DIY noob question here. The other day over in tubes, Thachear started a thread listing links to tube vendors. Does anybody have a fav vendor for output transformers? Favorite output transformer brands?

Electra-print does excellent work. I've heard terrific amps with Magnequest OPTs. Friend of mine has had wonderful results with Sowter. Dave Slagle is making auto-former OPTs, I think, and that's a cool idea, but I can't recall his website.

Lots of great push-pull xformers to be cannibalized from trashed tube receivers and integrateds, but for SE, for more than a couple of watts, you usually have to pony up.

This guy makes nice OPT's but I'm not sure if he's actually still in business. His webpage seems to be unusable right now. He used to sell trannies on Ebay but I didn't check to see if he still does.handwoundtransformers (http://www.handwoundtransformers.com/)

Magnequest and Electra-print are run by fine guys and are suppliers of fine OPT's at pretty reasonable prices (depending upon construction materials, etc.). The 'entry-level' Hammonds are also excellent for starting out (esp. for SE amps). I think the One Electron OPT's are decent, too, but I have no direct experience.

I really like the Electra-Print iron and have heard it in several 300B circuits, great stuff and Jack Elliano is a good guy to talk to/deal with.

Lately I built a 45 SET using all James iron and am very happy with the results. I've heard the James bits in 45, 2A3, 300B, 50 & 211 SET's and really liked what I heard but you do have to get by the fact that it's made in Taiwan. I'm ok with that, love the finished amps built with this iron and will use it again if I don't use Electra-print. The NA distributor for James is http://www.euphoniaaudio.com/ea/nfoscomm/catalog/ .

im surprised that nobody has mentioned hammond yet.they've been around for a long time and their output transformers and power transformers are resonably priced.they also make and sell chassis and other parts.

Er, since the topic is output transformers... maybe I can mention this giant pair of Altec impedance matching transformers I have on ebay. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5776281588&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1) Anyone want to guess how they were used? Maybe to match paralleled transmitting tubes to a big PA system? At 12.5 lbs each, they don't look like a cheap solution...

If you buy OPT's from handwoundtransformers boy you best have the gear and the means to test and measure them. If not, I wouldn't go there.....I wouldn't go there anyway......spend a little more elsewhere, trust me.

You can source James OPT's in the states I think, If no one has mentioned it...
