You are not alone big man. . . I have season 1-3 on DVD, about the only thing I can watch more than once. I did not like it at first but once I got in to it and started following the charachters I cant wait for Sunday night. . .
Did you notice Jane digging at her butt during the wedding?? Too Funny. . .
Looks like old Al will be set considering Ty got gutted . . .
GREAT SHOW!!
I've only been able to see a few episodes while over at a friends house. But I agree, it's an awesome show. Funny how the bad language doesn't detract from the Shakespeare like prose. It's definately going to be one to collect on DVD! ;)

I also love Deadwood.. I guess HBO did quite a bit of research before filming to get things right..
Yeah, I can watch them over and over.. Too bad the season is so damn short..

I kinda messed turned the thread by mentioning that I liked Deadwood, and couldnt wait for the Soprano's to start, and I think I mentioned that it was the Sopranos last season. Thats what I heard anyway.

You are right. .. . I was thinking of 24 I guess. I have only season 1. . . I have watched it over and over again. . .
Even started buying books about Wild Bill Hicock to read on the plane while traveling. Seems Wild Bill was pretty burnt by the time he made it to Deadwood, couldnt see very well. . . Glaucoma. . . I doubt he carried his Glaucoma kit but one never knows. . . His references to Clamity Jane were also less than flattering. . . .
I am an official member of the "Deadwood Fan Club" and as such get updates every week. . . Cant wait for season 3 to start.
I think they (HBO) are having a Deadwood marathon starting last night. . . .

I was going to inquire if there were any "Deadwood" fans here on AK, and am glad I clicked search. A highly addictive program...but it's one of those "love it or hate it" situations, I'm sure. I still can't decide who is more evil: Al Swearingen or Cy Tolliver. Both Ian McShane (Al) and Powers Boothe (Cy) grabbed their roles by the horns and ran with them...but I think Boothe takes Cy right over the top and beyond. Robin Weigert (Calamity Jane) evidently also saw the chance to grab a part and make it her own...she's a hoot! I only wish Wild Bill would've been able to stick around a little longer...Carradine OWNED the part. Also must mention Brad Dourif's portrayal of Doc Cochran. Must've been a tough job keeping the whores healthy back in the day. And E>B Farnum is the ultimate toady. I've had the pleasure of meeting John Hawkes (Sol Starr) a couple of times..he's from Alexandria, MN (near where I live) and had the chance to speak to him shortly after he'd been cast for the part. Couldn't tell me much other than he would be in a Western series on HBO, and that he found it interesting and challenging. Advised me to keep an eye out for it, and glad I did. As far as the obscenity? Hardly notice it...in fact, find it rather entertaining. I believe these characters may exceed the talents of a grizzled Marine GySgt in that regard. My wife? She won't admit it...but has come to enjoy the program. She's rather liberal-minded, and, having raised three boys, has somewhat of an "iron ear". Even so, I've heard her emit an "eek" when a particularly vile string of cuss words comes eloquently flowing out of someone's mouth. All-in-all, a fun show and I wouldn't think of missing it. (BTW...Gerald McRaney's arc as that snake Hurst has been fun as well. Good to see his minion "The Captain" get his comeuppance at the hand of Al's guy Dan!!)

...I still can't decide who is more evil: Al Swearingen or Cy Tolliver....It's a close call but I think Al is more evil. Al seems more twisted and has those childhood issues he is trying to work out with the whores. His method seems a lot more 'satisfying' then going to a shrink. The beauty of the show is that you care about Al and even like him and want his plans to succeed. Case in point: Did you even care whether Cy lived or died after he was stabbed? I didn't. But I certainly was relieved when Al passed those kidney stones. BTW, by the end of the show I think we will come to see that holier than thou Bullock is the most twisted. Right now he certainly is conflicted now that he aligned with Al.
One more thing that I like is that even the minor are so fleshed out: I love these character too: Tom Nuttal, the Drunk Steve, Wolcott (died last season), Charlie, Dan, Johnnie, Silas, Elsworth, Miss Isringhuasen, Leon
To spur further discussion here are some predictions:
- The showdown with Hearst is adverted when he is killed by his cook
- Joannie & Jane will have a romantic relationship

The eloquence of their vocabulary enhanced with the most god awful expletives is one of the most fascinating aspects of the show. Everyone talks like they are writing a poem or something. I guess that's how it was way back then...
And I agree it's too bad Wild Bill Hikcock couldn't have lasted a few more shows...John Carradine was awesome...
And like the Sopranos, an awesome tune plays whilst the credits roll!
Cool Show!

