My 19 year old decides she wanted to build her own system. All she really needed was some small speakers and she wanted to make them. So with a little guidance from me, she built these free-air baffles on her own. She cut the hardboard on the table saw, drilled starter holes for the jig saw with the drill press, cut out the holes with a jig saw and cleaned them up with a table drum sander. Painted with some Krylon red and installed the Sony Xplodes. They were finished in one afternoon.

They stand with the help of some wide L-brackets. They are driven with a JBL Power 20 amp. Not to shabby for the first time using power tools. No it's not even MID-FI, but she's very proud of them and I'm proud of her.

I'll bet cha had a big smile on your face when she said,
"Dad, I wanna build some speakers!" :thmbsp:

The nice thing is now she can move on to some sealed boxes and use these as the front baffles. The life long journey begins.

I love that Krylon red finish. I guess the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. :) Very nice little rig she has there. I assume those Explode's are 4ohm speakers. I bet that little JBL does a fine job of driving those.

Just have her shove a couple of coffee cans on the back of the speakers, It'll make a big improvement in the bass, but with almost no effort. Seeing how simple & easy a major improvement can be done could inspire her.

My 12-year old started to build electronic kits when she was 5. Soldering & all. Had a real talent at it, too. But she got bored with that & quit. Still has a very active interest in science. And music.
