit City for the wife. She never used it. It's a really 'heavy' amp.

It's amazing...it really sounds pretty darn good!! And it still works today as good as the day I bought it. Just perfect.

We rarely used it. But I did use it for 7 months a couple years ago when both my other amps crashed out. I plugged it in and I was really quite suprised at how good it really did sound. It was like...wow! I just never remembered it sounding that good.

Sony made some quality gear back in the 80s.

I've thinned the heard over the last year, but these are whats left. Most aren't vintage, however all but two are 20+ years old
