If it has the big plastic NAB hubs with it, they're prolly worth the $50 themselves.

I'd be all over it!

Spent $60.00 plus tax... $50.00 for the Teac and 10 CDs at a Buck-A-Pop.

The thing weighs a TON... Almost got a hernia putting it in my car. Has the original owners’ manual and other stuff taped to the unit. The unit looks to have been well taken care off... Asked the lady at the TS to keep an eye out for a box of tapes and reels… One would think that if the main unit was donated, the tapes can’t be far behind…. HOPE!!!

Will post a pic later....

Only thing now is how to explain to the wife where ANOTHER piece of audio equipment came from...

"Don’t know Dear..... Just showed up in the garage"
"Must have been the AUDIO fairy"
"Magic????"
"I promise NEVER to buy another piece of equipment again... So help me Dear"

Will post a pic when it is safe:)

Yeppers.... $50.00 was a bit more than I like to spend at the TS's... But based on the comments back it seemed like a GOOD thing:) to get... Put it on my work bench in the garage last night AFTER the wife went to bed. Now to see how long it takes her to ask "What is this thing????". I will stop in the TS after work and see if they found any reels or tapes... One would think that if the RR was donated, the tapes would go also... HOPE!!!!

That is some score, I have one , I prefer it to an X1000R. You will love it. Very similar to an X10R, I have a Service manual for the X10R if you need it. Very Rare.....the X20R is color schemed like a Tascam, but is TEAC. Good Luck !!! - Joe :thmbsp:  :thmbsp:  :thmbsp:

Hi, my name is Mike, its been a long time since I've been on here! Since then I have obtained an Akai GX-646, off ebay, like brand new, origional box, shipping styrofoam, and plastic bag that came with it in the box,for a grand total of $315! That's including shipping ! Haven't hooked it up yet, but it looks like it was never used! I never could find a high end Teac machine on ebay for less than six or seven hundred dollars! Even X1000 units that were not up to snuff were bringing ungodly high prices! And if they had a dust cover with them, they wouldn't leave very much change from a thousand dollars! Find an X-2000, and the bids were close to fifteen hundred! I don't understand it! A thousand dollars or less could get an Akai 747 dbx from ebay just about any time, and that is top of the line for Akai, except for the super elusive Akai Pro-1000, of which I've never seen one on ebay! I do have a Teac 4010, would have really liked to investagate the higher end Teac machines, but dollar for dollar, I feel the Akai units were the better choice.
For the difference in money saved as compared to a high end Teac, I was able to pick up a dbx 224 noise reduction unit, a dbx 400X router, a Burwen Research 1201 noise reduction unit, an S.A.E. Impulse 5000 noise reduction unit, and a Phase Linear noise reduction unit, and a KLH-7000 A Trasient Noise Eliminator unit. You might say I went a little bit overboard on the noise reduction units, but I'll mix and match, and see what works best, as I attempt to tansfer a thirty five year collection of records to the CD format!
Feel free to coorespond with me if you have similar interests! I'm kind of new to the reel to reel format, but like the idea of the master tape method, and also the log playback times with 10.5" reels, and auto reverse. When these reel to reel units were first available, all my money was going for "raising a family"expenses, and I was do'in good just to have a good high end cassette machine. Now I'm retired, and at 53 years "young", finally got that "reel to reel" that I always had to "pass by" at the audio store! Better late than never I guess! Give me some advice on how to ask questions on this audio forum website! I guess they are called "threads" but I haven't figured out a way to navigate to one to post a question or two! I want to ask some general questions about the Akai 646, but don't know how to get going on this website! If you could help me out, I'd appreciate it! My email address is:
misherri@sbcglobal.net. Get back with me when you can, because even if I were to read a reply from you on this website, I am not sure that I could figure out how to reply to you through this website! I'm lucky to get by as well as I do on this computer, considering I am far from being an expert with the internet as most people are! Get back with me when you can! Mike.

Wait until Des Lab see's this, he'll call you a liar! He doesn't believe you can find deals like this. He says we make these stories up to "one up each other"
