I saw an interesting show the other night, thought I'd pass along my thoughts. It was a Savion Glover show, Improvography II. Starts out with a very talented gent playing the stand up bass. Slowly the rest of the jazz band comes out, a pianist, percussion, and finally a woodwind player. Then Savion comes out and starts tapping to what these guys have going on. At first, his tapping was loud and somewhat annoying. But eventually they got it balanced out and the energy started to roll, which was lacking a little at first.
It is a lot of improv, like a lot of good jazz shows are. But this was a cool twist. Savion would sort of challenge the musicians one at a time, he's start by following what they were doing and eventually, they'd switch and follow his moves. The pianist was amazing! All the players seemed about the same age, mid 50s or so. Seasoned with tons of talent, I don't think I've ever seen a drummer with a bigger smile and having more fun.
What was so cool is that these guys REALLY seemed to be having fun. To the point that they were hugging at the end of the show. If you like jazz and an interesting performance, you may want to check it out if it comes your way.
Here's a link to the upcoming shows...
