Two things you can count on. It will be a full house and I will not be a popular guy..
Can't we all just get along?

Hmmmmmm
How to lure Grumpy away from the action when the nice ones are up???
Just kidding!
This could get ugly though. The place should be jammed and the nice stuff prolly will get hit hard, especially with all us locals.
Do you think it all works???

Grumpy was busy. Kegger, Marcus and I were there too and let's just say several carloads of gear left. Lots of radios and tubes, but we pretty much jumped on the vintage stereo stuff.
I just got done checking out the AR-1 and Ar-1W I got and I'm smiling

Dynaco SCA-35 tube amp, my big purchase of the day.

I'm tired and grumpy from spending too much money.
I made myself stay away. I had absentee bids on a few pieces, and bidding went higher on almost all. I liked the looks of the Dyna SCA-35, the Hickok 800A, Eico HF-86... didn't get any of them. I'm supposed to get a Fisher FM-200B though.
Any great surprises? Were there a lot of 45 tubes and such?

How much did the SCA-35 go for? I like those little guys a lot. Put in great diodes and some PS mods and it rocks.

I don't really look to hard for tubes. Sides there were guy there just for them and they know far more then me. In other words There were not a whole lot of deals on tubes but I know people like Andy prolly got some smoking deals.
Andy got one of the SCA's and I took the MK IV's as well as most of the fisher I wanted. I threw a few bids at the 200B's to ensure they did not go at garage sale prices.

There were two. I paid $120 for mine, which was the second. I think Markus111 got the other, which was over $100 too. Grumpy may have wound up with a lot of your absentee stuff too; there was more than a few pieces a couple of us were after at the same time.
I bought mine to play with a bit. I was thinking of getting one before I bought the Almarro A205a, so I indulged a bit and bought this one. It is in nice shape with minor missing lettering on the power on/off and all original Dynaco tubes. Dynaco branded Telefunken 12AX7 and domestic 6BQ5 and 7199s. There's no downside as I can always flip it (if it works!!) and prolly break even or ahead.
What mods would you suggest for a fumble fingered, green as grass, wannabe solder slinger?

I would have liked to get that KX-200 amp -- I bet Grumpy got it. But that's why I stayed away -- I don't NEED it!
Okay, the easiest best mod for the SCA-35 is to replace the two cheap nasty diodes with two quality diodes. It's a very satisfying mod, and you only unsolder 3 points, then solder 3 points, with only 1 wire staying put at each term strip "wicket". You can do this! The only diodes I ever put in were IRC HexFreds (I purchased a large quantity in a group purchase years ago), so I can't offer any comparisons, but the 'freds give a hands down improvement in bass, imaging...
You might see if you can get one of those cute little PCBs from Sheldon Stokes for the PS filter stages. Or you can replace the CRC with a CLC -- just change the 50 ohm resistor between the two filter caps with a little choke of similar DCR. You get a little more relaxed natural sound. Have fun! I might have some pix of ones I've modded... but the only point would be to show you some very ordinary or even mediocre craftsmanship that still worked well sonically. You might look and say to yourself, Jeez, *I* can do that well!

No such luck.
The big bucks went to those radios. That yellow and red Fada bullet in the ad went for over $2900 to an absentee who bid $4000 max. That Cobalt one leading off the ad went for a couple grand also.
I fergit what the Bose 301s went for..... :lmao: :lmao:

Allright allright I'm in. Had to take a nap from all the excitement! Good to see andy and
I guess it was good to see grumpy there "bidding on everything I wanted" LOL!
But seriously I'm still learning what's what and grumpy has a much better grasp on the
scene and knew what to get and how much to give, where I knew a few things.
So here's my probably average haul with a couple kool pieces I like.
Seco fb-4 inductance checker "which if it works I could really use"
living sound system (mono amp) 21-7020, Don't know more then that at the moment.
Heathkit AS-11 tuner.
HK TA224 reciever with 7408? output tubes. all tubes included!
Stromberg carlson ASR-433 stereo 24 integrated amp. EL84 output tubes.
heathkit AA13 amp.
sencore oscilloscope ps-1484.
eico oscilloscope 460
no name mono amp unknown tubes.
3 misc turntables and some throw in stuff.
Kegger

So far so good , the living sound amp provided an amperex bugle boy "mullard" 12ax7.
The HK unit provided (4) telefunken 12ax7's all 5 tubes test as new, both sections!
Those tubes alone probably pay for my whole score, yyyiipppeeeee!!!
Allright now if some of this gear isn't to beatup were doing really nice.