Well I guess that is not going to happen as he died a US Senator in 1891. LOL

Poor Doc Cochran...what's he have? TB? Pertussis? Doesn't sound like he's too long for this world. And I'm beginning to wonder about Clamaity Jane's er, um, uhh, sexual orientation.

The Earps, Wyatt and Virgil are comming to town next week. . . .
1877, Spring - Meanwhile Wyatt and Morgan head to Deadwood, Dakota Territory where Wyatt variously makes money hauling wood and riding shotgun.
1877, July 7 - The Dodge City Times reports that Wyatt Earp has returned to town, and hopes that he will rejoin the force.
BTW. .Hearst ran for congress but was never elected AFAIK, , ,
He did buy the 'Homestead' goldmine for 80K then had the biggest in the Black Hills, that his wife took over. . .Dont know what Alma Garret's mine's name is. . .
I think Hearst will stir the pot and leave town. . .most likely. . .I mean Deadwood is still here. . .
What a great show. . .This is the last season. . .The creator said he didn't want to do 2 seasons and would never do 3 unless he had a good enough story to tell and enough money to do it right. . .I certainly want to watch his newer stuff when it comes around. . .

Great show; I get the feeling that they did lots of research before writing. Good writing and good casting go along together, Can't wait for it to start up again!!!They absolutely did. The letter that was written by Bullock and to be published is real and was written for Rev. Henry Winston Smith and not the dead Cornish guy. See this webpage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Weston_Smith)
According to Wikipedia Gearge Hearst was indeed a US Senator. He lost an election to be the Govenor of California though. See George Hearst (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Hearst)
In an interview the writer, of Deadwood said he read the Black Hills Pioneer while he was researching Deadwood.
I never realized that the same actor played Jack McCall and Francis Wolcott. Man, he got two depraved characters.

That may be another letter. . . Could be that Bullock wrote more than one of those letters. . .
I wonder if the preacher in season 1 wasn't based on this preacher?? One that I hated to see go. . .
I am anxious to see how they handle the Earps visit this week. . .
Could be I was thinking about Hearst loosing the Governor race. . . .

Well, Hearst's "load of bricks" has arrived in Deadwood. How will Al and his posse counteract? Wyatt Earp may be of some help, but his bro Morgan? seems like an unreliable hothead to me. Steve the Drunk got his...Doc pretty much kissed him off. I think Calamity Jane kinda liked her Sapphic session...but of course would never admit it...or will she? Countin' the hours til the next episode.

Well...Sunday night it all comes to an end. Is Al really a nice guy underneath it all? You'd think so...given how quickly he came to Charlie Utter's aid and hustled Mrs. Ellsworth to the Gem for safety after someone plinked at her. Even offered her a snort to setle the ol' nerves. Of course, Al also has shown he doen't have to rely on his minions to do what needs to be done: witness him kicking the chicken soup out of Hearst's guy, then calmly slitting his throat and ordering him to be taken down to Wu's for hog food. Then he had to needle Hearst about the guy. Hearst evidently put two and two together, and had Ellsworth whacked. Poor guy. So, the big showdown's Sunday night...or is it? Even though it's listed as the season finale, it's the series finale. HBO has indicated they'd like to do a couple of 2 hour movies to tie up loose ends...let's hope so. Gonna miss the show. But, I can take consolation in the fact that "Rome" is due back. Whole 'nother thread there.

Why wife got me hooked on it. We don't have HBO, but take the disc out for free from the library. You can take out the whole season at once, so we do a marathon for 7 days before they need to be returned. `My wife's friend made us a deal that we could watch HBO on demand while they were away if we could take care of her rabbit. We have two more episodes to watch and i heard they are ending with a mini series. great show.

If you take out the DVD's there are lots of extras. The language is hyped up more than it really was, because today's audience wouldn't find the original obscene words as rough. They had to make it almost every other word to have the desired effect. The DVD's are worth wtching for the extras. We might take them out again, just to get some of what we missed the first time.
