We watched this movie tonight and though it is a bit long at 2 hours it is one of the finest stories put to film that I have seen. People on the edge of society in New Orleans and the pivitol character is dead before the movie starts and you never even see so much as a photo. Everything revolves around the life of the dead woman and her name is everywhere but you don't really find out anything about her.
It makes you wonder who that person is sitting under a tree with a 40. Maybe they have a Ph.D. Bobby Long does and he is a drunk, almost a bum and Travolta does a great job. He has his sidekick and there is a complicated relationship. And enter my favorite actress, Scarlett Johansson who is definatly the situation complication and possible saviour for the doomed.
All shot in New Orleans, low budget, great story, direction and cinematography are exellent, the music is intregal. Why didn't I hear about this film in the theater? Rented from Blockbuster strictly because Travolta and Johansson are in it.
Don't get this if you want a fast paced action story. This moves at the slow pace that a hot muggy day in Louisiana requires. The speech is slow, they ride the street car through the Garden District and walk through the French Quarter. They sing slow sad songs and dance in a slow frenzy. This is a movie that I will watch a few more times because so far I have just got a taste of it.
Weathered wood, dank damp walls, old dried out pastels, bright fresh flowers, ancient trees with spanish moss, bright white mansions, old polished wood, worn brick, overgrown lots in the cemetary, lots of beer, smokey bars and lots of music. The language is intelligent, belligerent, drunken, scared and full of love. Slow and rich, something to savour.....damn I am hungry.