Were there any special speakers at the auction?

Tubino if you check the previous page second from the bottom you can
see my whole score.
But the HK involved here is the TA-224.
Well after bringing it up on the variac I only get 1 channel, so got some
diagnosing to do. All output tubes test as new also! It uses 7408's

Well,
I finally unpacked the car. I was whipped Sunday, and worked late the last few nights. Brought home some good stuff, but everything needs a little work. I was concentrating on the Marantz gear, because my brother and a couple of friends have expressed an interest in Marantz receivers. Nothing like getting new folks hooked on vintage sound! It's nice to see people's eyes open for the first time they play a 20 year old receiver and it blows away the black brick they bought at Best Buy last year. Anyway, heres the take.
Marantz 1200b
Marantz 2230
Marantz 22
Marantz 15 (in pieces)
Eico HF86
Dyna SCA35
EV Regency and Aristocrat
Zenith console radio.
Bunches of parts for Dual turntables.
And a big surprise. I bought a box lot of parts, and at the bottom were 2 tubed 2-way crossovers! They are made by Van Amp. I've never heard of them, but they are adjustable from 90hz to 1500hz. It was amazing timing, as I was just about to build a pair from scratch.
It was nice to see some fellow AK'ers there, and talk shop for a while. There were also about 15 guys from my radio club there - kind of like a mini reunion. It's a shame to have bid against such nice folks  Oh well, I'm sure some of this gear will change hands a few more times yet before it's all over.

Markus, NICE HAUL. I'd like to see pictures of the tube xovers.
I wonder how old they are? The only old ones I know are the Marantz and the Heathkit XO-1.
Let me know if you ever want to swap the Eico HF-86 for something. It's a neat little unit that takes well to a few simple mods, and I've got the matching preamp (HF-85). I'm just down the road from you, in Toledo. Try me if you need anything.

I'll second Grumpy on that. The guy took EVERTHING apart. All of those console radios had the speakers and chassis removed and put in different places, and the knobs removed from the chassis. Anyone trying to put together a radio had to bid on and try to win 4 seperate auctions! Also, he took all of the darn screws out of all of the hifi pieces. The screws. What the f@*#? I mean, I have 2 or 3 things opened up and on my bench at any given time, but everthing in my collection all at once? Bizarre!!!!

So far my stuff seems to have to all the parts and screws, musta got lucky.
Still haven't fixed the HK though.
Andy's sca-35 is alive after vacing it on up, got a little hum and could use some
output tubes in a little better shape but she works!

Don't forget about the hum pot on the back. Though on second thought that might only adjust filament balance on the phono tubes...
Kegger
05-20-2005, 03:52 PM
Tubino I was curious of those 2 hum pots. They don't seem to do much if anything
on the sound of the hum. But maybe like you say there for the phono which I have
not tested yet but will shortly.

Well, I'm pretty pleased so far.
The AR's work fine so they've made my day.
Kegger's got the SCA-35 variac'd, up and running (thank you sir!!) and says it sounds nice, so I'm happy about that too. Needs some fresher 6BQ5s though
The tube tester works and a I got a couple of Telefunken 12AX7s and some other Teles amd Mullards in the lot boxes, so that's cool too. Plus I was able to hook Kegger up with a needed tube from the lot.
I haven't tested the Dual, but the Lafayette reciever mistake is a fuse blower and headed to the 'bay as a parts piece and the HK 50+ has lights and switch noise in the FM position, but no audio. I'll have to test it a bit further with some other inputs.
All in all, a nice haul and some time well spent with good company. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday afternnoon at all

Tubino - sorry that this response was such a LONG time in coming! Here are pictures of the tube crossovers. Of course, I forgot to take pictures of the inside when I had them opened up. It looks like they are 2nd order for both the high pass and low pass.
